Design Analysis

For this analysis I chose a powerful piece of graphic design that responds to the recent

gun violence in schools. In this image, we see a gun that takes up most of the space to catch the

eye of the viewer. Then we see pencils all around and writing that spells out gun control. The

background of the image is red, which is an eye catching primary color. The pencils, which are

yellow, another primary color stand out on the red background and the contrast helps catch the

eye of the viewer and makes the topic stand out, schools. The black handgun is the first thing that

catches the viewer's eye, next the red background, yellow pencils and then the small facts that

have details on why we need gun control.

The clear message comes across by using different design elements. Color is the most

obvious of the few. As I mentioned earlier, the primary colors used make the elements of the

poster stand out and catch the eye. The pencils, which stand as lines being the second element of

design, break up the poster and make it more visibly pleasing. They also use shapes inside of the

pencil shavings to represent bullet holes which bring realism to the design. The lack of alignment

in the poster aids the crazy relationship between the two polar opposite topics, schools and guns,

that seem to have an unfortunate relationship nowadays.

This poster is an obvious medium between the activists and the audience they are trying

to reach. The most distinctive feature on the poster is the gun and the letters around it spelling
out gun control. At first, the picture shows activism and strength, but as you look closer, it also

shows vulnerability. The designer obviously made this to raise awareness about gun control and

it means this topic is very important to them. Evidence that supports my interpretation would be

from the real world. All the mass school shootings that have taken place over the previous years

are evidence for the poster- maker and it is clear they use this based on the statistics they use. In

my opinion, this is a good piece of work. I think it meets the criteria of a good, inspirational

piece. The work I have done in graphics have prepared me and shown me these elements of

design that gives me the criteria to judge the piece. The judgement outside of the design comes

from the political drive of others.

This work of art is obviously well thought out and an inspiring piece of design. The

elements used come together to create an eye- catching poster that, although a controversial topic

in the political world, show what is important, which is the safety of our schools.
