2ीगणेशाय नमः । 1. I bow down to Shri GANESH.


Oh, MAYURESHWARA, you are the one on whom
हे सवाKधारा मयरू े Nवरा we depend,
Oh, Son of GAURI, the all-knowing,
सवKसाOी गौरBकुमारा ॥ Oh, You inconceivable one,
You with an immeasurable belly,
हे अUचंWया लंबोदरा ।
Protect me, oh, Shri GANAPATI
पा]ह मां 2ीगणपते ॥ १ ॥
तूं सकल गणांचा आ]द ईश । 2. You are the first and foremost of all Ganas
and of all the deities;
`हणूaन `हणती गणेश ॥ Therefore, you are called “GANESH”
You are acknowledged by all the “SHASTRAS”
तंू संमत सवK शा;bांस । [sacred books]; You of sacred countenance, oh,
BHALACHANDRA!
मंगलcपा भालचंeा ॥ २ ॥

हे शारदे वािhवलाiसनी । 3. Oh, SHARADA, Goddess of Speech!


You are the mistress of the realm of words;
तंू शjद सlृ टBची ;वाiमनी ॥ Because of your existence,
All worldly transactions are carried on.
तुझे अि;तWव `हणूनी ।
oयवहार चालती जगताचे ॥ ३ ॥
तूं qंथकाराची दे वता । 4. You are the deity revered by all authors;
You are eternally the pride of this nation;
तूं भूषण दे शाचs सवKथा ॥ Your infinite power prevails everywhere.
I bow to you, JGADAMBE.

ु सी जगदं बे ॥ ४ ॥
पूणKwxमा संतyzया । 5. You are the Supreme Spirit and beloved of the
saints! Incarnation in human form of
हे सगुणcपा पंढरBराया ॥ PANDHARIRAYA
You are the ocean of kindness and infinite
कृपाणKवा परम सदया । compassion;
Oh Panduranga Narahari!
पांडुरं गा नरहरे ॥ ५ ॥

तूं अवtयांचा सूbधार । 6. You, who control the world like a puppeteer with
his strings,
तुझी oया~ती जगभर ॥ You are omnipresent;
All the sciences and sacred books are still delving
अवधीं शा;bs yवचार । To plumb the essence of your nature.

ु या ;वcपाचा ॥ ६ ॥
प;
ु तक‚ानी जे जे कोणी । 7. Those who are pedagogues,
To them, you are not revealed, oh CHAKRAPANI;
Wयां तूं न गवससी चƒपाणी ॥ All those foolish people
Wया अवtया मूखाKनीं । Only indulge in the jugglery of words.

शjदवाद करावा ॥ ७ ॥
तुला जाणती एक संत । 8. Only the saints understand you
Others remain baffled.
बाक‡चे होती कंु ]ठत ॥ To you, my obeisance,
Respectful and with my whole body
तल
ु ा माझा दं डवत । prostrate in veneration before you.
आदरs हा अlटांगी ॥ ८ ॥
हे पंचवŠbा शंकरा । 9. Oh, You, five - headed SHANKRA,
Oh, You, wearer of garland of skulls,
हे नरcंडमालाधरा ॥ Oh, You, blue - throated DIGAMBARA
Oh, You, BRAHMARUPA PASHUPATI!
हे नीलकंठा ]दगंबरा ।

ु ते ॥ ९ ॥
तुझs नाम •याचे ओठ•ं । 10. One who recites your name all the time,
His worldly adversities are immediately dissolved
Wयाचs दै ‘य जाय उठाउठ•ं ॥ Such is, our DHURJATI – the Lord Shiva,
The power of your name.
ऐसा आहे धूजKटB ।
म]हमा तु€या नावाचा ॥ १० ॥
तु€या चरणां वंदन
ू । 11. With obeisance at your feet,
I am writing this paean of praise;
मी हs ;तोb क•रत• लेखन ॥ Help me always to complete this mission,
Oh, you, NILAKNTHA - the blue - throated one!
यास करावs साxय पूणK ।
तूं सवKदा नीलकंठा ॥ ११ ॥
आतां वंदं ु अ–bसुता । 12. Now, let me bow to the son of Arti
[DATTATREYA],
इं]दराकुलदे वता ॥ To the family deity of Indira (VISHNU)
To Tukaram and all other saints;

ु ारामा]द सकल संतां । So, also, to all the devotees.
तेवीं अवtया भाyवकांसी ॥ १२ ॥

जय जयाजी साईनाथा । 13. Hail, Hail to you, Sainath,


Redeemer of sinners and merciful one!
पaततपावना कृपावंता ॥ I lay my head down at your feet;
Now give me your protection.
तु€या पदBं ठे yवत• माथा ।
आतां अभय असूं दे ॥ १३ ॥
तंू पण
ू Kwxमा सौ˜यधामा। 14. You are the whole world, the abode of bliss;
You, yourself, are Vishnu, the paragon among
तूंUच yवlणु नरोuमा ॥ men;
One whose wife is Uma!
अधा™गी ती •याची उमा । You are also that enemy of Cupid.
तो कामारB तूंच क‡ ॥ १४ ॥
तूं नरदे हधारB परमेNवर। 15. You are God in human form!
You are the sun in the sky of knowledge!
तंू ‚ाननभींचा ]दनकर ॥ You are the ocean of kindness!
You are the anti-dote for worldly maladies!
तंू दयेचा सागर ।
भवरोगा औषधी तूं ॥ १५ ॥
तूं हBनदBना Uचंतामणी। 16. You are the CHINTAMANI of the poor and the
down-trodden!
तूं तव भŠतां ;वधुKनी ॥ You are the divine purifier (Ganges river) for your
devotees!
तूं बुडaतयांना भoय तरणी । You are the raft for those drowning in
worldliness!
तंू भीतासी आ2य ॥ १६ ॥
You are the refuge of the timid.

