MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Minstrels Rhythm of Hope, Inc., it gives me a great pleasure
to acknowledge and thank the individuals who have greatly contributed to the accomplishments of
the organization this year.

I wish to acknowledge the support of my co-board members as their dedication as members of the
Board of Trustees plays a key role in the organization's overall performance. Each board members'
assistance to review, assess and oversee the programs and activities of the foundation has significantly
helped the Management Team to complete an efficient year with the projects undertaken locally and
abroad.

My thanks also go out to the members of the MRHI's Management Team for their continued strong
leadership and for their willingness to go the extra mile and work cooperatively with the Board of
Trustees to address topics affecting the future of the organization in line with our vision and mission.
Each member's perseverance, enthusiasm and constant hard work is much appreciated.

I would also like to thank our global community of sponsors for their generosity and dedication to
help the organization and we are confident that they will continue to support us in many years to
come as we make real difference in our society.

Here in MRHI, we also take pleasure in the pride of having left 2017 behind as a productive and
successful year. While leaving our eleventh year behind, we continued to grow in all programs that
we operate as we have been constantly delivering better service and better results each year.

On the other hand, we are truly proud to note that the organization’s registration and license to
operate was awarded last year by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). I
am very pleased to have the opportunity to emphasize the special role of Mr. Alain Pronovost, being
the Founder of the organization as he played an important position in the success of our institution as
we reach closer to our goal of acquiring more accreditations and certifications domestically and
internationally.

The optimistic results delivered during 2017 make me confident that we are consistently headed in
the right direction. MRHI's continuing strength is fully demonstrated by the commitment and
dedication of the many faction the organization has and our results were a source of remarkable
pride for the MRHI Board of Trustees and all members. Indeed, they are a testament to our
foundation's longstanding commitment to our clients and beneficiaries.

ABIGAIL V. AMPARO
President, MRHI Board of Trustees

This year has committed a huge amount of work, research, and dedication. Still,
implementation would not have been possible if we did not have the support of many
individuals and organizations. Therefore, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude
and to express our appreciation to those who have helped us.

We are thankful to Le Monde Roncalli, Congregation De Notre Dame

and Lloyd George Foundation for their financial and logistical support and for the

and program implementation.

We are grateful as well to the Program Coordinator, the

Management Team, to our Instructional and Assistant Managers and to our
diligent Volunteers and Scholars for providing of their technical support and actual
work in administering their duties and responsibilities. Without their superior knowledge
and experience, the quality of our program and activities wouldn’t be much better, and
thus their support has been truly essential.

To our respective Board of Trustees, for their complete support and guidance
to the staff and volunteers, for sharing their expertise for the betterment of our program
and activities.

To Mr. and Mrs. Salamon, who treated us as a family, we truthfully appreciate

your boundless kindness, guidance, and support. Thank you for the wisdom and

Also, we give thanks and praises to our God Almighty for showering us with
blessings throughout the year, allowing us to extend such wonderful blessings to those
who are in need and to inspire others to do the same. We are thankful that He has given
us the power to believe in our talents and to pursue our dreams. We could have never
done everything without the faith we have in Him.

Most importantly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and highest
appreciation to Mr. Alain Pronovost whose dedication, patience, understanding, trust,
passion and love to each and every one of us in the organization made us achieve our

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Every achievement each year is truly a blessing to the organization. It is of great

accomplishment for the organization to be registered and licensed to operate with the
Department of Social Welfare and Development. As we continue our mission on sharing
our best with the least, let us look back to the accomplishments of the previous year. At
the beginning of the year, the Minstrels of Hope were able to perform at Casa San
Miguel, featured at their Sunday’s Best event. The group also had their third tour in
Europe between the month of April and June. The Theater Arts had once again shown
their natural talents in acting through their second major play entitled “Mabangis na
Lungsod” from the works of Dr. Efren Abueg, which was written and directed by Mr.
Bryan Murcia.

Our educational program continues to be a successful endeavor as we gain new

scholars from the primary education up to Senior High students, who prove to be doing
well in their respective fields. We continue to support and prioritize learning and well-
being, as these will help beneficiaries face the reality and hardship of life after school.

