 The Remarkable
Teddie-Joy Remhild
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was
saddened to discover that Teddie-Joy
Remhild passed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
motivational speaker for the disability
community. She had a contagious
enthusiasm, positive outlook on life,
and profound determination in
advocating on behalf of individuals
with disabilities. With her superb
communication and needs
assessment skills, she effectively
addressed the concerns of and
resource deprivation in the disability
community. Her name appeared
frequently in numerous records of
disability commission meetings and
disability rights publications. For more
information about Mrs. Remhild and

Council of the Blind.
Teddie-Joy served more than 40 years in the
disability advocacy field. She will be deeply
missed. We thank her for being such a terrific
mentor, compassionate soul, and extraordinary
human being.

*STELLAR: #SweetSophia
The AADQ family expresses its profound
sadness with the passing of
#SweetSophia on May 23, 2019. This
beautiful young lady with a contagiously
warm and vibrant spirit, touched our
hearts and left an undeniably positive
impact on the world. Sophia lived with
"facial, hand and foot deformities, and
numerous disabilities." Given challenges
with the soaring cost of health care and
insurance coverage for life-sustaining
treatments, Sophia's mother, Natalie
Weaver, became an advocate for her
child and other children with complex
medical conditions. She established the
nonprofit organization, Sophia's Voice, in
her daughter's honor.
The organization "helps people with
chronic illness and disabilities get various
medical needs met by providing medical
equipment (not covered by insurance),
help with financial difficulties, medical
debt, and various other hardships" with a
"focus on supporting caregivers, disability
activists, people with chronic illness/
disabilities by providing support, respite,
and gifts that bring joy."
They "also offer resources to individual
advocates to help them find their voice
and participate in advocacy. We focus
on advocates for disability rights,
healthcare, and those that wish to
educate & raise awareness to encourage
inclusion and acceptance."
Sophia Voice's "mission is to normalize facial
differences and profound disabilities." They
"believe unconditional love, respect and
support can create a more accepting, kind
and inclusive world."

#AccessibleSummer in NYC Parks
NYC Parks provides free, accessible
recreational space and activities for the
summer! Please see calendar NYC Parks
website for accessible events. NYC Parks
accessible spaces include the following
(verbatim descriptions and specifications
from NYC Parks website for accuracy).
Adaptive Hubs are fully accessible
recreation centers that lead their borough
in offering programs for New Yorkers with
disabilities. These hubs will also be a center
of information, where patrons can go to get
more information on what NYC Parks offers
citywide for patrons with disabilities.
Accessible basketball courts have
entrances are level with the pavement or
have ramp access to courts. Gates that
lead into these courts are 32 inches wide or
more.
Accessible bathrooms have a 5 foot turning
radius, as well as grab bars. All amenities
are placed at a height appropriate to
people in wheelchairs.
Accessible beaches have fully ADA
compliant ramps that lead from the street
onto the boardwalk and from the
boardwalk onto the sand. The sand can be
accessed using Parks' mobi-mats.
The Carousel for All Children contains an
ADA-compliant ramp to allow wheelchair
users to board and ride the carousel.
Gardens that are considered accessible
contain a wide, paved route into the
garden, as well as elevated planting tables
and accessible picnic benches.

Hiking trails with full accessibility meet all of
the USDA's accessibility guidelines for trails
and greenways. Hiking trails with limited
accessibility have some access and might
contain steps, uneven terrain and steep
gradient. Read more about what
accessible trails are in the USDA Forest
Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines.
There are four types of accessible
playgrounds. Level 1 playgrounds are
“Playgrounds for All Children.” Level 2
playgrounds have ramped play equipment
and universally accessible swings. Level 3
playgrounds have universally accessible
swings, and Level 4 playgrounds have
transfer platforms and ground level play
features.
Accessible pools have a lift or ramp system
into the pool.
Accessible recreation centers have
wheelchair accessible entrances in the
front, as well as access to every floor and
have amenities such as gym equipment,
computer room, and bathrooms that are
accessible to people with disabilities.
Limited accessibility recreation centers
have wheelchair accessible entrances in
the back or sides of the facility, an
assortment of ramp systems to get to
various floors, and have amenities such as
gym equipment, computer room, and
bathrooms that are accessible to people
with disabilities.
Accessible sports fields are striped
specifically for wheelchair softball and
football.
Accessible tennis courts have entrances
level with the pavement or have ramp
access to courts. Gates that lead into these
courts are 32" wide or more.

Digital Literacy
What is digital literacy? How can one
acquire it? When do we need it? Digital
literacy is the ability to understand/use
digital devices and interpret digital
content.
Digital literacy is required on a daily basis
for tasks such as communication, work
related activities, school assignments,
shopping, travel, recreation. Digital literacy
can fill a communication gap for individuals
with physical challenges speaking or
articulating words.
Digitability provides specialized training/
lessons to help adolescents develop
their digital literacy, life and work-ready
skills. They have different modules:
understanding the Internet, safety, daily
activities, education, professional
development, and financial literacy.
UCLA, a Pathway of Study for Students with
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
UCLA Extension offers a variety of courses for
adults with diverse interests. This includes
Pathway, a specialized curriculum for students
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. "Pathway at UCLA Extension is a
two-year certificate program for students with
intellectual and other developmental
disabilities, offering a blend of educational,
social, and vocational experiences, taught
and supervised by experienced

instructors sensitive to the individual needs of
our students. On campus, Pathway students
attend classes and participate with UCLA
students in the many social, recreational, and
cultural activities of a major university."

Programs like Project GET SAFE in hospitals,
schools, day treatment programs, and
residential facilities help reduce safety risks
and protect the vulnerable segment of our
population. This includes individuals with
disabilities, children, and seniors. Please visit

Common shortage of manpower in hospitals,
residential facilities, and day treatment
programs can lead to insufficient monitoring
during moments that are critical to personal
safety. Furthermore, individuals with disabilities
have challenges reporting abuse, neglect, or
danger. Assistive technology is a safeguard
and can be ubiquitous when humans are not.
