Lesson 3: Wayang Kulit

Date: March 5 – 6, 2019

Objectives:

1. Determine the technical development of action in a one-act play

2. Recognize irony
3. Identify and use literary devices
4. Identify theatre personnel
5. Do characterization
6. Write a character sketch

I. Introduction
ACTIVITY NO. Isn’t it Ironic?
Let the students listen to the song No One Is to Blame by Howard Jones. Tell them to analyze the lyrics of the song. Ask them what kind of situations were presented in the
song. Highlight the fact that the song uses irony.

ACTIVITY NO. 2 Motive Question

The teacher will tell the students to find out the irony that happens in the story.

II. Development of the Lesson

ACTIVITY NO. 1 Literary Selection: The Boor by Anton Chekhov
Give the students a background on the author.

ACTIVITY NO. 2 Let’s Process

Let the students work in triads in answering the following questions:
1) Who was in mourning? Why?
2) Why did Smirnov visit Mrs. Popov?
3) How much debt was left by Nikolai to Smirnov?
4) Why was Nikolai indebted to Smirnov?
5) Why can’t Mrs. Popov pay Smirnov?
6) Why was Smirnov insistent that Mrs. Popov pay her husband’s debt immediately?
7) What evidence did Mrs. Popov show about her husband’s unfaithfulness?
8) When the argument between the two heated up, what was their plan?
9) How did the story end?
10) If you were the author, how would you end the story?
11) Is the play clear enough to be understood by the reader? Why or why not?
12) Do the characters’ dialogues reveal their true selves? Explain.
13) What is the twist of event in the story?

ACTIVITY NO. 3 Portions

Tell the students that just as novels or short stories have different plot elements, one-act plays also have. Review the elements of a plot; then, present the technical
development of action in a one-act play. Then, divide the students into small groups and let them identify the parts of the plot of The Boor. The students should be guided by the
graphic organizer on p. 255 of their textbook.

ACTIVITY NO. 4 Behind the Curtain

Tell the students that in every theatrical production, what we only usually notice is the cast of characters. We tend to forget that there are a lot of people who are
instrumental in bringing a play to life. Introduce to the students the people who are responsible for the whole production.

ACTIVITY NO. 5 Profiling

Do a characterization of the two main characters of The Boor, Smirnov and Mrs. Popov. Emphasize that characterization does not only depend on direct characterization
(what is found in the text itself), but rather it can be done by looking at how the character speaks, how he/she treats others, how he/she acts, and what others say about him/her.
III. Closure

Based on the activity above let them choose a teacher to profile. Then the students will make a character sketch of their chosen teacher.