Just like every year, the organization held routine programs and recreational
activities specifically planned to benefit our beneficiaries. Socialization, summer camp,
film viewing, medical mission and gift-giving, and more were held for all the participants
to enjoy and at the same time uplift their well-being. For the first time, we have
conducted a recollection for the clients, which aims to improve personal relations of the
clients among themselves, and to God.

Our work will never be complete without the unlimited support and assistance of
our donors who continuously and tirelessly share their blessings with those we aim to
help. We always thank them sincerely, from the heart and may God continue to bless
them as they have been to ours.

annual report 2017 – major programs
This year has been a huge lot of work to the MRHI as we continue to promote
Skills Development through implementation of the Arts and Crafts;
Children’s Choir; Theater Arts and the Minstrels of Hope programs,
all of which aimed to enhance the potential of our beneficiaries to the fullest.
Values Formation has continued its objective on developing the personality
and moral values of the beneficiaries across all programs.
A. VALUES FORMATION

We continue to uphold our principle of shaping each

participant’s character and attitude to lead as a good example
to others especially at home with their families and in their
environment. Topics that are being discussed during activities
were suggested by the beneficiaries as we want to engage
them on matters and concepts they want to know or learn
more about.

In providing educational and recreational approach on

learning good moral and values which are vital to boost
someone's personal character, we maintain on showing
different types of app ealing methods to the clients such as
story-telling, educational games, film-viewing, drawing and
role-playing conducted by our facilitators. To have the clients
focus not only to the topic that is being discussed but also to
the core value why we teach them those topics.
.
• Among the stories that they were able to watch,
listen to and learn from: The Photographic Elephant,
Doraemon and Disney’s Mulan and Moana.
• They also had short plays and writing of short stories which portrayed the
following topics-Worthiness, Time Management, Honor and Discipline;
• In partnership with the Knights of Columbus, we have invited a guest for a
whole month of discussion on the following topics;
1. How to pray the holy rosary
2. The story of Adam and Eve
14 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
3. Aral-Dasal para sa Kabataan
4. The Doctrine of Trinity
• They watched short inspirational movies
whenever they discuss their topics.
• Their major event was in October when
they had their first ever whole day Recollection, headed
by Mr. Anthony Atun from Knights of Columbus.
Participants were encouraged to express and share their
feelings and current situation through group dynamics.

Aside from this, we conducted different kinds of activities such as doing craft works
on special occasions like Valentine's and Christmas Party which improved their creativity
skills by

B. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The organization has four major programs under this category which is designed to
enhance talents and inner skills that just need proper support and training. These are Arts
and Crafts, Children’s Choir, Theatre Arts and the Minstrels of Hope.
i. Arts and Crafts

Arts and Crafts serves as an outlet to the clients to

be more artistic, to develop a healthy leisure and most
importantly, for them to feel good while they are
creating fine arts, as it boosts their self-confidence.
And clients who feel able to experiment and to make
mistakes feel free to invent new
ways of thinking, which extends
well beyond the craft room.

We have always continued

working and developing the
participant’s talents and
craftsmanship through several
projects, which also intended to widen their skills and for them also
to have a source of livelihood. This year, most of the clients were
able to receive money from the post cards and picture frames they
made that was sold out to sponsors.
15 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
• Picture Frame Project
• PASINAYA 2017: Upcycling Workshop at
CCP and Luneta Park

ii. Children’s Choir

This year has been very fruitful for the

choir, as they continue to learn, sing and
produce excellent harmony with the
leadership of their new conductor, Mr.
Patrick Frias.

• The choir watched various choral

groups, among them were the
Mapua Cardinal Singers, CEU
Singers and Kammerchor Manila.
These activity sparks eagerness
within the members to practice
and hone their talents.

• The children, together with the Minstrels of Hope, Chorus Vocales and Los Cantates

• The choir had performances during the
Christmas season at venues such as the
Century Park Hotel, ELKS Club,
Manila Polo Club, NYK Shipping
Lines, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and
at The Manila Hotel for the first time.

• They were able to accumulate funds to

support their educational expenses.
iii. Theatre Arts

In many forms, theater was and still an effective

medium to encourage social understanding, as a
means of entertainment and a liberal way to
express one’s opinion. Indeed, these play an
important key role in learning, discovery, and
development of skills both in academic and life
success.

