Community and School Factors


Instituto San Antonio del Campestre is a elementary school located in Cartagena,

Colombia. It is placed in El Campestre neighborhood, most of the students belong to a high

social class. The school is a small building and have three floors. It is a new bilingual

school in the city, which has as a goal to be a good bilingual school. The students and

teachers in this school are from Cartagena, Colombia. There are around one hundred and

fifty students in the school, there are about fifteen students in each classroom, also that is a

small school, it has about eleven classrooms, one library, information sale, a principal

office, four bathrooms, a teacher sale and so on, but the school do not own an English sale

or something like that. Also, Although, in the library there are some element that can help

to teach the topics for example, flash cards, books, cd with infantile songs and realia things,

capaces de desarrollarse personalmente e integralmente siendo un aporte a la sociedad

obteniendo igualmente un segundo idioma.

On the other hand, the school offer to the students per week 2 hours devoted to English,

and the subject is teached at the begining of the class, it means that students usually have

English class at 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. My Home school has like guide the Common Core

of Ministerio de Educación Nacional, in order to design objectives and another standard to

carry out the syllabus and topic established in that school for example, kids identify the

greetings or body parts, in order to catch up the goals. Also, children use a small book that

contain the units and topics that kids should know for example, greetings, body, numbers,

colors, say my name is and so on. Bisede, the current level that they have is B1 but the want

to get B2.

Classroom factors

Centro de Educacion el recreo is a school that like to get alot of new ideas to improve the

teaching and learning process. But The learning environment is very small and students are

seated in a circle and when the teacher want to work with the students in groups i is

difficult and the teacher have to take them toward the yard or swith the classrooms.. Its

classroom is positive, colorfull and relaxing and students are active at the moment of asking

questions, the classroom with high quality technology that the teacher uses for the

development of classes, although most of the time in the class is used to interect among
students and the teacher so, the teacher usually does dinamic activities, plays videos, play

games and so on.

Students Characteristics

In the second grade students are between seven and eigth years old, in this classroom are

16 students, 7girls and 9 boys, most of the students are from the same culture and belong

to a higth social class, however there is one that is from San Vacilio de Palenque.

Teacher Characteristics

The teacher is a young woman that is stuying education yet, in Unicolombo university. Her

proficiency level is between B1and B2. She is funny and active in classes, students love

her. She has been working in this school for 2 year, she worked in a kindergarten for 1 year

before.

Reflection of the learning.

Firts, at the time when the teacher is assessing the students have some probles due to, the

clssroom is very small and when the teacher does an activity in groups is very difficult and

it influence in the learning because they need to interac between them and improve their

skills togehther. Also, tthe time that is used in the class is not enougth to develop alot of

activities in order to carry out a excellent assessegment so, it can have a impact in the

pupils because maybe all the topics would not be able to carry out during the academic

year. However, the strategies used by the English teacher in the classroom have a great

impact on the learning of the children, as the teacher helps the students to understand

concepts explained in the class. For example, watching a movie in another language in this
case English the teacher does everything is possible so that students can understand the

video.

Class observation:

A.Cronological order of the events in the class:

 At the begining of the class, the teacher was going to identify how much

students know about animals asking some questions and studenst had to

answer them.

 Then, teacher played with the students, so the game consisted in pass a ball

while the teacher was saying tic-tac and when the teacher stoped, he showed

a flasd card of a farm animal and asked questions where the student had to

identify the animal and answer the question in order to realize the pupils’

knowledge about the topic.

 In the presentation, the teacher put a video relate to te farm animals and the

studenst had to listening it and showed some flasd card too.

 After that, studensts had to work in groups to practice and teacher was

walking around them in order to identify if the students understood the topic.

 Finally, in this part the teacher assess the students give them some papers

where the studests had to work in pair in order to be evaluate ina a formal-

summative way. So, they had to listen and identify the animal that they

heard and putting a circle, it had a 2.5 point. Then, they had to speak about a

farm animal in front of the class that teacher explained, it was point 2.5 in
order to obtain 5 point. Then, the teacher gave to the students so.e feedback

trough a game and orally too, where he said to them, the correct

pronuntiation about words that the pronounced bad and what the have to

improve and so on.

B. The class was focus in the farm animals where there were a content and a language

objectives

That would help to develop the class according to the goals. They were:

 To identify the farms animals

 Listen to and represent orally what are the farm animals.

Beside, they were stated at the begining of the class in order to have a clear idea about

what is going to develop in the class which there was a lot of interaction between students

and the teacher, but related to the talking time there was not a long period only the

necessary.

On the other Hand, teacher always engaged to the students equally in order to get more

motivation from them and that students do more than they can do. At the end of the class

the teacher gave to studesnts some feedback which was good because, tecaher said to them

it in a dinamic and orally way in order to improve the students’ skills and so on.

Also, the class was evaluated in a formal-summative way because there were some task that

the teacher assessed in that way. To finish, the most of the activities were aligned with the

learning objectives due to in the class were activities where the students had to identify,
listening and presentations about the topic, so it was very relevant because that are the goals

that must to carry out in order to get a great class.

3. Design of an assessment plan to monitor student progress toward learning

objective(s). Two assessments, formal and informal must be included to monitor

or measure one of the four skills progress (writing, speaking, reading or listening).

This evaluation activity is projected for second grade students and aims that students be

able to identy and listen on and presente orally the types of animals. The activities will take

about 20 minutes each one. To carry out the activity we need a a lot of flash card, some

photocopies of animals to color, a computer or TV, sound and a color pencils.. One of the

activity is called "saying the animals that I know" and the another one is “listening, identy

and color where will be evaluate the speaking and listening skills. This evaluation is

summative and formal because the activities will be point.

In the first activity, the teacher in going to ask to each student speak about an animal that

the teacher will give them according to the type of animal, so pupils have to present in front

of the class and show through a flash card the animal that he or she is talking about.

In the second activity, the teacher is going to give students some papers about the animals

whre they have to listen one animal played in the computer or TV and they have to color

the correct one that they heard.

Scoring and feedback


Each activity would be point with 5.0 points in order to obtain among them a score of 10

point to analizy if the students’ pesrforment meet of the learning objective were carried out.

In the feedback, teacher during the assessment is going to identify if students pronounce

something bad or if they get the topic and vocabulary. Finally teacher is going to tell them

in order to improve the students’ skills,