जगाचs आ›य कारण । 17. You are the very cause of this creation!
That which is pure CHAITANYA!
जs कां yवमलचैत‘य ॥ You are that Oh, very treasure of compassion;
The universe is only one of your LEELAS.
तs तु`हBच आहा दयाघन ।
yवNव हा yवलास तम
ु चाUच ॥ १७ ॥
आपण ज‘मर]हत । 18. You are not born!
Death also does not affect you!
मWृ युहB ना आपणांzत ॥ This is the final conclusion
Which one arrives at, after thoughtful search.
तsच अखेर कळून येत ।
पूणK yवचारs शोUधतां ॥ १८ ॥
ज‘म आžण मरण । 19. Birth and death,
These concepts are born of ignorance!
हBं दो‘हBं अ‚ानज‘य ॥ From both you are free
Oh, Lord, of course!
दोह•पासन
ू अiल~त आपण ।
मूळींच महराजा ॥ १९ ॥
पाणी झयांत zगटलs । 20. If water appears as a spring,
Does it imply that its source is there?
`हणून कां तेथ उपळलs ॥ It existed already, full and flush,
Merely sprang up from within the earth.
ते पूवŸच होतs पूणK भरलs ।
आले माb आंतन
ु ी ॥ २० ॥
खोचs त आलs जीवन । 21. Water that springs up in a hollow
Is, therefore, so described or named;
`हणूaन लाधलs अiभधान ॥ A "spring" becomes its proper name.
Without the water, it is only a hollow.
झरा ऐसs aतजलागून ।
जलाभावीं खांचUच ॥ २१ ॥
लागला आžण आटला । 22. To spring up and to dry up and disappear,
This is not the nature of water;
हs मळ
ु ीं ठावs न जला ॥ Because the water of the spring
Has no importance for the hollow it fills.
कां क‡ं जल खांचेला ।
दे त नoहतs महWव मुळीं ॥ २२ ॥
खांचेसी माb अiभमान । 23. It is only the hollow that is mistakenly proud
Of itself, rather than the water that filled it.
जीवनाचा प•रपूणK ॥ Therefore, when the water dries up
The hollow becomes impoverished.
`हणून तs आटतां दा ण ।
दै ‘याव;था ये aतसी ॥ २३ ॥
नरदे ह हB खांच खरB । 24. The human body is really like the hollow water
bed;
शु›ध चैत‘य yवमल वारB ॥ The spirit (pure energy) is like the pure clean
water of the spring;
खांचा अनंत होती जरB । Although there are innumerable such hollows
The essence is the same in everyone.
तरB न पालट तोयाचा ॥ २४ ॥

`हणून अज‘मा आपणां । 25. Until now, who are without a beginning,
I say to you, merciful one,
मी `हणतसे दयाघना ॥ To destroy the mountain of ignorance
Please become the thunderbolt of Indra!
अ‚ान नगा¡या कंदना ।
कर¢या oहावs व£ त`
ु हB ॥ २५ ॥
ऐशा खांचा आजवर । 26. Until now, such hollow (beings)
Have existed in large numbers, on this earth.
बहुत झा¤या भूमीवर ॥ Many more exist even now,
And, in the future, as time goes by, many more
ह¤लB अजून होणार । will come.
पुढेहB कालाव;थेनs ॥ २६ ॥
Wया zWयेक खांचेzत । 27. Each such hollow (being)
Is given a separate and different name and
aनराळs नांवcप iमळत ॥ appearance;
That is how, in this world,
जेणsकcन जगतात । They are identified.
ओळख Wयांची पटतसे ॥ २७ ॥
आतां चैत‘याzत । 28. Therefore, to distinguish that spirit
In terms of “you and me” is not proper;
मी - तूं `हणुणs ना उUचत ॥ Because, as there is no duality
That itself is most surely, the Spirit
कां क‡ं जेथs न संभवतs ›वैत ।
तsUच चैत‘य aनNचयs ॥ २८ ॥
आžण oया~ती चैत‘याची । 29. And, since the Spirit
Truly encompasses the whole world,
अवtया जगाठायीं साची ॥ Then, the "you and me" the duality concept,
How can it possibly be entertained?
मग iम-तंू या भावनेची ।
संगत कैशी लागते? ॥ २९ ॥
जल मेघगभŸचs । 30. Water latent in the clouds
Is all the same;
एकपणs एक साचs ॥ But when it descends upon the earth,
It assumes different forms.
अवतरणे भूवरB होतां Wयाचे ।
भेद होती अनेक ॥ ३० ॥
जs गोदे ¡या पाbांत । 31. That which falls in the Godavari bed
Is known as the (sacred) River Godavari;
तs गोदा `हणून वा]हले जात ॥ That which falls into a well
Does not have the same worthiness or prestige.
जs पडे कूपांत ।
तैसी न Wयाची योhयता ॥ ३१ ॥
संतcप गोदावरB । 32. Saints are the river Godavari,
And, you are the water in it
तेथील त`
ु हB आहां वारB ॥ We are the puddles, wells and lakes;
That is the difference between us.
आ`हB Uथ¤लर कूप सरोवरB ।
`हणूaन भेद तु`हां आ`हां ॥ ३२ ॥
आ`हां oहावया कृताथK । 33. For the fulfilments of our lives
We must surrender to you,
आलs पा]हजे तु`हांzत ॥ Always, with folded hands,
Because you are the embodiment of piety.
शरण सवKदा जोडून हात ।
का क‡ं पyवbता त`
ु हांठाई ॥ ३३ ॥
पाbामुळs पyवbता । 34. It is due to its water - bed
That the waters of Godavari have become holy;
आलB गोदा-जलासी सवKथा ॥ Considered merely as water,
It’s the same everywhere.
नुसWया जलांत पाहतां ।
तs एकपणे एकUच ॥ ३४॥
पाb गोदावरBचs । 35. The bed of Godavari
That is considered as truly sacred,
जs कां ठरलs पyवb साचs ॥ Owes all its sanctity
To the quality of the land through which it flows
तs ठर¢यांत भूमीचे ।
गुणदोष झाले साxय पहा ॥ ३५ ॥
मेघगभŸ¡या उदकाला । 36. The water latent in the clouds
Does not alter that part of the earth on which it
जो भiू मभाग न बदलवी भला । falls;
Yet, that very part of the earth,
Wयाच भम
ू ी¡या भागाला । Is called Godavari (or pure) by the scholars
of the sacred books.
गोदा `हणाले शा;bवेuे ॥ ३६ ॥

