Violation of traffic rules

causes
Examples of moving violations

 speeding which can be exceeding a limit or -in some jurisdictions- simply driving
an unsafe speed

 failing to maintain an Assured Clear distance ahead (ACDA)

 running a stop sign or red light
 failure to yield to another vehicle with the right-of-way
 failure to signal for turns or lane changes
 failing to drive within a single lane
 crossing over a center divider, median or gore
 driving on the shoulder where it is considered illegal under certain conditions
 failure to use a seat belt
 illegal use of window tints and obstructions
 failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk
 failure to stop for a school bus when children are boarding or exiting (in certain jurisdictions)
 failure to secure a load to a truck or lorry
 driving in a car pool lane illegally
 operating a telecommunications device while driving
 driving a vehicle outside the conditions of one's license
 driving without a license or with a suspended license or with a license from another country
 driving a vehicle in a bus lane or tracks
More serious moving violations include:

 driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol, etc

 reckless driving
 street racing

effect on people

 Traffic congestion has a number of negative effects:

 It also leads to many accidents which lead to loss of life
 Wasting time of motorists and passengers ("opportunity cost"). As a non-productive activity
for most people, congestion reduces regional economic health.
 Delays, which may result in late arrival for employment, meetings, and education, resulting in
lost business, disciplinary action or other personal losses.
 Inability to forecast travel time accurately, leading to drivers allocating more time to travel
"just in case", and less time on productive activities.
 Wasted fuel increasing air pollution and carbon dioxide emissions owing to increased idling,
acceleration and braking.
 Wear and tear on vehicles as a result of idling in traffic and frequent acceleration and
braking, leading to more frequent repairs and replacements.
 Stressed and frustrated motorists, encouraging road rage and reduced health of motorists
 Emergencies: blocked traffic may interfere with the passage of emergency vehicles traveling
to their destinations where they are urgently needed.
 Spillover effect from congested main arteries to secondary roads and side streets as
alternative routes are attempted ('rat running'), which may affect
neighborhood amenity and real estate prices.
 Higher chance of collisions due to tight spacing and constant stopping-and-going.

Solutions

1. Strict Rules

Various amendments have been made to The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in order to improve
the on-road safety of commuters. Obtaining documents like learning and driving license have
been automated. Emphasis has been put on buying insurance for a vehicle. If a person fails to
abide by these rules, he/she has to face heavy fines and/or imprisonment.

2.Heavy Fines

In order to reduce violations of traffic rules, the officials are now imposing heavy fines on the
violators. As compared to the past, violators now have to pay more than double the fine amount
for an offense. Some cases like repeated drunk driving can attract strict penalties like
confiscation of driving license, fine of Rs. 10000 and 3 years of imprisonment.

3. Use of Speed Detection Devices

As said earlier, over speeding is one of the major reasons for road accidents in India. Vehicles
colliding with other vehicles or objects proves to be fatal for the driver as well as passengers.
To reduce this possibility, police officers have started using speed detection devices in some
Indian states.

The device accurately measures the speed at which a vehicle is traveling. If the speed is over
and above the prescribed limit, the driver is booked for over speeding. According to the new
traffic rules, one has to pay a fine ranging from Rs. 1000 to 2000 depending on the type of
vehicle for over speeding.

4. Safety Measures

This is the basic thing a person can do to reduce the chances of a road accident. Wearing seat
belts in a car or a helmet while commuting on a bike can prove to be life-saving. Officials have
taken to social media to educate people about important safety measures to be taken while
using a vehicle. As an impact, many commuters have started taking small steps towards
following rules and taking safety measures.
