Zero Conditional
If + Present Simple, Present Simple
We use the zero conditional to talk about things that always happen in certain conditions. The main action is an
automatic result of the if-clause. (We can sometimes use when instead of if.)
Rewrite each pair of sentences to make one sentence with the zero conditional.

Superstitions
1- Read the article about the origin of two superstitions and write True or False. Justify the false
answers.
The ancient Egyptians loved all cats, and it was there that the belief began that a black cat crossing your
path brings good luck. This positive reputation was different in Europe in the early seventeenth century in
England. King Charles I had a black cat as a pet. When the cat died, King Charles lamented that his luck
was gone. The day after the cat’s death he was arrested and charged with high treason.
During the Middle Ages, in many other parts of Europe people thought black cats were the "familiars," or
companions, of witches, or even witches themselves in disguise, and that a black cat crossing your path
was an indication of bad luck, a sign that the devil was watching you. This was a strong belief held by the
Pilgrims when they came to America, perhaps explaining the strong association between black cats and
witchcraft that exists in the country to this day.

False cognates are words that are spelled and sound similarly in two languages, but do not
have the same meaning. For example, a native Spanish speaker may read the English word
"embarrassed" and draw an association to the Spanish word "embarazada," which
translates to "pregnant" in English. False cognates are harder to grasp for many non-
English speakers. Some examples are:

It can be very difficult to make decisions. Changing your job is a big decision. Your job
gives you money. It takes most of your time. Perhaps you have friends at work, too.
Many people stay in jobs they don´t like because they are afraid to leave.
So when is it time to change jobs? How do you know when you should quit? Well, ask
yourself these questions:
Am I tired of working long hours? Does every day seem to be full of problems? Do I
feel under pressure all the time?

In 2000, the U.S. TV company Fox had a similar idea. They brought fifty
women from around the world to Las Vegas. They took part in a new game
show, for “the biggest prize of all”—a millionaire husband. The show was very
popular. Twenty-two million people watched. The winner was Darva Conger, A
thirty-four-year-old nurse. Her millionaire husband was businessman Rick

Many job advertisements ask you to send a résumé. Your résumé is very important. A good
résumé can help you get an interview. Here are some things to include:
Introduction—Say a little about who you are and why you want the job.
Make the résumé match the job—do not use the same résumé for every job you
apply for. Change your résumé according to the job.
Personal details—you should give your full name, address, and contact details.
Education—List the places you studied and your qualifications
Personal Interest—this is your chance to show your personality. Write about
something that interests you. Mention your hobbies and other free-time activities.
Work experience—List your present and past jobs. Say a little more about the ones
that are connected to the job you are applying for.
Referees—these are the people who support your application for the job, perhaps
your current employer, a teacher, or someone who knows you well. Always ask first
before you name anyone as a referee on your résumé.
Remember—Keep it short! Never use more than two pages. Also, make sure your

Gestures
Gestures are ways we use our body to communicate. Gestures help us communicate without
speaking. However, the meaning of the
gestures we use can be very different in
different parts of the world. For example, in
most parts of the world, to say “Yes,” people
move their head up and down. However, in
Greece, people move their head up and
down to say “No!” how do you say “OK”
without speaking? Americans will make a circle with the thumb and forefinger of one hand.
However, in Singapore, Russia and some South American countries, this gesture is very
rude. In France, it means “worthless,” and in China it means “money.” It seems we can still
have problems speaking, even when we don’t open our mouths!
