Immigration Presentation Script

i. Introduction:
- Since the 19 century many immigrants have come, in search for the “American
Dream” escaping crop failure, rising taxes, and famine. To many people the
American dream is an idea in which everyone has the ability to grow in the
economy, provide social mobility for their family, and be able to live without the
barriers of society. In today's society, this dream has been hindered
tremendously, due to the fact with recent issues over the idea of immigration.
- Although some may argue that immigrants come to take away jobs from native
born Americans, this is not accurate because they take over jobs that are
considered too challenging for native whites, there are plenty of available jobs for
everyone.

ii. Claim 1:
- Trump has vowed to increase border patrol agents to “secure” the American
Border. This is when some start to argue that these agents will protect against
“job stealing” immigrants.
- Contrary to these peoples beliefs, immigrants that come to America don’t take
jobs. For example, they simply fill in the jobs that native whites don’t want which
are the backbreaking or “unskilled” ones. (go over the picture with the kind of
job percentages that immigrants fill in)
- This however does not go for all immigrants-there are some that are highly
skilled and when they come here they are able to go up the chain, which might
create hysteria for some people. (go over the percentage of educated
immigrants ) However, if America really is the land of opportunity to grow and
prosper, shouldn’t there be plenty of jobs available for everyone.

iii. Claim 2:
- The idea that immigrants have come to take jobs, has been put into the mind of
Americans. But how accurate is this claim?
- According to the MPI the U.S Population of Immigrants (naturalized citizens,
permanent residents, and persons illegally residing) was around 44 M in 2017.
(Go over the graph). We do not project a much incline in immigration by 2020
due to President Trump wanting to enforce more laws regarding immigration
which does not make it easier for people to immigrate to the U.S.
- With this being said by 2020 the U.S economy is expected to create 55 million
job openings: 24 Mil due to new jobs and 31 due to baby boom retirement.( Go
over PIE chart regarding the new jobs) This is way more than the amount of
able working immigrants residing in the U.S, and most of these new jobs will
require some kind of degree higher that High School which not all immigrants
possess (Go over the second PIE CHART).
- With all this statistical information presented, counteracting the idea that
immigrants steal jobs, would the actual source of this problem originate on
emotions rather than facts?

iv. Claim 3:
- We all know that these harsh claims toward immigrants have to originate some
place in the heart, rather than with evidence. Sergio Reyes and two other
Mexican Immigrants( Picture of the 3 Men) were both busy landscaping, where
out of nowhere they were accosted by some man who was spluttering racial
names at them, to the extent when he even threatened to cut off one of their
heads.
- “It doesn’t matter if I become an American Citizen. If your skin color is not white
and your English is not perfect, you don’t blend. Bottom line,” Reyes
claimed-which is a prominent cause that not only revolves on this verbal hate
incidents, but also assaults, robberies, and murders.
- With this being said it is a very high possibility that “immigrants come to steel
jobs” originated from these racially biased people, who believe that native born
Americans are superior over Immigrants.
- To an extent we can shunn these views with evidence, but it is worth noting that
their will always be people trying to deprive a certain race, religion, or ethnicity
with claims that turn out not to be accurate. However, anyone who comes across
these claims will not search up if they’re indeed accurate. Instead one will
assume that they are and build this whole biased argument with it, and we can
see the problem that this creates.

v. Counterclaim:
- Although immigrants have been coming in America to look for jobs in order to
make a living, statistics show that immigrants do not necessarily take the majority
of jobs than American citizens do, along with the aid of technology.
- Technology has been evolving over the years proving itself to be able to
complete tasks efficiently more then humans can, because of this, it has been a
new source of why jobs are being taken.
- “According to our estimates, one more robot per thousand workers reduces the
employment to population ratio by about 0.18-0.34 percentage points and wages
by 0.25-0.5 percent” -Daron Acemoglu, explains statistics of how robots are
causing negative effects to the employment population, and our attention should
be wary of robots more than immigrants’
vi. Call to action:
- fixing immigration is not about mass deportations of people but about creating a
legal visa system for jobs Americans do not want.
- By creating these legal visa systems immigrants would be following the same
processes as american citizens so they aren’t “stealing” jobs.
- By following the proper process to getting jobs, everyone will have the same
opportunity.
- One can conclude that focusing more on how to compromise the issue is more
important than deporting immigrants because in reality they are not here to steal
jobs; instead their here for economic growth to be able to provide for their family,
where in their home country they could not.