इतरb जs जल पडलs । 37. Where the water has fallen elsewhere,


It has acquired the qualities of the soil on those
Wयाने पदगुणा ;वीकारलs ॥ places;
Contaminated, bitter, salty it becomes
रोगी कडू खारट झालs । Though originally sweet.
मुळचs गोड असूनी ॥ ३७ ॥

तैसs गुcवरा आहे येथ । 38. Same is the case with you, oh, GURURAYA,
In whom there is no impurity of the six vices,
ष¦§पूंची न घाण जेथ ॥ To that holy form
This title, “Saint” is befitting.
Wया पyवb yपंडाzथ ।
संत अiभधान शोभतसे ॥ ३८ ॥
`हणून संत ती गोदावरB । 39. Therefore saints are Godavari
So full of grace;
मी `हणत• सािजवरB ॥ Amongst all the beings
Your place is the highest!
अवtया जीवांत आहे खरB
आपल
ु B 2ेlठ योhयता ॥ ३९ ॥
जगदारं भापासन
ू । 40. From the beginning of creation
Godavari has been in existence;
गोदा आहे च aनमाKण ॥ It has been full of water
And it has never lacked it till today.
तोयहB भरलs प•रपूणK ।
तुटB न झालB आजवरB ॥ ४० ॥
पहा जेoहां रावणारB । 41. Look, the enemy of RAVAN
Came to the banks of the Godavari
येता झाला गोदातीरB ॥ But it’s water has flowed
And the water at present is not the same as old
Wया वेळचs तेथील वारB । water.
]टके कोठून आजवरB ॥ ४१ ॥
पाb माb तsच उरलs । 42. The bed alone remains the same,
The water have flowed into the ocean,
जल सागरा iमळालs ॥ The sanctity is eternal
Of the river - bed, to this day.
पाyव¨य कायम रा]हलs ॥
जल-पाbांचs आजवरB ॥ ४२ ॥
zWयेक संवWसरB । 43. Each year,
The old waters go and the new
जन
ु s जाऊaन नवs वारB ॥ Flow into the river bed;
It’s the law, as you know.
येत पाbाभीतरBं ।
तोच ‘याय तु`हां ठाया ॥ ४३ ॥
शतक तsच संवWसर । 44. A century is like a year.
The sages of that century
Wया शतकांतील साधुवर ॥ Are like the flowing waters
While the great souls are like the waves on the
हs च जल साचार । water.
नाना yवभत
ू ी xया लाटा ॥ ४४ ॥

या संतcप गोदेसी । 45. Of these saints who are like Godavari,


In the early centuries,
zथम संवWसरासी ॥ There was a great flood
Of SANAT - SANAK - SANANDAN.
पूर आला aनNचयsसीं ।
सनWसनक-सनंदनाचा ॥ ४५ ॥
मागून नारद तंबुर । 46. Followed by NARADA and TUMBER
DHURVA, PRAHLAD, powerful king BALI,
धव
ृ z¤हाद बiल नप
ृ वर ॥ SHABARI, ANGAD, VAYUKUMAR,
VIDUR, GOPE - GOPIKA.
शबरB अंगद वायुकुमर ।
yवदरू गोपगोyपका ॥ ४६ ॥
ऐसे बहुत आजवरB । 47. Thus, many came the present time
In each of the centuries of the past;
zWयेक शतकामाझारBं ॥ The floods came repeatedly,
Which I am unable to recount.
परू आले वर¡यावरB ।
तs वणK¢या अशŠय मी ॥ ४७ ॥
या सांzत¡या शतकांत । 48. In this present century,
The sacred Godavari
संतcप गोदे zत ॥ Has for certain flooded this land
आपण पूर आलांत । In your form, Oh, Sainath!

साईनाथा aनNचयs ॥ ४८ ॥

ु ¡या ]दoय चरणां । 49. Therefore at your divine feet
I make obeisance;
मी क•रत• वंदना ॥ Maharaj, of my faults
Take no notice, I plead.
महाराज मा€या दग
ु ुKणा ।
पाहूं नका ªकमपीहB ॥ ४९ ॥
मी हBन दBन अ‚ानी । 50. I am a poor, wretched, ignorant man,
The greatest of sinners;
पातŠयांचा iशखामणी ॥ Ridden with vices,
But do not cast me off!

