First Reading: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Some men came down from Judaea and taught the
brothers, 'Unless you have yourselves circumcised
in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.' This
led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas
had a long argument with these men it was
arranged that Paul and Barnabas and others of the
church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the
problem with the apostles and elders. Then the
apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to
send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole
church concurred with this. They chose Judas
known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men
in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to
take with them: 'The apostles and elders, your
brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan
birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that
some of our members have disturbed you with their
demands and have unsettled your minds. They
acted without any authority from us, and so we
have decided unanimously to elect delegates and
to send them to you with Barnabas and Paul, men
we highly respect who have dedicated their lives to
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accordingly we
are sending you Judas and Silas, who will confirm
by word of mouth what we have written in this
letter. It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by
ourselves not to saddle you with any burden
beyond these essentials: you are to abstain from
food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat
of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid
these, and you will do what is right. Farewell.'

Second Reading: Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23
A reading from the book of the Apocalypse
In the spirit, the angel took me to the top of an
enormous high mountain and showed me
Jerusalem, the holy city, coming down from God
out of heaven. It had all the radiant glory of God
and glittered like some precious jewel or crystal-
clear diamond. The walls of it were of a great
height, and had twelve gates; at each of the
twelve gates there was an angel, and over the
gates were written the names of the twelve tribes
of Israel; on the east there were three gates, on
the north three gates, on the south three gates,
and on the west three gates. The city walls stood
on twelve foundation stones, each one of which
bore the name of one of the twelve apostles of
the Lamb.
I saw that there was no temple in the city since
the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb were
themselves the temple, and the city did not need
the sun or the moon for light, since it was lit by
the radiant glory of God and the Lamb was a
lighted torch for it.

Gospel: John 14:23-29 Blessed are the poor

A reading from the holy Gospel according to
John
Jesus said to his disciples: 'If anyone loves me
he will keep my word, and my Father will love
him, and we shall come to him and make our
home with him. Those who do not love me do
not keep my words. And my word is not my
own; it is the word of the one who sent me. I
have said these things to you while still with
you; but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you
everything and remind you of all I have said to
you. Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I
give you, a peace the world cannot give, this is
my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled
or afraid. You heard me say: I am going away,
and shall return. If you loved me you would
have been glad to know that I am going to the
Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have
told you this now, before it happens, so that
when it does happen you may believe.'

Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they
shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called upon God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter
all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward is great in heaven.
Have you been with a dying relative or close friend who
gently said farewell to dear ones with love and gratitude for
their care and friendship during life? It can be truly
heartrending, but beautiful also, particularly when people die
with their hearts full of hope and trust that God will welcome
them joyfully in an eternal home. It is as if such a dying
person were giving a blessing to family and friends. This
custom of blessing is something we have perhaps forgotten
in our age, but it is deep in our history and very strong in the
Bible, as when Jacob blesses his sons. Blessing invokes
God’s love and protection. As St Luke reminds us today,
Jesus draws on this power of blessing, in accord with his
mission to bring Good News to the poor. In our ordinary
civic affairs, the accolades often go to the successful, the
rich, the powerful, the fashion gurus, famous writers and
movie stars. In the Beatitudes, Jesus turns such views
upside down. ‘Blessed are the poor, for theirs in the
Kingdom of God.’ This astonishingly blunt sentence
captures Jesus’ core message. Unfortunately some gospel
translations use ‘Happy are the poor’, missing the force and
meaning of ‘Blessed’. Luke is not talking in metaphors, but
saying the poor are those who experience real hunger, who
weep in their troubles, and who are despised and treated as
criminals because they believe in Jesus. God blesses such
people not because they are more worthy, but precisely
because they are considered worthless. The Beatitudes tell
us what is deepest in God’s heart: his compassion and
astonishing concern for people in such distress. The ‘poor’
is the Bible’s code word, and as Pope Francis reminds us
often, it includes everyone experiencing pain or suffering
which is most keenly felt by the vulnerable and
impoverished. Jesus then sternly warns that the rich and
comfortably off are not blessed by God. This is very
discomforting for us who are all relatively rich, as we can
easily turn away from people in distress, thinking we are too
busy or are powerless. Pope Francis responds that we can
all do something, no matter how small, even if it is just a
smile or a friendly word to a lonely person or someone
begging on the street. Even giving a glass of water to a
thirsty person reflects God’s concern.
Together, we can do much more. Pope Francis urges us to
support global efforts to eliminate hunger and the worst
forms of poverty through the UN Sustainable Development
Goals, and at the same time preserve the Earth from climate
change. In this way, with St Francis, let us bless the Earth.
