TEMS & Air Sus ension

TEAM Pub. No. TTM306EN

FOREWORD

This Training Manual has been prepared f o r the use of technicians employed by Toy ota' s overseas
distributors and dealers. This manual, "TEM S & Air Suspensio n " , is Volume 6 of the thirteen
Training Manuals which constitute Step 3 of the program of skills which all Toyota New TEAM *
technicians should master. It should also be used by the instructor in conjunction with the
accompanying Instruction Guide.

The titles of the New TEAM Step 3 Training Manuals are as follows:

VOL. TRAINING MANUALS VOL. TRAINING MANUALS

1 TCCS (Toyota Computer-Controlled System) 8 NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness)

2 Turbocharger & Supercharger 9 Fundamentals of Electronics

3 Diesel Injection Pump 10 CCS (Cruise Control System)

4 ECT (Electronically-Controlled Transmission) 11 Car Audio System

5 Full-Time 4WD 12 Automatic Air Conditioning System

6 TEMS & Air Suspension 13 SRS Airbag & Seat Belt Pretensioner

7 ABS & Traction Control System

It is not enough just to "know" or "understand" - you need to master each task so that you can do
it. For this reason, theory and practice have been combined in this Training Manual. The top of each
page is marked either with a C
symbol to indicate that it is a Theory page or a ~ symbol to
indicate that it is a Practice page.

The following notations often occur in this manual, with the meanings as explained:

A potentially hazardous situation which could result in injury to people may

CAUT ION
occur if instructions are not followed.
Damage to the vehicle or components may occur if instructions are not
NOTICE
followed.
NOTE Notes or comments not included under the above two headings.
Information not required to pass the TEAM certification, but which may be
REFERE NCE useful to instructors and to trainees who wish to gain a deeper knowledge
of the subject.

* TEAM : TEAM stands for "Technical Educat ion for Automotive Mastery", which is a training program divid ed into three
steps according to the technician's technical level. This program makes it possible for t echnicians to receive the appropriate
training for their level in a systematic manner so as to help th em achieve the skills and efficiency of skilled technicians in the
shortest possible time.
This Training Manual explains the TEMS (Toyota Electronically-modulated Suspension) which is
used in the Toyota Supra (MA70), and the Electronically-modulated Air Suspension which is used in
the Lexus LS 400 (UCL 10).

The main points to keep in mind when inspecting the electronic control components of the TEMS
(Toyota Supra) and air suspension (Lexus LS 400) are also included here.

All information contained in this manual is the most up-to-date at the time of publication. However,
we reserve the right to make changes without prior notice.

COM PONENT FUNCTION

Select or switch Consists of 2 push -buttons, NORMAL and SPORT, by which the
driver selects the damping force mode.
Steering sensor This detects the direction in which the steering wheel is turned, and
the turning angle of the steering wheel.
Stop light switch This sends a braking signal to the TEMS ECU.
Speed sensor Thi s sends a vehicle speed signal to the TEM S ECU.
Throttle position sensor This detects the throttle valve op ening angle and sends signals to
(Engine ECU) the TEMS ECU via t he Engine ECU.
Neutral start sw itch* T h is sends signals to tell the T EM S ECU wh en the shift lever is
(AfT vehicles only) in the "N" or "P" range.
TEM S ECU Bas e d on signals from each sensor, this controls the shock
absorber damping force according to the mode selected.
Actuator Base d on signals from the T EM S ECU , the actuator drives the
shock absorber control rod (a rotary valve), thereby changing t he
damping force.
Shock absorber Each shock abso rbe r has a built -in rotary valve which chang es the
damping force in 3 st ages .
TEMS indicator This indicates the selected damping force (Soft, M edium or Firm )
of the shock absorbers.
Check connector The steering sensor circuitry and damping forc e can be checked
by connecting t he Ts and E, t erm inals with t his connector.

* The neutral sta rt sw itch wa s no t used as a TEMS sensor beginning with 1987 models.

