Example: data:

2 2000 1000 1500
3 6500 3500 5000
‐ Assume there is a gas kick is expected comes from depth 6500 ft and If the well is closed by
BOP (SHUT IN PRESSURE, SIP) :
1‐ Before the gas comes to the hole, What is the pressure at(4000, 2000 ,0) psi if the mud
density is 9 pp ?
2‐ After the gas displaces (pushes) the mud and the gas fills the hole , what is the pressure
due to gas kick @ depth :
a‐ 4000 ft
b‐ 2000 ft (@ 13 3/8’’ shoe)
Assume gas gradient is 0.021 psi /ft
SOL :
1‐
@ depth 4000 ft :
13 3/8 ‘’ casing shoe
the hydrostatic pressure due to the mud colom:
= 6500 – 4000 = 2500 ft
4000ft
Ph = 0.052 x h x density
= 0.052 x 2500 x 9 = 1170 psi
The 1170 psi is applied on the bottom hole, @ 6500 ft
12 ¼ ‘’ ( hole)
The result of the two forces ( the weight of the 2500 ft of 9 ppg
@ 6500 ft
mud and the pore pressure (3500 psi )) is :
3500 ‐1170 = 2330 psi
This pressure is at depth 4000 psi .@ depth 2000ft :
The pressure @ depth 2000
= 3500 psi ‐ 0.052 x 9 x (6500‐2000) =1394 psi
@ zero depth

Fig: before the gas enters to the well
3‐ After gas kick enters to the well :
3500‐0.021 x (6500‐0) = 3363.5 psi
3500‐0.021 x (6500‐2000) = 3405.5 psi
3500‐0.021 x (6500‐4000) = 3447.5 psi
3500‐0.021 x (6500‐6500) = 3500 psi
