LAB SESSION 1:

EXPARIMENT NO.1

Introduction to PV array (voltage & current characteristic)

Objectives:
 To study and analysis of P-V curves
 To study and analysis of I-V curves
 To study about PV module, it’s input and output pins.

Introduction:
PV module array is the photovoltaic module array. Photovoltaic is used in the solar panel to
produce the electricity from the sun light energy. Radiation of sun at PV system is called irradiance.
Irradiance measure in watt per meter square (w/m2).

Photovoltaic generation of power is caused by electromagnetic radiation separating positive and

negative charge carriers in absorbing material. If an electric field is present, these charges can
produce a current for use in an external circuit. Such fields exist permanently at junctions or in
homogeneities in photovoltaic (PV) cells as ‘built-in’ electrostatic fields and provide the
electromotive force (EMF) for useful power production.

I. SETTING/PARAMETERS

There are different parameters which we can adjust to attain the desired output. We
can also stabilize these parameters to attain the maximum efficiency from the PV
module.
Following are some parameters

 Module.

We can different module types to get our desired power, voltages and current.
Different modules are available on our Maltab platform from which we can select
our choice.

 Strings.

Implements a PV array built of strings of PV modules connected in parallel. Each

string consists of modules connected in series.
Allows modeling of a variety of preset PV modules available from NREL.
By changing strings, we can change the power required and so on.

 Temperature.

Temperature always effecting our PV module and so by selecting different

temperature scale, we are gaining different power and efficiency. So we can
visualize this effect by plotting the different curves by selecting different
temperature ranges.

II. DIAGRAM AND PIN DESCRIPTION

 Input Pins

1. Sun Irradiance describing about dose and direction of sun radiations to

the PV cell module.
2. Temperature which is showing the cell temperature and giving its value
in Degree Celsius.

 Output Pins
i. Positive polarity output of our PV module.
ii. Negative polarity output of our PV module.

III. EXPLANATION

The most basic part of a PV system is the cell. Groups of cells are assembled in a series
to form a module, which is enclosed between sheets of tempered glass or plastic to
protect the cells. A group of modules wired together in one line is called a string, and a
set of module strings installed together is called a PV array. The array may consist of one
or more strings. An array may be designed to generate a specific amount of energy or to
maximize the available roof area. The most common type of PV cell is crystalline silicon
(c-Si). These can be fabricated from either a single silicon crystal (monocrystalline) or
multiple silicon crystals cast in a single block (multicrystalline or polycrystalline). Thin-
film PV cells, however, use alloys, such as amorphous silicon (a-Si), copper indium
gallium diselenide (CIGS), and cadmium telluride (CdTe). Thin-film modules are made by
depositing a very thin layer of semiconductor onto a substrate–usually glass, metal foil,

or plastic. Flexible, thin-film

modules are deposited onto flexible substrates (metal foil or plastic) and encapsulated
in plastics to retain flexibility. Currently, these modules are less efficient than mono- or
multicrystalline-based modules, but also generally cost less.