• PASINAYA 2017: They

participated in different activities like Theatre
Production Workshop, Shadow Play and Singing
Workshop.

• They undergo the Dramatic Theatre

Arts Workshop –wherein they learned how to
interpret ‘baybayin’ language through dancing.

• Basic Acting Workshop with Mr.

Bryan Murcia.

• The group showcased their

remarkable talents through a Theater Show,

17 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
na Lungsod", written and directed by Mr. Bryan Murcia last September 30,
2017. Invited guests and visitors, including the parents of the participants did
enjoyed the show and had fun watching the children acts naturally on stage.

iv. Minstrels of Hope

It is indeed another blissful year of giving

hope for the Minstrels of Hope. All
throughout the years, these ladies continue
to share their talents and skills for the
benefit of the children and youth. They sing
to inspire, they impart their knowledges in
music and arts to give back, they share their
best to give hope.

The choir had several opportunities to

perform, not only to share their music, but
also to inspire and awe the audiences with
their stories.

• The Minstrels of Hope, under the

direction of Mr. Anthony Villanueva, have once again graced the stage at Casa San
Miguel in Zambales last January 22, 2017, performing mostly Tagalog songs at the
Backstage Cafe.

• Recording of a CD Album, which consists of Filipino Music for the European Tour
2017.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 – EDUCATIONAL
Aside from the primary educational program that our beneficiaries acquire from
school, the organization also provides further help to meet their learning needs. These are
the Remedial Classes, Educational Assistance and the Balik-Eskwela program. These
programs help us determine the learning progress of each participant in all stages of their
formal education. These also help the beneficiaries and their parents decide on which
topic to focus or give more attention to, for the continuous growth of the student.

A. REMEDIAL CLASSES

Remedial Class provides opportunities

for children who have learning difficulties to
undergo proper assistance and supervision
to help them pass their respective levels.
We aim to enhance knowledge in basic
reading, writing and arithmetic. These
activities are focused on nearby schools in
Paco (Silahis ng Katarungan) and in
Pandacan (Beata Elementary School). Our
main goal is to facilitate learners’ progress
and development and for them to be
endorsed to the next grade level.
Currently we have a total of 50 students
from both school; 45 are Grade 1 students,
and 5 students from Grade 2.
Even though activities are mainly school-
based, we also bring the children to our
center for special events such as
Socialization, Film Viewing, Balik-Eskwela,
Children’s Month and Christmas Party.
Children from both schools, also had summer classes between the month of April and
May with their facilitators to further guide them with their reading, writing and
arithmetic skills.

20 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
B. EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE

This program continuously supports selected

scholars with financial help as well as tutorials, group
studies, to seminars and workshops that can be of big
help on enhancing their skills, abilities and
knowledge. As an additional assistance to their needs,
we let scholars use computers in our office to their
research and school paper works.

There were 19 scholars for this year; 5 elementary

students, 6 high school students, 2 senior high school
students and 6 college students

Our notable graduate for this year is Ms. Donna

Sarah L. Rabino who graduated last March 2017
with a bachelor's degree in Psychology at The
National Teachers College. We would like to
thank most especially Emilien Dupuis and
Isabelle Mougeot together with their relatives
and friends who supported our scholar all
throughout her study.

This program also encourages its own scholars

and others on giving back and helping others to
the community through volunteering and
rendering of services. This aimed to nurture
their sense of responsibility not only to
themselves but also to other people. By sharing
the knowledge and skills they have gained both
in school and in the organization, they were able
to help. This also allows them to meet new
people from all walks of life.

21 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
When the Instructional Managers who were part of the European Tour went abroad. The
Program Coordinator, together with the remaining staffs and volunteers were in-charge
with the weekly operation of Bahay Musika for almost two months.
The success of the major events such as Medical Mission and Summer Camp wouldn't be
possible without their unremarkable efforts and dedication. This truly inspires other
clients to get involved and help others.

C. BALIK-ESKWELA PROGRAM

The event was held at Bahay Kalinga, DSWD

District V last April 2017. A total number of 66
participants benefited from this activity. Children
and youth were given basic school supplies as it
corresponds to the organization's undertaking
of providing our clients with opportunity for
education through giving them support and
resources they need in school. It aspires to
provide these children the means of access to a
better future; a pathway where they could
improve and develop their lives. Clients who
also showed excellence in their academics were
given recognition awards. This aimed to
appreciate and boost their self-confidence
while encouraging others to continue doing
their very best with their studies.

