CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background

In this increasingly advanced era of globalization we must have skill in English for
business. In addition, with the existence of vocabulary we will be easier in doing business.
Doing business not only domestically but also abroad, therefore we have to master a lot of
vocabulary so that we are easier to do business or communicate in English. Many business
activities are carried out by business actors or economic actors in order to fulfill their daily
needs and develop their business or business activities.

Human business is coupled with technological sophistication and must master English
because business is not only in the country. business is increasingly popular and can be done
by anyone only with ideas, business and capital and sufficient understanding in the business
activities that it will do. Problems in a business must exist, but we must be able to find
solutions or solve problems from that problem so that our efforts can be sustainable.

CHAPTER II
RESEARCH LITERATURE

As the knowledge of English becomes more and more vital, English teachers are
faced with increasing challenges in their teching experiences. While the focus was placed on
grammatical description in the past, nowadays students require the use of modern methods
promoting real communication in the classrom that should helpthem understand the language
they are learning and participate in conversations.

There are many ways to teach vocabulary that have been used and discussed over
time. For example, videos are widely used as instructional material because it has been
noticed that students acquire new vocabulary and reinforce initially learned vocabulary when
they watch movie scenes. The importance of learning vocabulary has been very well
expressed by the British linguist Wilkins. He (1972; 111) states that “Without grammar very
little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. In the introduction to
their Cambridge English Course 1, Swan and Walter emphasise this idea by saying that
“Vocabulary acquisition is the largest and most important task facing the language learner”.
(1984: vii).

Based on the research that has been done by Ameena Zafar (2016), he researched skill
of undergraduate students and used a tool to improve their skill in English vocabulary.
Focusing in the remedial measures, after conducting an Academic English Language for six
months, dedicating ten full sessions for grammar teaching , and evaluating the final work of
the ESL students enrolled in MBA, it was evident that the students needed more intensive as
well as extensive practice in verb forms. The most frequent errors were seen firstly, in past
tense usage and secondly, in present tense usage in narratives and corporate compositions.
Beside the past perfect aspect, which occured scantly in the thirty-five written compositions,
the errors in the rest of the aspects occured in such a small number that perhaps they might
not require the main focus of the ESL remedial teachers. Consequently it may be suggested
that more grammar exercises could be incorporated into the language training and may
require a more intensive and extensive drilling. Additional vocabulary and language structure
improvement efforts can show even more improvement in meaning and content than as seen
before. Frequent practice of similar narrative sentences might help the student to drop such
extra verbs from the sentences. That is why we considered it was important to help the
students finding the best way they like to vocabulary in English Business.

The table above shows that out of 600 words available, there are only 453
vocabularies words that can be filled by students. From several vocabulary answers, there are
341 vocabulary words answered correctly. Furthermore, the table above shows that there are
112 vocabularies answers incorrectly. But, there are still many words that are left passed.
This might happen because there are still some students who lack vocabulary in Business

students.