ु त अवtया कुलOणांनी ।
परB अoहे र क ं नका ॥ ५० ॥
लोहाअंगीचे दोष । 51. The inherent defects of iron
Are ignored by "pareesa"
मना न आणी परBस । The small streams of the village, Lendi and ohol
Are not rejected by the Godavari.
गांवी¡या लs«या ओहोळास ।
गोदा न लावी परतवaू न ॥ ५१ ॥
मा€यामधील अवघी घाण । 52. I am full of vices within.
By your merciful glance,
आपु¤या कृपाकटाOsक न ॥ Do, do quickly destroy them.
This, only, is the plea of "DAS"
करा करा वेगs हरण ।
हBच yवनंती दासाची ॥ ५२ ॥
प•रसाचा संग होऊन । 53. If after coming in contact with the “pareesa”!
The iron’s inherent defects
लोहाचs हs लोहपण ॥ Do not change, GURUVARA,
जरB न हेय गु वरा हरण । Then, it is to the discredit of the “pareesa”!

तरB हBनWव प•रसासी ॥ ५३ ॥

मला पापी ठे वूं नका । 54. Don’t let me be a sinner


Don’t belittle yourself,
आपण हBनWव घेऊं नका ॥ Look, you are ‘pareesa’, I am the iron;
My discharge is your concern too.
आपण परBस मी लोह दे खा ।
माझी चाड आपणातs ॥ ५४ ॥
बालक अपराध सदै व क•रतs । 55. A child always commits mistakes,
But a mother does not scold;
परB न माता रागावते ॥ Remembering this,
हs आणन
ू tयानातs । Grant me your grace.

कृपाzसाद करावा ॥ ५५ ॥
हे साईनाथ स›गु । 56. Oh, Sad-guru Sainath,
You are my "KAPATURU"!
तूंच माझा क¤पत ॥ You are the means for crossing this worldly
ocean,
भवाjधीचs भoय ता ं ॥ you alone are so - undoubtedly.
तूच अससी aनNचयs ॥ ५६ ॥
तू कामधेनू Uचंतामणी । 57. You are "KAMDHENU"!
You are "CHINTAMANI"!
तंू ‚ान-नभीचा वासरमणी ॥ You are the sun in the sky of knowledge,
तू स›जण
ु ांची भoय खाणी । You are great mine of virtues!
Oh, you are the ladder to heaven!
अथवा सोपान ;वगŸचा ॥ ५७ ॥
हे पु¢यवंता परम पावना । 58. Oh, pious, purest one,
Oh, embodiment of peace and bliss,
हे शांaतमूaतK आनंदघना ॥ Oh, the Supreme Self,
Oh, the non-dual one, the ocean of knowledge;
हे UचW;व पा प•रपूणाK ।
हे भेदर]हता ‚ानiसंधो ॥ ५८ ॥
हे yव‚ानमूaतK नरोuमा । 59. Oh, incarnation of the Supreme wisdom, the best
among men,
हे Oमाशांती¡या aनवासधामा ॥ Oh, abode of forgiveness and peace,
Oh, refuge of devotees,
हे भŠतजनां¡या yव2ामा । Bless me, bless me!
zसीद zसीद मजzती ॥ ५९ ॥
तूंच स›गु मि¡छं दर । 60. You are the Sad-guru MACHINDER
You are the Mahatma JALANDER,
तच
ू महाWमा जालंदर ॥ You are NIVRATINATH, DNYANESHWAR,
KABIR, SHEIKH MOHAMMED, EKNATH, you are.
तूं aनवyृ uनाथ ‚ानेNवर ।
कबीर शेखनाथ तूं ॥ ६० ॥
तूंच बोधला सावंता । 61. You are BODHLA You are SAAVATAMALI,
You are truly RAMDAS,
तूच रामदास तWवतां ॥ You are TUKARAM, Sainath,

ु ाराम साईनाथा ॥ You are SAKHA You are MANIKPRABHU!

ू सखा माणीक zभु ॥ ६१ ॥
या आपु¤या अवताराची । 62. Your present manifestation,
And your manifold nature
परB ओहे अग`य साची ॥ are really difficult to understand!
The knowledge about your caste and creed
ओळख आपु¤या जातीची । You do not reveal to anybody.
होऊं न दे तां कवणातs ॥ ६२ ॥
कोणी आपणां `हणती यवन । 63. Some say you are a Muslim,
Some say you are Brahmin,
कोणी `हणती wाxमण ॥ Thus like Krishna,
You too, are inscrutable!
ऐसी कृlणासमान ।
लBला आपण मां¦डलB ॥ ६३ ॥
2ीकृlणास पाहून । 64. Having observed SHREE KRISHNA,
Different people called him by various names.
नाना zकारs वदले जन ॥ Some call him ‘YADU BUHSAN’
कोणी `हणले यदभ
ु ष
ू ण । Some call him a cowherd.

कोणी `हणाले गुराखी ॥ ६४ ॥


यशोदा `हणे सुकुमार बाळ । 65. YASHODA called him a darling,
KANSA called him a great evil,
कंस `हणे महाकाळ ॥ UDDHAV called him beloved,
ARJUN called him Omniscient.
उ›धव `हणे zेमळ ।
अजKन
ु `हणे ‚ान जेठ• ॥ ६५ ॥
तैसs गु वरा आपणांसी । 66. Thus, oh GURUVARA, To you
According to each person’s conclusion
जs •या¡या मानसी ॥ Based on his mental attitude,
Names are given by them.
योhय वाटे ल aनNचयsसी ।
तs तs तु`हा `हणतसे ॥ ६६ ॥
मशीद आपुलs वसaत;थान । 67. The masjid being your dwelling,
And your ears not being pierced,
yवंधावांचन
ू असती कान ॥ Nothing your offering the ‘FATEHA’
To call you a Muslim is logical!
फ़ाWया¡या त˘हा पाहून ।
यवन `हणणे भाग तु`हां ॥ ६७ ॥
Footnote : The above concusion of Das Ganu is not based on facts.
In the thirteenth verse of seventh Canto of Shri Sai - Charitra,
Hemadpant says:- "His ears were piecred, so how can be called a Yavana? Circumcision he approved, so how can
he be called a Hindu? "He is neither Hindu nor Muslim, Sai is the holy incarnation. Sai is the holy incarnation."
The late Swami Sai- Sharn - Anand has rendered this work of Das Ganu into Gujrati In the foonote to his
translation of the sixty - seventh verse thereof , he observes, "Das Ganu does not appear to have observed
Baba's ears carefully. - As per the translator's own knowledge and observations.

