1. A 1000 kVA, 6.6 kV, 3-phase star connected alternator has a synchronous reactance of 25
Ω per phase. It supplies full load current at 0.8 lagging power factor and a rated termi-
nal voltage. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation when the alternator
supplies full load current at 0.8 leading power factor. (Ans: 11.15 kV)

2. A 2500 V, 3-phase, star connected motor has a synchronous reactance of 5 Ω per phase.
The motor input is 1000 kW at rated voltage and an excitation emf of 3600 V(line).
Calculate the line current and power factor. (Ans: 237.8 A, 0.97 leading)

3. A 20 MVA, 11 kV, 3-phase delta connected synchronous motor has a synchronous reac-
tance 15 Ω/phase. Windage , friction and iron losses amount to be 1200 kW.

(a) Find the value of the unity power factor current drawn by the motor at a shaft load
of 15 MW. What is the excitation emf under this condition? (Ans: 850 A, 13.23
kV)
(b) If the excitation emf is adjusted to 15.5 kV (Line) and the shaft load is adjusted
so that motor draws unity power facto current, find the motor output (net). (Ans:
22.8 MW)

4. A 600 V, 6-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz, star connected synchronous motor has a resistance and
synchronous reactance of 0.4 Ω and 7 Ω respectively. It takes a current of 15 A at upf
when operating with a certain field current. With the field current remaining constant, the
load torque is increased until the motor draws a current of 50 A. Find the torque(gross)
developed and the new power factor. (Ans: 420.2 N m, 0.9 lagging )

5. A 3-phase, 5 kVA, 415 V, four pole star connected synchronous machine has a synchronous
reactance of Xs = 1.5Ω per phase. The machine is connected to a 3-phase, 415 V infinite
bus. Neglect rotational loss and armature resistance.

(a) The field current and mechanical input power are adjusted so that the synchronous
machine delivers 2 kW at 0.8 lagging power factor. Determine the excitation voltage
(E) and the power angle (δ). (Ans: 420 V (Line), 0.98◦ )
(b) The mechanical input power is kept constant, but the field current is adjusted to
make the power factor unity. Determine the excitation emf (E) and the power angle
(δ).(Ans: 415 V (Line), 0.99◦ )

6. Two identical 3-phase, star connected, synchronous generators are connected in parallel
to equally share a load of 900 kW at 11 kV and 0.8 pf lagging. The synchronous reactance
of each generator is 10 Ω. per phase. The field current of one generator is adjusted so
that its armature current is 25 A at a lagging power factor. Determine

(a) the armature current of the other generator (Ans: 35,83 A)

(b) the power factor of the each generator (Ans: 0.94 lagging, 0.66 lagging)
(c) the per phase induced emf of each generator (Ans: 6440.44 V, 6623.78 V)
(d) the power angle of each generator. (Ans: 2.09◦ ,2.05◦ )
