Discussion 1 – Who’s better?

In your own perspective, whose philosophy captures better your own idea of self?
In my own perspective the philosopher who can perfectly characterize my
own idea of self is Gilbert Ryle. For him, the self is the way people behave. This idea
explains that it is a pattern of behaviour on how people will show to others on what kind
of person they are and how a person will behave in a certain situation they have. It
includes the concept of mind and body. These two are connected to each other. The
mind will tell you the certain things you need to do, while your body is responsible for
the actions that you will show on the crowd. In reality, behaviour of a person depends
on how they think of their minds. Some people think first before they act because they
do not want to be disappointed of their self or to disappoint the people around.
Moreover, Ryle perceives the mind as the totality of human dispositions that is known
through the way people behave. Also, he includes that the mind expresses the system
of thoughts, emotions and action that makes up the human self. The Concept of human
self of Ryle gives a philosophical principle, “I act therefore I am.”

Learning Outcomes: Sociology

1. Describe the self in terms of interests, dreams, aspirations, educational path,
daily activities, and decisions and identify social events that have influenced and
shape these.

I used to think of myself as someone who is reserved. It is a bit difficult for

me to start a conversation with a potential friend, and to interact with a large
crowd is one of my biggest fears. However, I was able to eventually overcome
this reserve personality when I realized that my dream of becoming a registered
pharmacist needs communication.

During my Senior High School Years, I became more active in terms of my

interest. Since I wanted to pursue Pharmacy, I chose STEM as my strand to be
more versed and knowledgeable in the field of Science. Also, I trained myself to
be more vocal and interactive with my classmates. Probably, one of the peak
activities that I have engaged in was during our pharmaceutical immersion. I
worked as an intern for the South Star Drugs. In the course of my internship, I
have learned the technicalities and environment of being a Pharmacist.
Moreover, it trained me to become a good communicator. Apart from these,
social events such as career talk had further encouraged me to pursue
Pharmacy. Given these influences, my once reserved self had become
determined to pursue this chosen profession.
2. Illustrate how ones interests education and work decisions, and daily activities
shape institutions and society.

Our interests, education, decisions and daily activities can be greatly

shared in our society and institutions. As a share in our society, I will use what I
have learned in our immersion such as to effectively communicate with other
people. I can do it by explaining to them the effects and functions of the medicine
they bought. We can be a good speaker and the people who are listening, can be
a good listener. They will gain ideas and lesson in all the pharmaceutical
technicalities that will be shared and they can apply it on themselves. By doing
so, we can help other people realize the importance of being knowledgeable in
this health field.