तैसी अhनीची उपासना । 68. Similarly, considering the worship of fire,


As done by you, Lord of Mercy,
पाहूaन आपुलB दयाघना ॥ My own conclusion is
That you are a Hindu!
aनNचय होत आमु¡या मना ।
क‡ं आपण ]हंद ू `हणन
ू ी ॥ ६८ ॥
परB भेद हे oयावहा•रक । 69. But these superficial differences
Would interest only pedagogues;
यातs चाहतील ताªकKक ॥ But for those devotees desirous of knowledge
They are of no consequences.
परB िज‚ासू भाyवक ।
Wयां न वाटे महWव यांचे ॥ ६९ ॥
आपुलB आहे wxमि;थती । 70. You are BRAHMA Itself!
Caste and creed have no relevance to you;
जात गोत ना आपणांzती ॥ You are the Guru Supreme!
You are the creator of this world!
आपण अव®यांचे गु मत
ू Ÿ ।
आहां आधकारण ॥ ७० ॥
यवन-]हंदच
ू े yवपट आलs । 71. There was Hindu - Muslim rivalry;
Therefore to bring about unity and amity,
`हणून तदै Šय कर¢या भलs ॥ The masjid and the fire worship were embraced
by you,
मशीद-अhनीला ;वीका•रलs । To show your “leela” to the devotees.
लBला भŠतांस दावावया ॥ ७१ ॥
आपण जातगोतातीत । 72. You are beyond caste and greed,
You are Brahman, the essence of Truth;
स›व;तु जी कां सत ् ॥ You are That, verily,
You are beyond human conception!
तीच तु`हB साOात ् ।
तकाKतीत साच क‡ं ॥ ७२ ॥
तकKyवतका™चे घोडs । 73. Giving free rein to surmises and conjectures,
Arguments have flourished about you.
चालले ªकती आपणांपढ
ु s ॥ There, my insignificant
Words, how will they prevail?
तेथs माझे बापुडे ।
शjद ]टकतील कोठुनी ॥ ७३ ॥

I cannot remain silent;
मौन न ये ध•रतां मला ॥ Because, for encomium, words
Are normally the only means.

`हणून शjदे क न । 75. Therefore, by means of words,
Whatever description is possible,
जs जs होईल वणKन ॥ That I will always proffer,
With your grace.

आपु¤या कृपाzसादs ॥ ७५ ॥
संतांची योhयता भलB । 76. Saints, I reckon
Higher than gods;
दे वाहून आगळी ॥ For distinctions such as mine and thine
Find not a place in their proximity.

]हर¢यकNयपु-रवणांला । 77. HIRANYAKASHAPU and RAVANA
Were killed because of their hatred of god;
दे व›वेषs मWृ यु आला ॥ Such a deed have never been done by saints.

तैसा एकहB नाहB घडला ।

गोपीचंदे उक‡र«यासी । 78. GOPICHAND, IN the heap of garbage,
Buried JALANDARA;
गो¦डले जालंदरासी ॥ But that sage
Had no rancour for that act.
परB Wया महाW`यासी ।
नाहBं वाटला yवषाद ॥ ७८ ॥
उलट राजाचा उ›धार केला । 79. On the contrary, the king was delivered
from the material world
Uचरं जीव क aन सो¦डला ॥ And was immortalised;
Such is the prowess of the saints,
ऐशा संतां¡या योhयतेला । It is indescribable!
वणKन करावs कोठवरB ॥ ७९ ॥
संत सूयKनारायण । 80. Saints are the Sun,
Their grace is illuminating;
कृपा Wयांची zकाशपण
ु K । Saints are as pleasing as the moon,
Their benign-ness is as gentle as moonlight.
संत सुखद रो]हणी रमण ।
कौमुदB ती तWकृपा ॥ ८० ॥
संत क;तुरB सो••वळा । 81. Saints, are the soothing musk,
Their blessing are like it’s fragrance,
कृपा Wयांची प•रमळ ॥ Saints are the juicy sugarcane,
Their blessings are like its sweetness.
संत इOु रसाळ ।
रसनoहाळी तWकृपा ॥ ८१ ॥
संत सुlटदlु टांzती । 82. Saints, towards the good and the bad,
Are the same, definitely.
समसमान aनिNचती ॥ On the contrary, their love for the sinners
Is immeasurable.
उलट पा~यावरB zीती ।
अलोट Wयांची वसतसे ॥ ८२ ॥
गोदावरBजलांत । 83. In the waters of the Godavari,
Only the soiled clothes come to be cleaned;
मळकट तsच धुवाया येत ॥ The clean ones in a trunk,
Remain far from the Godavari banks.