COMPONENT FUNCTION
LRC switch There are 2 positions, NORM and SPORT, by which the driver can
select the shock absorber damping force and spring rate mode.
Steering sensor This detects the direction in which the steering wheel is turned and the
turning angle.
Stop light switch This sends a braking signal to the Suspension ECU.
Throttle position sensor, This detects the throttl e valve opening ang le and sends appropriat e
Eng ine & Tran smission ECU signals to the Suspension ECU through th e Engine & Transmi ssion ECU.
No.1 speed sensor and This sends a vehicle speed signal to th e Suspension ECU through the
combination meter combination meter.
Height control sensor This detects the vehicle height by sensing the suspension lower arm
position.
Height control switch There are 2 positions, NORM and HIGH, by which the driver can
select the desired vehicle height.
Height control ON/O FF switch This permits or prohibits the operation of vehicle height control.
Door courtesy switch This detects the door position (opened or closed).
IC regulator (in alternator) This detects whether or not the engine is running.
Suspension ECU This controls the damping force, spring rate, and vehicle height
according to the vehicle operating conditions.
Suspension control actuator This changes the damping force and spring rate based on signals
from the Suspension ECU.
Pneumatic cylinder In each cylinder, there is a shock absorber which changes the damping
force in 3 stages, and a main and a sub-air chamber which change t he
spring rate in 2 stages. There is also a rolling diaphragm which changes
the target vehicle height in 2 stages*.
LRC indicator light This lights up to indicate that the damping force and spring rate are in the
"SPORT" mode as selected by the LRC switch.
No.2 height control relay This supplies electric current t o the fou r height control sensors and t o the
Suspension ECU.
No.1 height control relay This supplies electric current to the height control compressor motor.
Height control compressor This supplies compressed air to increase the vehicle height.
Height control air dryer & • The height control air dryer removes moisture from the compressed air.
exhaust valve • The exhaust valve discharges compressed air into the atmosphere
from the pneumatic cylinders to lower the vehicl e.
No.1 and No.2 height control These valves supply and discharge compressed air to and from t he air
valves chambers in the four pneumatic cylinders (right and left front, right and
left rear).
Height control indicator lights This indicates the target vehicle height to the driver. It also lights up to
warn the driver that the Suspension ECU detects a malfunction in the
suspension control system.

CONTROL SYSTEM (for UCF20)

REFERENCE - - - -- - - - -- - -- - - - - -- -- - -- - - - --------...
EM AS for UCF20
DESCRIPTION
The electronically modulated air suspension system of the UCF20 is an advancement of the system of the
previous model. While its basic construction and operation remain the same as that of the previous
model, it offers the improvements described below. As a result, the effect of the road bumps on the vehi-
cle in various road and driving conditions has been minimized and a stable vehicle posture is maintain ed.
• Front and rear acceleration sensors have been newly added, linear type height control sensors have
been adopted, and the control methods of the suspension ECU have been improved. As a result, it has
been possible to fine-tune the suspension to provide optimal damping force against undulations of the
road.
• In conjunction with the adoption of the suspension system with higher functions, the LRC (Lexus Ride
Control) swi tch has been discontinued.
• The damping force range of the shock absorber has been wider than the previous model, and the
damping operation has been changed from 3 steps type to a continuously variable type.
• As a result of adopting a step motor in the suspension control actuator, the variable steps of the shock
absorber damping force has been changed from 3 to 9 steps.
• Riding comfort has been enhanced with the increased capacity of the pneumatic cylinder air chamber.
However, the switching of the spring rate by actuating the sub-air chamber with compressed air, as
used in the previous model, has been discontinued.
• T he rebound spring enclosed inside the shock absorber provide a the excellent vehicle 's postural
change during cornering and braking.
• Fu rt herm o re, the vehicle height variation associated with changes in t he passenger and luggage load,
after the ignition switch is turned off, has been restrained . Con sequently, the "ignition switch OFF con-
trol" found in t he previous model has been discontinued.
• When the ignition switch is turned OFF, the vehicle height control operation ceases. Therefore, the
height control ON/O FF switch located in the luggage compartment of t he previous model has been dis-
continued.

CONTROL SYSTEM (for UCF20)

CONSTRUCTION & OPERATION (f o r UCF20)

Height control sens or

These 4 sensors detect the vehicle height and displacement volume of each suspension caused by
unevenness of the road. However, this system has been modified from the previous 16-step output type
consisting of the slotted disc and a photo interrupter to a linear output type utilizing the variation in resis-
tance through a sliding movement. This change provides the sensor with a more precise detection capa -
bility.
As in the previous model, the variation in the vehicle height causes the rotational board integrated with a
shaft and link to rotate via the control link. Accordingly, the Suspension ECU can detect the vehicle height
variation through the voltage variation.

