CUSTOMER CHALLENGES
MONITORING TUBES INSIDE YOUR PRODUCTION PROCESSES

Tubes used in industry processes are constantly exposed

to a number of challenges related to:
• Temperature
• Strain
• Vibration
How do you know when the tubes have reached the limit
of what they can handle?
Or – if you can actually increase the temperature, strain or
vibration to boost productivity?

9
TEMPERATURE AND SAFETY
A boiler has accidentally been run without
sufficient cooling water. There is a risk that the
material has been overheated.

Is it safe to continue the operations?

10
TEMPERATURE AND THERMAL STRAIN
A heat exchanger is run intermittently and
with large variations in temperature. As a
result, the tubes are subjected to thermal
strain cycling.

When is it necessary to replace the tubes?

11
MEASURING AND MONITORING
CHALLENGES

• External sensors

• will not survive in applications such as boilers and heat

exchangers with fluids, steam or gases on both sides of
the tube walls.
• will affect efficient cleaning

12
SANDVIK SENTUSYS™
MATERIAL MONITORING SYSTEM

By integrating sensors and cables into the tube, Sandvik

created a new solution.
• Sensors and cables are fully protected inside the tube wall
• Layer solution: load carrying tube (certification unaffected),
electronics layer and outer shield. Total addition of ~2 mm to
the total wall thickness.
• Can be made with most alloys and in sizes from outer
diameters of 15 to 110 mm, and lengths up to 15 meters.

Cables connected to signal

processing and connectivity device.

BOMHUS ENERGI AB - SWEDEN

• 150 MW bubbling fluid bed boiler

• Installation in primary air pre-heater
• <250 degrees Celsius
• Low pressures
• Air inside the tube
• Flue gas outside the tube
• Measure temperature on tube wall
• Avoid temp below dew-point
• Cost efficiency reasons
• One meter of tube was cut out and replaced by a Sentusys™ sensor tube
