periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important
therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia Catalogue
of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australian Standard’, which
subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editions and amendments, and of
withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia, are
welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made without
delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Shipbuilding. This committee
was constituted in 1967 by shipbuilding interests under the sponsorship of the Australian
Shipbuilding Board, now the Shipbuilding Division of the Department of Shipping and
Transport.
In the preparation of the standard, reference has been made to relevant British standards, in
particular BS MA1 Part 2, and to documents issued by the International Organization for
Standardization. In particular ISO Recommendation R644, Graphical Symbols to be Used in
Schemes for the Installation of Ventilation Systems in Ships, has been drawn on extensively.
The Association has also published AS F5, Graphical Symbols for Pipeline Systems in Ships,
and some common symbols used in ventilation systems have been used in this standard. A
number of additional symbols have been included following representation from
manufacturers and users.
Users of this standard should also note that in addition to observing the requirements of the
standard, they should at the same time ensure compliance with such statutory and
classification society requirements, rules and regulations as may be applicable to the
individual ship concerned.