FRONT HEIGHT CONTROL SENS OR

Acce le rat io n sens or

An acceleration sensor is provided inside each front height control sensor, and for the rear, under the
right side of the luggage compartment, making a total of 3 sensors. These sensors detect the vehicle ver-
tical acceleration at the front left and right, and rear right positions. The vertical acceleration of the rear
left area is calculated by the Suspension ECU, based on the values obtained by these 3 sensors.
Inside each sensor, 2 piezoelectric ceramic discs are fixed on both sides of a diaphragm which is support-
ed by its center. When acceleration is applied to the entire sensor, the piezoelectric ceramic discs bend
from their own weight. As a characteristic of piezoelectric ceramic, they generate electricity in proportion
to the rate of their curvature. This is converted, via an electronic circuit, to a voltage in proportion to the
acceleration rate and is output to the Suspension ECU.

The suspension control actuator drives the rotary valve of the shock absorber to change the shock
absorber damping force.
The 3-step solenoid used in the previous model for driving the actuator has been changed to a 9-step
step motor which offers quicker response and fine control. As a result, a fine suspension control has been
made possible for undulation of the road.

CONTROL SYSTEM (for UCF20)

Pneumatic Cylinder With Shock Absorber

The pneumatic cylinder has basically the same construction and operation as the previous model.
However, the following changes have been made for the UCF20.
• The previously separate main-air chamber and sub -air chamber have been integrated into a single air
chamber. Also, as a result of the increased compressed air capacity through the larger size of the air
chamber, the UCF20 offers improved riding comfort.
• The rebound spring provided inside each of the 4 shock absorbers restrains the movement of the inner
wheels as they tend to lift during cornering, and of the rear wheels as they tend to lift during braking.
Under normal driving conditions, the clearance provided in each shock absorber prevents the rebound
spring from operating and allows only the soft ride of the air spring.
• The rebound springs suppress the vehicle height variation when the vehicle height becomes extra high
due to a change in the weight of passengers and luggage after the ignition switch is turned off.

Shock absorber
The basic construction and operation of the
shock absorber for the UCF20 are the same as in
the previous model. However, the damping
Air chamber force range is wider than the previous model. In
addition, the oil passage shape of the rotary
valve has been changed, so the damping opera-
tion has been changed from 3 steps type to a
continuously variable type.

CONTROL
Damping force and vehicle height control performed by t he Suspension ECU are basically the same as in
the previous models.
A semi-active control, which forms the basis of the damping force control function, has been newly
adopted. Besides using this control, various corrective actions such as the "anti-roll", "anti-dive", "anti-
squat", and "high speed" control functions are provided as on the previous model. The "ignition switch
OFF control" function of the vehicle height control has been discontinued.

sors and height control sensors so that it can Basic Mechanism
output signals to provide optimal damping force
to the suspension control actuator. The basic
mechanism of the suspension consists of the
spring and shock absorber illustrated in the
drawing on the right.

CD Starting uphill(1 st stage)

When the wheel starts to ascend a bump, caus- } ~_ Body movement
ing the shock absorber to contract and the body Damping force (Softer)

to move upward, the damping force of the shock

absorber is reduced so that the shock absorber's
resistance does not push the body upward.

CONTRO L SYSTEM (for UCF20)

@ Ascending(2nd stage)
When the wheel continues to ascend the bump,
the force of the spring attempts to push the body 'A---~f- Body movement
Damping force (Firmer)
upward causing the shack absorber to elongate
gradually. Therefore, the damping force of the
shock absorber is increased to restrain the ,---r---IUlongation
body's upward movement.

® Starting Downhill(3rd stage)

When the wheel starts to descend the bump,
causing the shock absorber to elongate and the
body move to downward, the damping force of
the shock absorber is reduced so that the sus -
pension is lowered smoothly.

@ Descending(4th stage)
When the wheel descends further, causing the

shock absorber to contract gradually, the damp-

ing force of the shock absorber is increased to
restrain the body's downward movement.
'"----__---' U c ontraction

Thus, through commands from the Suspension

ECU, the semi -active control function regulates
the damping force of the shock absorbers of all
four wheels.
In this way, optimal damping force control is
realized for all four wheels independently, even
on an undulating road surface.
