The Miracle of Water
Water is unique because it can absorb
large amounts of heat without
significant changes in its temperature.
In fact, its ability to absorb heat is about
ten times as great as steel. During the
day, the Earth’s bodies of water quickly
soak up a lot of heat, so the Earth stays
fairly cool. At night, the Earth's waters
release the huge amounts of heat that
they have absorbed during the day.
This, combined with atmospheric
effects, keeps most of the Earth's
surface from freezing at night.
If it were not for the large quantity of
water on the Earth, the difference
between day and night temperatures
would be far greater. Many parts of the
land surface would be hot enough to
boil water during the day, and cold
enough to freeze water at night. As
water keeps temperatures stable, the
large bodies of water on Earth are vital
for life.
The environmental cost of the massive
consumption and manufacture of bottled water has
led some U.S. and Canadian local governments to
consider a ban on its sale. While this seems an
extreme response, the following facts may surprise
you.
Fact #1. Bottles used to package water take over
1,000 years to biodegrade and if burnt, they
produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80%
of all water bottles used in the U.S. simply become
“litter”.
Fact #2. Recycling is only feasible in limited
circumstances because only PET bottles can be
recycled. All other bottles are discarded, only 1 in
5 bottles are sent to the recycle bin.
Fact #3. U.S. landfills are filled with 2 million
tons of discarded water bottles alone.
Fact #4. It takes over 1.5 million barrels of oil
per year to meet the demands of U.S. water bottle
manufacturing. This amount of oil far exceeds the
amount needed to power 100,000 homes for a year,
and does not include the oil needed to transport the
final product to market.
Fact #5. It is estimated that 3 liters of water are
used to package 1 liter of bottled water.

HOMEWORK
In the early 1800s, few American children went to school. [A] Consequently, doing homework was not
really part of the average child’s life. It wasn’t until the end of the 1800s that attending school became
mandatory in most states. [B] Even then school was viewed simply as a place where children learnt to read
and write. However, the new teachers that were employed in the educational system began teaching more
challenging material. In the early 1900s, homework in the higher grades became more frequent, and even
became a part of elementary school education.
In the 1950s, Americans worried that education did not prepare high-school children for new technologies,
such as electronics. It was thought that homework accelerated learning so teachers began placing more and
more emphasis on it. [C] However, the carefree way of thinking of the 1960s brought a decrease in the amount
of homework as it was believed to increase isolation and harm social experiences. [D] This lasted for two
decades until the 1980s. Since then, homework has been regarded as the best way to help students
practice the skills and increase the knowledge they learn at school.
One of the biggest challenges facing teachers today is how much homework to give. Doing homework can
be a stressful part of the afternoon for students. While homework should be challenging, it should not
create stress or anxiety. If your afternoons are filled with stress over homework, here are some tips to reduce
the pressure.
• Don’t do your homework when your TV, computer or cell phone are on. These will prevent you from
concentrating on the material you are studying. Studies indicate that if such electronic devices are on while
students are doing their homework, it takes longer, and the results are less satisfactory.
• Set aside a specific homework time. Remember, your needs and the length of time you set aside
usually increase as you advance into the higher grades. If you finish early, use the remaining time to study for
an upcoming test or read a book. And remember that most people cannot complete a task without taking a
break, so try breaking the homework up and doing some of it right after school and the rest at a separate time.
• Don’t get behind. You may not be able to catch up once you start to fall behind. Often the material in
the following class will depend on your having done the homework, so it is important to do the homework
before the next class.
With some types of homework, collaborating with another student can be an effective way to get things
done and increase understanding. Of course, this does not mean that each of you only does some of the work.

Instead, it means discussing the material and perhaps checking each other’s work. However, you should ask
your teacher first because some teachers may want you to work alone.