This all wouldn't be possible without the

assistance and support from our beloved sponsors;
▪ Mr. and Mrs. Simon Hunziker
▪ Mr. and Mrs. Robert Salamon
▪ Lloyd George Asia Foundation
▪ Kaibigan Bocholt E.V

B. CHRISTMAS PARTY

As part of the Annual Events of the Minstrels

Rhythm of Hope Inc., we held our Christmas
Party with the theme of "Christmas Saya sa
Bahay Musika" last December 21, 2016 at Manila
Social Welfare-District V in Paco, Manila. There
were 102 attendees who very much enjoyed
the program, prepared by students from
National Teacher’s College who are on
community immersion with the organization.

This yearly activity act in response to the organization’s undertaking by providing

underprivileged children's recreational activities to uplift their view in life. It intends to
give these children the way into occasions that will help them enhance and develop a
better version of them; despite the image of poverty they are in. As the true core of
Christmas is by making it a time of celebration, joy, giving and sharing.

We once again, liked to thank our dear

friends who shared their blessings for us to
celebrate this wonderful event:

• Mr. and Mrs. Robert & Eloisa Salamon

• Peter & Ann Cordingley & Family
• Knights of Columbus-Paco Chapter
• Kaibigan Bocholt
• Mr. Cary Gan

C. Socialization

Recreational Activities provides a leisure time for the children and youth to enjoy
activities while at the same time offers them a great way to socialize. This an essential part
of individual life that helps refresh and strengthen both the body and mind.

i. Film-viewing

We use FILM VIEWING as a medium to convey life

lessons to our clients as we believe that movies
are powerful and effective learning tool for
children and youths, and at the same time a
source of entertainment.

After every film, we encourage the clients to

participate on discussion as to what are the things
they have learned from the movies and how they
could apply those lessons to their daily lives.

a. Storks - the beneficiaries have witnessed a

kind of story that helped them realize the
importance of family relationship, dedication to
work and commitment. After the viewing, they
had an opportunity to socialize with others
through group sharing. They were grouped into
three and all of them are actively participating.
Leaders in each group explained clearly about
what they had learned from the movie. Group
interaction enhances their communication skills
and had a wonderful time altogether.

b. Treasure Planet – The film is about an

adventure in outer space that is a pleasure for
children who would like to understand the
difference between reality and fantasy. The
viewers were impressed and excited to the strange world they have witnessed in this
animated movie. There is a moral in the story that considers conscience and relationship.

25 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
c. Sing – When we are watching, all of the students are focused, and it seemed that they
enjoy watching as the movie has comedy scenes. They appear to be entertained about the
characters in the story. When we finished the show, we had discussed the lessons they
have learned. Also, they shared their favorite character in the movie. For them, lessons
learned are essential to everyone such as being determined, helpful and optimistic. Most
of them like the character of Buster Moon because he never gives up in all the trials he has
encountered in life. It serves as his motivation to pursue his dream.

d. Greater – The movie was an adaptation from a true story that makes us realize about
commitment in everything you do especially to God. The beneficiaries appreciate how
the character faced the challenges in pursuing his dreams. He has a strong faith in God
that gives him strength and eagerness to achieve his goal. The participants learned about
commitment, trust and love for the family.

ii. Valentine’s Day Celebration

One of the recreational activities that we provide to

the beneficiaries of Minstrels Rhythm of Hope Inc.
is the Socialization, wherein the participants learn
and interact with other personality from the
different programs of the organization during the
events. For the month of February, we had another
Valentine's Party for the children with the theme "A
Day To Love". We started with a short and fun
program wherein the children enjoyed the games
related to Valentines, such as Broken hearts, Under
sweet wraps, Val-ables, Breathless and theMr. and Ms.
Valentine 2017. They also took memorable pictures
on the do-it-yourself portrait of instagram-like
photo booth.

26 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
iii. Children's Month: “BATA, Iligtas sa Droga!” (November 16, 2017)

Republic Act No. 10661 declares the

month of November of every year as
National Children’s Month (NCM).
This declaration commemorates the
adoption of the Convention on the
Rights of the Child by the United
Nations General Assembly on 20
November 1989, and seeks to instill its
significance in the Filipino
consciousness. This year, we have
organized activities aligned with the
theme “BATA, Iligtas sa Droga!