ु वैकुंठ । 85. The trunk is the eternal abode ;
You are the Godavari, unshakable faith is the ghat
गोदा तु`हB aनlठा घाट ॥ ;
All beings are the garments
जीवाWमे हे च पट । Full of the impurities comprising six vices.
ष«yवकार मळ Wयांचा ॥ ८५ ॥
तुम¡या पदाचs दशKन । 86. The "DARSHAN" of your feet
Is like a bath in the Godavari;
हs च आहे गोदा;bान ॥ Wash away my sins.
Oh, Samarth, and purify me!
अवtया मळातs घालवून ।
पावन करणs समथाK ॥ ८६ ॥
आ`हB जन हे संसारB । 87. We worldly people
Gather layers of impurities again and again;
मळत आह• वर¡यावरB Therefore, we are the right people
For the “DARSHAN” of saints.

संतदशKन घे¢या;तव ॥ ८७ ॥
गौतमीमाजीं yवपल
ु नीर । 88. In the abundant waters of the Godavari
Comes the wash, to be cleansed at the GHATS;
आžण धुणs मळकट घाटावर ॥ If, it is really left unattended,
Then, it is a discredit to the Godavari!

Wयाचs हBनWव गोदे सी ॥ ८८ ॥
तु`हB सघन शीत त वर । 89. You are the cool, shady tree, with abundant
foliage;
आ`हB पांथ;थ साचार ॥ We are the travellers, really,
Suffering from the scorching sun-rays
तापbयाचा हा पखर । Of the three-fold calamities of Life.
तापलासे चंडाशु ॥ ८९ ॥
Wया¡या तापापासन
ू सदया । 90. From the blazing heat, oh compassionate one,
Protect us, Oh GURURAYA.
करा रOण गु राया ॥ The benign grace of your cool shade
Is extraordinary!
सWकृपेची शीतळ छाया ।
ओहे आपुलB लोकोuर ॥ ९० ॥

If one feels the heat of the sun,
जरB लागतs वरन ऊन ॥ Then, who will call that tree
The shade-giving tree?

तुम¡या कृपेवीण पाहBं । 92. Look, without your grace
Nothing can be right in the world;

सखा लाधला धमाK;तव ॥ ९२ ॥
सुqीव - कृपेनs yवभीषणा । 93. Due to the kindness of SUGRIV, BIBHISHANA
Came in contact with King RAM,
साधलासे रामराणा ॥ It is due to the saints,
That Shri Hari is thus glorified.
संतांमुळsच मोठे पणा ।
लाधला 2ीहरBसी ॥ ९३ ॥
•याचs वणKन वेदांसी । 94. BRAHMAN, being formless,
VEDAS cannot describe it.
न होय ऐशा wxमांसी ॥ Be endowing it with forms,
The saints have reduced the importance of the
सगुण करवून भूमीसी । formless!
लाजyवलs संतांनीच ॥ ९४ ॥
दामजीनs बनyवला महार । 95. VAIKUNTHAPATI, husband of RUKMINI,
was made a “mahar” by DAMAJI;
वैकुंठपती िŠमणीवर ॥ To pick up corpses of Buffaloes
CHOKHAMELA made JAGAD-ATMA (God) slog.
चोखोबानs उचल¢या ढोर ।
राबyवलs Wया जगदाWमया ॥ ९५ ॥
संतमहWव जाणून। 96. Knowing the prowess of saints,
Jag-jivan laboured by carrying water.
पाणी वाहB जग•जीवन ॥ Saints have truly lorded,
Over God Himself, who is Eternal Truth
संत खरे च यजमान ।
- Knowledge - Bliss.
सि¡चदानंद zभूचे ॥ ९६ ॥
फार बोलणs न लगे आतां । 97. There is no need to speak more.
You are our mother and our father,
तूंच आ`हा माता yपता ॥ Oh, Sad-guru Sainath,
Dweller of Shirdi village.

बाबा तुम¡या लBलेचा । 98. Baba, Your "LEELAS"
No one can comprehend;
कोणा नलगे पाड साचा ॥ Then, by my plebeian speech
How can it do justice, tell me?

जड-जीवां¡या उ›धाराथK । 99. To save the sinners,
You came to Shirdi;
आपण आला iशडŸत ॥ Pouring water into earthen lamps,
You made them burn.

सवा हात लाकडाची । 100. The wooden plank of absurdly small measures
You turned into your bed, truly;
फळी मंचक क न साची ॥ Thereby displaying to the devotees
Your amazing yogic powers!

शिŠत दाyवलB भŠतजनां ॥ १०० ॥
वांझपणा कैकांचा । 101. The barrenness of many women
You have completely dispelled;

ु हB केलात हरण साचा ॥ The disease of many
You have cured with the "Udi"!
ªकWयेकां¡या रोगांचा ।
–बमोड केलात उदBने ॥ १०१ ॥
वार¢या ऐ]हक संकटे । 102. To ward off worldly difficulties
Is not impossible for you.
तु`हां ‘क़् कांहB अशŠय वाटे ॥ The weight of an ant,
Does the elephant consider as a burden?

ओझs मानी गजपaत ॥ १०२ ॥
असो आतां गु राया । 103. So be it, GURURAYA,
Have mercy on the humble one.
दBनावरB करा दया ॥ I surrender at your feet,
Do not turn me away.

You are richer than KUBER himself,

सागराची शमवावया । 107. To quench the ocean’s
Thirst, adequate water cannot be found on

To warm the fire
व‘हBलागी शेकावया । From where will the heat be found?

जे जे पदाथK पूजेचे । 108. All articles needed for the worship
Are filled with your essence;

For I have not experienced its truth.

बहुतेक क न क¤पना । 111. Mostly with the help of my imagination only
Will I worship you.
क•रत• तुम¡या पूजना ॥ That worship itself, oh, compassionate one,
Do accept from this slave.

