Abstract

This experiment is to investigate the heat transfer

processes occurring in Thermal Insulation and
Thermal Radiation. The removal of heat from the
surface of a body can be accomplished by conduction,
convection and radiation.
Introduction

A. Thermal Insulation
● Is the reduction of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact
or in range of radiative influence.
● It can be achieved with specially engineered methods or processes,
as well as with suitable object shapes and materials.
Rationale of the Experiment
This experiment is conducted to compare and test the cooling rate of
the boiling water in a complete calorimeter which is properly covered and
the inner vessel without lid.

Significance of the Experiment

The significance of thermal insulation is to comprehend how
insulation works and it is used to minimize or prevent the transmission of
sound and heat from one surface in the structure to the other side.
Methodology
Complete Calorimeter

1. Gather all the materials needed for

the experiment.

2. Pour an appropriate amount of

boiled water into the calorimeter.

3. Make sure the thermometer is

inserted and is properly covered.
Methodology
Inner Vessel Without lid

1. Take out the inner vessel from the

outer vessel of the calorimeter and
rinse it until the temperature is
back at room temperature and
wipe it or dry.

2. Pour approximately the same

amount of water into the
calorimeter without lid.
Conclusion
Based on the recorded set of data, the temperature in a complete
calorimeter decreased slowly compared to the inner vessel without lid.

Recommendations
● Make sure the apparatus is well insulated so that only a very little
amount of energy escapes to the surroundings.
● The experiment should be protected from any other surrounding
disturbance.
Introduction

B. Thermal Radiation
● Radiation is a method of heat transfer that does not rely upon any
contact between the heat source and the heated object.
● The appearance of a surface determines its rates of emission and
absorption of radiation.
Rationale of the Experiment
This experiment is performed in order to measure and compare the
heat absorption rate of the white coated test and the black coated test.

Significance of the Experiment

The importance of this is experiment is to observe and understand
how thermal radiation works. Thus, to be able to distinguish which
coated surface is a much better absorber of heat radiation.
Methodology
Conclusion
The black coated surface absorbed heat radiation better since it
emits and absorb radiation more efficiently, while, the aluminum coated
reflects light.

Recommendations
● Position the light bulb in the center between tubes precisely.
● Properly keep track of the temperature in each test after every
interval.
