SECTION XIV
NOTES: There are many reflexive Spanish verbs which have mean¬
ings all of which are readily understood if one knows the meanings of the
non-reflexive form. These do not appear in the list presented here. The verb
sorprender (“to surprise”), sorprenderse (“to be surprised”) is clearly of
the type excluded. The verb secar (“to dry”), secarse (“to dry oneself, to be¬
come dry, to dry up, to become withered, to become thin”) is typical of a bor¬
derline case because the last two meanings might not always be recognized
as derivatives of “to dry”. (It was omitted from the presented list.) There are
many of these borderline cases not included herein.
A good many of the verbs listed have a great variety of meanings. In
these cases a selection (adequate to show the contrast between the re¬
flexive and non-reflexive forms) was made, omitting other meanings to con-
serve space.
Entries marked with an asterisk (*) show only the “unexpected”
meaning(s), whereas the reflexive form is at times used in the same or
nearly same sense as the non-reflexive form. For example, dañar (“to hurt,
harm, etc”) can in the reflexive form dañarse, have the meanings “to hurt
oneself’, “to be harmed”, etc., but also has the meanings “to rot” or “to
spoil”. The asterisk marking is somewhat arbitrary and the student may
find additional cases to which he would choose to apply the marking.