मा‘य करा या दासांचे ॥ १११ ॥
आतां zेमा2ुक न । 112. Now with my tears
I bathe your feet;

कफनी शjदलंकाराची । 113. The long tunic ("KAFNI") of these ornamental

घाiलत• हB तु`हां साची ॥ I place on you, sincerely;
This garland of adoration,
zमभाव या सुमनाची । I place round your neck.
माळा ग´यांत घाiलत• ॥ ११३ ॥
धूप कुिWसतपणाचा । 114. The incense of vileness
I burn before You, truly;
तु`हांपुढे जाiळत• साचा ॥
Though it is of impure composition
जरB तो वाईट eoयाचा । Even then, there will be no foul-odour from it
परB न सुटेल घाण Wयासी ॥ ११४ ॥

स›गु yवण इतरb । 115. Elsewhere, than before the Sad-guru,


If incense is burnt,
जे जे धूप जाiळतात ॥ What happens to that incense
Is like this…
Wया धूप eoयाचा तेथ ।
ऐसा zकार होतसे ॥ ११५ ॥
धूपeoयास अhनीचा । 116. When the incense is put on the fire,
The moment it actually touches it
;पशK होतांOणी साचा ॥ The fragrance from the incense
Leaves it instantly.
सुवास स›गुण तदं गींचा ।
जात Wयाला सोडून ॥ ११६ ॥
तुम¡यापुढs उलटs होतs । 117. Before you, it’s contrary;
The impurities burn away in the fire,
घाण तेवढB अhनीत जळते ॥ The good remains for ever
For the world to see.

अOयींचे जगास ॥ ११७ ॥
मनींचs गळा¤या कुिWसतपण । 118. Once the vileness of the mind is burnt away,
The mind will become purer;
मलर]हत होईल मन ॥ Once the Ganga’s impurity is gone,
Then it is holy, naturally
गंगेचs गे¤यागढूळपण ।
मग ती पyवb सहजUच ॥ ११८ ॥
दBप मायामोहाचा । 119. The light of temptations
I kindle, most truly,
पाजiळत• मी हा साचा ॥ From which, may the lustre of asceticism
Be granted to me, oh GURUVARA!
तेणs वैराhयzभेचा ।
होवो गु वरा लाभ मसी ॥ ११९ ॥
शु›ध aनlठे चs iसंहासन । 120. The throne of pure faith
I offer you as a seat;
दे त• बसावया कारण ॥ On receiving it
Accept the offering ("naivedya") of devotion.
Wयाचे क aनयां qहण ।
भिŠतनैवे›य ;वीकारा ॥ १२० ॥
भिŠतनैवे›य तु`हB खाणे । 121. You partake the offerings of devotion,
Give me the essence;
तeस मला पाजणs ॥ Because I am your child
I have a claim on your milk.
कां क‡ं मी तुमचे ता‘हs ।
पयावरB हŠक माझा ॥ १२१ ॥
मन माझs दOणा । 122. My mind is my monetary offering ("DAKSHINA")
That I offer to you;
ती मी अyपKत• आपणां ॥ Therefore, the credit or discredit of any action
Will no longer be mine.

कशाचाहB मजकडे ॥ १२२ ॥
आतां zाथKनापूवKक माb । 123. Now most humbly and devotedly
I do obeisance to you;

Beyond comprehension, compassion incarnate;

Oh, Sainath of Shirdi!

You, the sustainer of the world, VISHNU;
पाता तूं इं]दरापती ॥ The destroyer of the three worlds,
जगbया लया नेता । You are that very RUDRA!

where you are not.

तंू धेनू वWस मी ता‘हs । 130. You are cow, I the calf
You are moon, I the stone melted by its light;
तूं इंद ु चंeकांत मी ॥ At your feet, which are like the Ganges,
Respectfully the slave (DAS) bows down!

I prostrate myself before;
मी क•रत• साlटांग नमन ॥ My sins (demerits), suffering and poverty

तूं गाय मी वास ं । 133. You are the cow and I the calf;
You are the mother and I the child;
तंू माय मी लsकcं ॥ Do not harbour
Any harsh feelings towards me.
माझेyवषयी नको ध ं ।
कठोरता मानसी ॥ १३३ ॥
तूं मलयाUगरB चंदन । 134. You are the sandalwood from Malayagiri;
I’m a thorny shrub.
मी काटे रB झुडुप जाण । You are the life giving waters of Godavari,
I, the greatest sinners.

The impurities of my wicked mind remains

Who will then call you sandalwood?

चंदन तुजला कोण `हणे ॥ १३५ ॥
क;तुरB¡या सहवासs । 136. The proximity of must (“KAASTURI”)
makes even the dust more valuable;
मyृ uका मोल पावतसे ॥ The fragrance of flowers is transmitted
To the thread which ties the garlands.
पुlपासंगे घडतसे ।
वास सूbा म;तक‡ं ॥ १३६ ॥
थोरांची ती हBच रBती । 137. This is the way of the great.
Whosoever they come in touch with,
ते •या •या गोlटB qहण क•रती ॥ To him they impart
A part of their greatness.
Wया Wया व;तु पावyवती ।
ते महWपदा कारणs ॥ १३७ ॥
भ;म कौपीन नंदBचा । 138. Sacred ashes, join cloth and the bull,
SHIVA made symbolic parts of himself;
iशवे केला संqह साचा ॥ Therefore, these objects
Are praised in all quarters.

