INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS & EARTHQUAKE ENGG: CE-409

Assignment 02

(a) Differentiate between response history and response spectrum, with help of diagrams

(b) Calculate the base shear coefficient, seismic demand and peak structural
displacement, for a 2% damped system with 𝑢̈ 𝑜 𝑡 =15 ft/sec2 having a fundamental
natural time period of 0.5 sec and a lateral stiffness of 200 k/in (10+10)

II
A small one-story reinforced-concrete building shown in Figure 1 is idealized as a
massless frame supporting a total dead load of 10 kips at the beam level. Each 12-in.-
square column is hinged at the base; the beam may be assumed to be rigid in flexure; and
E = 3000 ksi. Determine the peak response of this structure to ground motion characterized
by the design spectrum of Figure 2 scaled to 0.3g peak ground acceleration. The response
quantities of interest are the displacement at the top of the frame and the bending moments
in the two columns. (15)

III
(a) Discuss the step by step procedure for constructing deformation, Pseudo velocity and
Pseudo acceleration response spectra from a given accelerogram.
(b) A full water tank is supported on a cantilever tower. It is idealized as an SDF system
with weight w = 125 kips, lateral stiffness = 5 kips/in., and damping ratio ζ = 5%. The
tower supporting the tank is to be designed for ground motion characterized by the
design spectrum of Figure 1 scaled to 0.35g peak ground acceleration. Determine the
design values of lateral deformation and base shear. (10+15)
IV
Consider a 5% damped elasto plastic structural system with elastic time period of 0.5
sec and a height of 30 ft. The inelastic base shear coefficient of structural system is 0.3.
Determine Ductility demand and check that whether structural system can deform to a
maximum displacement of 0.75 inch without collapse. The design earthquake is
determined by using elastic design spectrum given by Figure 1 multiplied by 0.35. (20)
V

(a) Differentiate between Response spectrum and design spectrum.

(b) Differentiate between ductility capacity of an elastoplastic system and ductility
demand?
(c) A single-story R.C. frame is idealized for structural analysis as a massless frame
supporting a total dead load of 15,000 lb at the beam level. The structure is supported
on two columns, both of which have cross-sectional area of 18″ * 18″ and have fixed-
ended bases. The heights of columns are 15 ft and 10 ft. If the building is to be designed
for the design spectrum of Figure 1 scaled to PGA of 0.25g, determine the design
values of lateral deformation and bending moment in the columns. Assume that the
beam is too stiff as compared to connected columns. Take Econc= 3*106 psi and ζ =5%.
