7 Sanitary Filtration

Table 4.6.4 Water Quality Assessment of the Parañaque-Zapote River System

Report-Appendix 17 Environmental and Social Conditions in Three Cities, Japan
International Cooperation Agency)

For the final part of the schematic design, a sanitary filtration diagram for the
floodwater shall be provided as part of the overall design. This would make retarding
basin design of this study unique from other standard retarding basin currently being
constructed in the Philippines. The retarding basin in the country only focuses on the
temporary impounding of floodwater to reduce flood. The water quality assessment
data of the Zapote river water is shown above to determine quality of water on the
river. The study shall only give a schematic diagram of materials recommended for
design base on geological and hydrological factors of the site. The knowledge of the
researchers from the course CE electives 3: sanitary engineering is the only basis
applied in the diagram. From the data, an activated sludge schematic diagram shall be
applied to reduce the BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen
Demand) and SS (suspended solids) of the zapote river water sample.

The activated sludge system can be placed southeast of the retarding basin site
as shown.

The schematic diagram of the possible activated sludge system is shown above.
Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) shall be used for the influent and effluent instead
of a metallic pipe. This is due to CPVC pipes resistance to corrosion from the silty soil of
the site compared to metallic pipes. The aeration tank shall feature a direct oxidation
process in reducing BOD and COD of the floodwater in which the organic compounds of
concentrated hydrogen peroxide on the tank will reduce BOD and COD contents. The
final settling of the tank shall be made of a rectangular sedimentation tank due to the
size of tank being efficient in conveying direct flow. It will reduce the suspended solids
present on the floodwater. Lastly, a potable stainless steel storage tank is
recommended for impounding treated water due to its storage capacity and water
containment variety without concerns for possible adverse affects in human
consumption.
