Different methods of birth control.

1. Abstinence - is when you do not engage in any sort of sexual activity at any
time (ie. no contact between your genitals and any part of your partner’s body).
This is the only 100% effective way to ensure you do not become pregnant or
contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

2. The sponge - (also known as the Today Sponge) is a squishy porous foam
object which is inserted into the vagina before intercourse. It is made of plastic
foam and contains spermicide to immobilize sperm as it comes in contact with the
sponge.

3. A birth control patch - is commonly known as Ortho Evra (or Evra patch). The
beige patch sticks to the skin and helps prevent pregnancy. The patch is applied
to the skin once a week for three weeks straight. The forth week does not require
a patch.

4. A birth control vaginal ring - is commonly known by the brand name

NuvaRing. It is a small, flexible ring that a women inserts into her vagina once a
month to prevent pregnancy. It stays there for a three week period and is taken
out for the last week of the month.

5. Birth control pills - are a medication that women take on a daily basis to
prevent pregnancy. Sometimes they are referred to as oral contraception or “the
pill”.

6. This birth control method - is commonly known by the brand name Depo-
Provera (or DMPA). The hormone shot comes in the form of an injection. It
prevents pregnancy for up to three months after injection.

7. An implant- the size of a cardboard matchstick, is implanted underneath the

skin of the upper arm. There are two brands that offer this implant. They
are Nexplanon and Implanon. This birth control method will help protect against
pregnancy for up to 3 years.

8. Birth control apps - also known as digital birth control, are a new player in the
landscape of contraceptive health. While monitoring fertility through period
tracking is no new concept, advances in technology and the age of the
smartphone have made this more user-friendly and accessible.
9. A female condom - is a pouch that you put inside the vagina to reduce the risk
of pregnancy. There are several brands of female condoms including
Femidom, FC2, Reality and Protectiv.

10. A cervical cap (popularly - known by the brand name FemCap), is a small cup
shaped object made from silicone. It is inserted deep into the vagina, before sex,
and rests against the cervix to prevent pregnancy. They are a safe and
effective birth control option.

11. Outercourse - is different depending on who you talk to. Some people believe
that it is any sexual activity that does not include vaginal intercourse. Other
people believe it means no sexual penetration of any kind (anal, oral, or vaginal).

12. vasectomy - is a permanent birth control option for men, that eliminates the
risk of impregnating a woman. Getting a vasectomy can be reversed but the
reversal procedure is very expensive and can be less successful the longer you
wait. There is also no guarantee that the reversal will work.

13. A diaphragm - is a piece of dome shaped silicon which is inserted into the
vagina, to cover the cervix and reduce the risk of pregnancy.

14. Fertility Awareness Methods - are also referred to as FAM birth control or
“natural family planning”. They consist of keeping track of ovulation (the release
of an egg) and timing sexual activity so it coincides with times of the month which
are less conducive to pregnancy. In this way, a woman can abstain from sex or
use extra protection during times in which she is most fertile.

15. Pull-out - method, withdrawal involves removing the penis from the vagina
before ejaculation occurs. This is done in order to prevent insemination from
taking place. Considering withdrawal to be a legitimate form of birth control is the
subject of some debate. However, it does function in lowering the likelihood of
impregnation to some extent.

16. The morning-after pill - (also known by the brand name Plan B), is emergency
contraception that a woman takes to prevent pregnancy. It’s a form of birth
control which is used after unprotected sex takes place.

17. Spermicide - It is a substance which reduces the risk of pregnancy by

heavily reducing sperm movement. It usually comes in the form of
cream, gel, foam, film or suppositories.

18. Tubal Ligation - is also knows as Tubal Sterilization or Sterilization for women.
It is a permanent procedure that women undergo to prevent pregnancy. During
this procedure, a health care professional will close or block a woman’s fallopian
tubes.

19. IUD (Intrauterine Device) - is a small t-shaped device that is made out of flexible
plastic. The t-shaped device is inserted into a woman’s uterus to prevent
pregnancy. It is an effective, long-term birth control method. However, if you
ever do want to become pregnant, the IUD can easily be removed because they
are not permanent.
