HIV/AIDS Community Planning Major Rally


and Civil Disobedience; Call For Dignity and
Housing By Passing 30% Rent Cap
Advocates Will Urge Governor Paterson To Work With Legislature To
Enact Legislation During Special Session Before He Leaves Office
WHEN: Tuesday, November 9th from 11:30am – 12:30pm

WHERE: Rally on Broadway between Barclay and Park (next to City Hall Park). Civil disobedience
will involve twenty advocates laying down and blocking Broadway at Park.

WHAT: Rally by a coalition of elected officials and HIV/AIDS, housing and community
organizations, followed by a civil disobedience on Broadway led by Executive Directors and staff
from ten leading service organizations and people living with HIV/AIDS.

WHO:
! Civil disobedience: Directors and senior staff from these organizations will be arrested –
Bailey House, Bronx AIDS Services, CitiWide Harm Reduction, Community Health Action of
Staten Island (CHASI), Harlem United, Health GAP, Housing Works, NYC
AIDS Housing Network (NYCAHN) & VOCAL, New York Harm Reduction Educators, West
Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing
! Elected officials speaking during rally: Senators Tom Duane and Liz Krueger, Assembly
Members Deborah Glick and Richard Gottfried, Council Member Robert Jackson and
Jummane Williams.

WHY: Governor Paterson rejected a bill that would prevent 10,000 low-income New Yorkers living
with HIV/AIDS and their families from becoming homeless that he called his “most difficult veto,”
although he has since expressed a desire to work with the legislature to enact it before he leaves
office.
