Work Experience
Education and working career combined, I have in the region of 25 years experience in academia
and industry.
Academia:
I have over 2 years experience in lecturing on a part time basis and 1 year lecturing on a full time
basis in GMIT where I have been involved in the delivery of numerous modules across several
programmes in the Building and Civil Engineering Department, which cover topics such as
measurement, estimating, tendering procedures, contracts, cost management, CWMF, health and
safety, site management, BIM MEP, work placement supervision, dissertation supervision, etc.
• Teaching various modules in accordance with learning outcomes, teaching and learning
strategies and syllabus outlined by GMIT.
• Providing academic input into modules.
• Preparation of learning material for modules such as lecture notes, power-point
presentations and case studies to deliver in class.
• Preparation of assessment activities such as setting exams, projects and continuous
assessments including brief, description of required works and marking breakdown.
• Assessing, correcting and grading of submitted materials such as exams, projects and
continuous assessments.
• Invigilate inclass exams.
• Managing students by monitoring, evaluating and providing guidance and feedback to
student for submitted work to help them strengthen their skills and knowledge base.

Industry:
I have in the region of over 20 years experience working in the building services industry,
covering a range of sectors, including healthcare, leisure and hospitality, education, commercial,
residential and industrial. I have a strong working knowledge of the built environment especially
all related M&E disciplines, sustainability, energy usage and energy efficiency of systems, modern
construction methods, standard building construction, project management, cost planning and
control, health and safety throughout all project phases and stages.
In the course of my working career as a building services consulting engineer, I have been
involved in the design/management/finance of the following M&E services/systems;
• Electrical systems such as lighting and emergency lighting systems, power distribution,
main distribution boards/centres, fire alarm systems, protective services, security services,
communication systems, load studies for utility companies, plant sizing & selection,
energy usage, projected energy costs, financial costs.
Experience Includes:
• Completing and issuing mechanical, electrical, sprinkler, lift tender packages (drawings,
specifications, schedules, pricing documents, instructions, invitations, etc.).
• Agreeing client briefs and fee structure.
• Review and input into appointment documents.
• Liaising and communicating with design teams and clients on M&E items such as report
on cost, design options, risk, job status.
• Liaising, monitoring and communicating with internal staff.
• Advising and agreeing M&E tender lists with client/design team.
• M&E costs and financial management – completing budgets, cost plans, tender appraisals,
tender error identification, reporting, negotiating with contractors, interim payments,
claims, variations/change orders, final accounts, life cycle costs, value engineering.
• Reporting of all M&E costs and financial items as listed above.
• Benchmarking M&E project costs against other cost data sources.
• Assisting M&E contractors with tender bid proposals, prelims, interim payments,
variations, final accounts.
• Assessing suitability for M&E contractors and specialists, in financial strength, technical
ability.
• Updating in-house M&E cost data files.
• Liaising with utility companies, obtaining and negotiating capital contribution costs on
behalf of client with utility companies – (ESBN, Bord Gais, Eircom/Eir and Water
Boards/Local Authorities/Irish Water).
• Attending meetings – client, design team, site, construction, specialist/sub-contractor
meetings.
• Ensuring that all relevant M&E open items are actioned promptly and efficiently.
• Chairing internal project and company meetings and issuing meeting minutes.
• Chairing meeting with M&E contractors, specialists, suppliers.
• Taking notes at meetings and reporting to director and distribution of meeting notes to
relevant colleagues.
• Ensuring regulatory and statutory compliance for M&E services design.
• Ensuring M&E services design compliance with budgets / cost plans.
• Ensuring M&E services design compliance with client brief.
• Liaising with M&E supply chain members such as contractors, specialists, suppliers,
manufacturers.
• Completing energy usage, projected energy costs calculations, life cycle analysis and costs
for M&E services.
• Assisting in provisional building energy ratings and ensuring Part L compliance.
• Advising clients on the selection and cost impact of renewable energy systems such as
solar panels, heat-pumps, heat recovery units, etc.
• Carrying out site inspections of work in progress M&E installations and issuing progress
and cost reports.
• Carrying out conditional surveys of M&E services and issuing associated technical & cost
reports.
• Reviewing and commenting on contractor’s drawings and technical submittals for M&E
services (plant, equipment, materials).
• Completing project M&E H&S design risk assessments / registers.
• Ensuring staff are aware of H&S obligations at work and at other places of work (sites).
• Review and comment on contractor’s M&E risk assessments and method statements.
• Providing risk management advice for M&E services.
• Ensuring continuous update of company library – design guides, statutory regulations,
codes of practice, cost data.
• Ensuring office procedure and policy is followed and maintained.
• Ensuring that no conflict of interest exist for staff.
• Ensuring confidentially is maintained of all company, project, client information.
• Management of engineering staff and company resources - defining the appropriate
company and resource requirements to deliver projects, scheduling of staff for projects.
• Monitoring the office environment for potential staff issues and addressing as appropriate.
• Interviewing potential new staff candidates.
• Co-ordination and validation of project plans (detailing tasks, milestones, resources and
costs).

consisting of new office space, new product production area, new R&D laboratory, upgrade to
existing air-conditioning/ventilation systems across numerous buildings. Project Status - Ongoing.
Primary Care Medical Centre, Mohill. M&E Services Value - €0.55million (budget).
Main Contractor – TBC, Architect – F. Cooney & Associates. M&E services to new PCMC with
surface carparking. Project Status - Still at pre-tender stage.