गौरव होत चहूंकडे ॥ १३८ ॥
गोपरं जनासाठ• । 139. For the amusement of the cowherds,
At Vrindavan, on the banks of the Yamuna,

ृ ावनी यमुनातटB ॥ The lord of the World played “DAHI-KALA”
That too has earned recognition from wise men.
काला खेळला जगजेठ• ।
तोहB मा‘य झाला बध
ु ां ॥ १३९ ॥
तैसा मी तो दरु ाचारB । 140. Similarly, I am a sinner,
But, I am under your protection;
परB आहs तुम¡या पदरBं ॥ Will you not redeem me, Oh, GURURAYA,
From my sinful state?

याचा करा हो गु राया ॥ १४० ॥
ऐ]हक वा पारमाUथKक । 141. Worldly or spiritual,
In whatever objects I seek satisfaction,

ु ॥ I have no doubt, O GURURAYA,
That you will grant me these.
माझे मन हे aनःशंक ।
Wया Wया पुरyवणs गु राया ॥ १४१ ॥
आपु¤या कृपेने ऐसs करा । 142. With your grace,
Control my mind;
मनालागी आवरा ॥ If the oceans are sweetened
There is no fear of their being salty.
गोड के¤यास सागरा ।
Oारोदकपणाची नसे भीती ॥ १४२ ॥
सागरा गोड कर¢याची । 143. To make the oceans sweet
Truly you have the powers.
शिŠत आपणांमtये साची ॥ Therefore, this supplication of Das ganu,
Please concede.

याचना हB पुरB करा ॥ १४३ ॥
कमीपणा जो जो माझा । 144. Whatever my shortcomings,
They are all yours!
तो तो अव›या तुझा ॥ You are the foremost among the spiritual
masters,
iस›धांचा तूं आहे स राजा । So do not stint while giving.
कमीपणा न बरवा तुजसी ॥ १४४ ॥
आतां कशा;तव बोलूं फार । 145. Now, why should I speak more?
You are my only refuge.

ू माझा आधार ॥ The child held in the mother’s arms,
Is naturally without fear.

अस¤या aनभKय सहजUच ॥ १४५ ॥
असो या ;तोbासी । 146. So be it. This hymn of praise,
Whosoever read with love,
जे जे वाचतील zेमsसीं । Their desires
Fulfil, O Lord.

या ;तोbास आपुला वर । 147. Your blessing for this hymn

शुUचभूतK होऊन । 148. After performing all ablutions,
Should this hymn, be recited regularly,
aनWय ;तोb करावs पठण ॥ With a pure and sincere feeling
In your heart.

आपु¤या मानसी ॥ १४८ ॥
हs अशŠय असलs जरB । 149. If this be not possible,
Then, every Thursday.
तरB zWयेक गु वारB ॥ Meditating on the Sad-guru in your mind.
This hymn should be recited.

तsहB अशŠय अस¤यास । 150. If this be not possible
Then on every “Ekadasi”
zWयेक एकादशीस ॥ This hymn should be read
To realize the beneficial effect.

कौतुक Wयाचs पहावया ॥ १५० ॥
;तोbपाठकां उuम गती । 151. One who recites this, with faith
Will ultimately progress spiritually by the Grace
अंती दे ईल गु मूतŸ ॥ of GURU,
Who will satiate the material desires readily,
ऐ]हक वासना सWवरगती । And thereby deliver him from their bondage.

या ;तोbा¡या पारायणs । 152. With repeated recitations of this hymn,
Dull wits will be sharpened.

ु Uध होतील शहाणे ॥ And, if perchance, someone’s life is short,
Then, by recitation; he will live up to a hundred
कोणा आयlु य अस¤या उणs । years!
तो पठणs होय शतायु ॥ १५२ ॥
धनहBनता अस¤या पदरBं । 153. Where wealth is wanting,
KUBER, the Lord of wealth himself will come to
कुबेर येऊन राबेल घरBं ॥ stay,
Oh reading this hymn.
हs ;तोb वाच¤यावरB । This is the Truth, and so it shall be.
सWय सWय –bवाचा ॥ १५३ ॥
संतaतहBना संतान । 154. To the childless, children will be born
On reciting this hymn.
होईल ;तोb के¤या पाठण ॥ And the ailment of one who recites this hymn
Will be dispelled in all directions.
;तोb-पठकाचे संपूणK ।
रोग जातील ]दगंतरा ॥ १५४ ॥
भयUचंता aनवेल । 155. Fear and worry will disappear,
Prestige will increase.
मानमा‘यता वाढे ल ॥ He will realise the imperishable BRAHMAN
With the regular recitation of this hymn.
अyवनाश wxम कळे ल ।
aनWय ;तोbा¡या पारायणs ॥ १५५ ॥
धरा बुध हो ;तोbाyवशीं । 156. Regarding this hymn, Oh wise ones,
Have faith in your hearts
yवNवास आपु¤या मानसीं ॥ Above the efficacy of this hymn;
And give no place
तकKyवतकK कुक¤पनेसी । To doubts and misconceptions.
जागा मळ
ु ी दे ऊ नका ॥ १५६ ॥
iशडŸ Oेbाची वारB करा । 157. Go on pilgrimage to Shirdi,
Concentrate on the lotus feet of Baba,
पाय बाबांचे Uचyuं धरा ॥ Who is the succour of the poor and the meek,
The wish-fulfilling tree for the devotees!
जो अनाथांचा सोयरा ।
भŠतकामक¤पeम

Wया¡या zेरणेक न । 158. It was because of the inspiration received from
Him
हs ;तोb केलs लेखन ॥ That this hymn has been composed.
How else could an insignificant ignorant one, like
मज पामराहातून । me have written it?
