Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

There's no doubt that technology changed almost every

aspect of our lives in the 21st century. A few decades ago, where

modern gadgets weren't around and the concepts that built them

were still in its infancy, people don't have the luxury of what we have

today. Internet was slow and sluggish. Gadgets were mostly reserved

for the rich because of their hefty price despite being bulky and

incredibly slow. At that point of time, carrying a handheld device that

can do what a telephone, television, computer, and a lot more

gadgets can do that can fit right in your pocket is pretty much an

impossibility, yet here we are. The biggest tech companies have

brought us top of the line smartphones and portable gadgets.

The application of this revolutionary technology is limitless.

one of those is its capability to aid the learning process of a

student. It can be used to search for information that would be

otherwise hard to find if it weren't because of internet. Back then,

when google wasn't a thing and keypad phones are the reigning
king of gadgets, people have to undergo the gruelling task of

searching for information in libraries wherein now, it literally just

Takes a few clicks to find out the thing that you are looking for. This is now

widely used by students when it comes making home works, reviewing topics,

and a lot more. Even though it seems promising and useful, some argue that

gadget usage can in fact, affect the performance of students negatively. People

say that instead of studying, most of the students just use social media or play

games instead. According to them, this habit wastes the time of the students

that could be spent in learning something instead.

This popular belief clashes directly to what the 21st century students are

used to. While it is true that some individuals do actually get lower grades due

to excessive use of gadgets in home and even in school, the same argument

can't be used to the rest of the students. That's what we are looking to find out.

For a long time, technology is already being used in teaching practices. NCTM

Position Statement (1996) states:

"Research and experience have clearly demonstrated the potential of

calculators to enhance students' learning in mathematics. The cognitive gain in

number sense, conceptual development, and visualization can empower and

motivate students to engage in true mathematical problems solving at a level

previously denied to all but the most talented. The calculator is an essential tool

for all students in mathematics. "

Much has been written about how to use technology to increase

student achievement. A number of new technologies are emerging to

support and enhance learning in our schools. Many of these

technologies are not used to replace traditional teaching methods,

but instead used as simple methodologies to enhance student

learning (Riley, Beard and Strain, 47).

aim to increase efficiency of course delivery, enrich course participation

and increase flexibility in meeting student needs (Collis, 1998). Flexibility

in meeting the needs of different subgroups of students or individual

students is facilitated because the Web medium allows for diversity of

course content, support material and presentational styles (Moguilevsky

et al., 1999). Developing and providing appropriate forms of support for

learners also has to take into account the nature of the subject matter

being taught. Research methods courses pose particular challenges for

teaching because of the interplay between “student-specific and task-

specific factors” (Laurillard 1993, p.31).

This study will determine the success of an instructional website in

guiding students while writing a research paper. With most of the students

having an internet access, gaining knowledge will always be on the go

especially to those students having difficulty in writing a research paper.

Research Locale

The study is conducted in Luakan National High School at Luacan,

Dinalupihan, Bataan in the academic year of 2018-2019. The said public

high school opened formally in June 1966, during the term of former

Mayor Jose C. Payumo Jr. As the school erected on one-hectare lot, it was

initially named Luacan Barrio High School which eventually became

Dinalupihan Municipal High School. Then again, it was changed into

Luakan High School until it was finally named Luakan National High

School. With only seventy-five (75) initial students, Luakan National High

School grew its population up and now it is recognized as one of the

biggest high school in Dinalupihan based on its population.

Currently, in the year of 2019, the principal of Luakan National

High School is Ms. Ara S. Velasco, Principal II, while the Senior High

School Department is being headed by the school assistant principal

Mr. Romualdo S. Comia, Principal II. This study focused mainly on the

Senior High School, particularly in Grade 12 having two hundred and

thirty-nine (239) of total enrollees as of January 2019.

Conceptual Framework

The Figure 2 shows the Paradigm Diagram of the conceptual

framework of the study. The diagram shows three significant components:

Input, Process, and Output. The profile of the respondents is included. To

be specific, it includes the gender, frequency of gadget usage, and the

respondents’ monthly family income. As for the next component, Process

shows the instruments used in gathering data in which for this study—

survey questionnaires. It is composed of four (4) parts which will

thoroughly interrogate the respondents with questions that are

appropriate and those which will answer the research questions.

Analyzation of data will be done through getting the frequency

distribution, percentage, and the weighted mean for the set of data. Lastly,

the factors that will help student researchers in writing through an

instructional website can be seen in the Output.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to know the different factors that might help student

researcher in writing a research paper through an instructional website at

Luakan National High School for the Academic Year 2018-2019.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in relation to the

following variables?

1.1 . Gender;

1.2 . Frequency of Gadget Usage;

1.3 . Monthly Family Income.

2. What kind of instructions in the website will help

student researchers?

3. In what ways will the interface effectively disseminate

the information?

4. What are the possible challenges that the website might encounter?

Scope and Delimitation

The study will provide information concerning the factors that

will help student researchers in writing a research paper through an

instructional website. The respondents in this study is

specifically Grade 12 students in Luakan National High School

for the academic year 2018-2019 under the K-12 Curriculum

since the students have Research as an applied subject.

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute mainly to the improvement of

the future students’ research paper in a way that a website

wherein all of the possible information that might be used in

writing is all compiled for a more efficient writing. On the

other hand, this study will also benefit the following:

Research Advisers—who might gain useful ideas and

references from the website that will help them in

disseminating information to the student.

School Administrators—to formulate new teaching

strategies in order to effectively educate future

researchers with the gathered data.

Parents of Student Researchers—who are also affected

with the tight schedules and budget of the researchers

in order to accomplish a research paper.

Definition of Terms

For clarification and better understanding of the content

of this research, the following terms are operationally defined:

Computer Literacy. Computer literacy is the ability to

use computers and related technology efficiently, with

a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to

programming and advanced problem solving.

Internet. A computer network consisting of a worldwide

network of computer networks that facilitate data

transmission and exchange.

K-12 Curriculum. K-12 is a program that covers kindergarten and

twelve (12) years of basic education to provide sufficient time for

mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and

prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level

skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Research Paper. A research paper is a piece of academic writing

based on its author's original research on a particular topic, and

the analysis and interpretation of the research findings.

Research. Research comprises "creative and systematic work

undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge, including

knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this

stock of knowledge to devise new applications."

Website. A location (address) that is connected to the

internet to provide one or more web pages or other content,

usually maintained by a single person or organization and

hosted on one or more computer servers.

World Wide Web. Computer network consisting of a collection

of internet sites that offer text and graphics and sound and

animation resources through the hypertext transfer protocol.