The program includes Performing

Talents wherein they had shown their
abilities in dancing and acting that
increases self-confidence. Another one is
the implementations of group dynamics
in different range of ages which develops
their social interaction, enhances
leadership and teamwork.

During the group dynamics execution,

Slogan Making Contest is ongoing. We had
invited people to judge and choose the best
slogan made by ten participants from different
programs and activities. Mr. Jimbert Biligan,
one of our Board of Trustees, Mr. Jose Marie
Malaluan, former Children’s Choir
Conductor and Ms. Marilou Von Arx of Sun

Life Support (April 5, 2017)

Unexpected events often unforeseen. Thus,

there will be a need for assistance and
immediate action that should take place for the
safety of the individuals. In line with this issue,
we have invited people from Public Assistance
for Rescue and Disaster Support Services
Foundation Incorporated (PARDSS FI) to
provide lecture and demonstration that can
share knowledge and skills to each and everyone
in our organization.

We held the activity at Bahay Musika, wherein clients

from all the programs and activities were
encouraged to participate. PARDSS had an ocular
visit around the vicinity to check if fire exits are
available within the building. They taught the staffs
and clients the proper way of using the fire
extinguisher. After the ocular, we had the lecture
on different forms of natural and man-made disaster
namely earthquake, house fire and typhoon. First
aid about body fracture and fire burn was included
in the lecture. Demonstration of first aid procedure
was conducted and one of the beneficiaries coming
from the children’s choir, Patrick Malupa joined the
simulation and acted as a patient that was aided by

PARDSS FI. Generally, the event was successfully done with essential information
provided as well as proper procedures in any circumstances. Awareness about disaster
preparedness is a big help for every individual. We can share and teach our family
members to be ready in all situations. It is really of help to the staff and volunteers of
MRHI to obtain essential knowledge and skills, especially that we are catering children
and youth in the organization.

ii. Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit – FOR LIFE! (July 22, 2017)

Annually, The National Nutrition Council (NNC) led and

organized a nationwide campaign for the celebration of
Nutrition Month. This year it was approved by the NNTC
Technical Committee to focus on the promotion of health
with the theme, Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit – FOR LIFE!

Our organization brings attention in giving the right food to

our clients in the Feeding Program every after activity to help
them maintain good health. In line with this, we had invited
Ms. Baby Ruth Guevarra, professor at The National Teachers
College to share awareness about nutrition. The guest speaker
gives a lot of information
not only in nutrition but
also about personal
hygiene. The speaker also
mentioned about her life situation when she was
young and her daily routine now at her age to inspire
children on having a good lifestyle.

The seminar ended well and easy to understand by

the participants. Some had asked questions to the
speaker that creates interaction among the members.

iv. Seminar: Reproductive Health and Early Pregnancy (September 10,

2017)

Early pregnancy is a serious issue nowadays especially in the Philippines. Many Filipinos
today remain ill-informed when it comes to reproductive health; therefore, we have
decided to include this topic every year.

29 | M i n s t r e l s R h y t h m o f H o p e , I n c .
We have invited a person who is
knowledgeable in sharing ideas about
early pregnancy and reproductive
health, Mr. Erickson Bernardo, Youth
Coordinator of Likhaan Center for
Women’s Health who is also a
Registered Nurse with awards from the
university where he graduated.
"Kabataang Pilipino, Gawain,
Edukasyon at Kalusugan" are the main
topics he discussed in the event. The
beneficiaries and staffs understood and
valued what they had learned to
improve their well-being. This helped
them to be concerned not only with
themselves but also with the society.

In this event, it is observed that the

people are interested regardless of the
sensitivity of the topic given. We all
know that most Filipinos are not used
to hear or even share things associated
with sex education. It is an evidence
that the participants are matured
enough to deal with the reality of life.

v. Life Skills (September 23, 2017)

Life skills are the abilities we need to face the

challenges of everyday life. When we learn or
adapt new skills we develop our abilities and
apply it in all the experiences we encounter
while we live. We need to find ways to be
strong and to know how to cope up with every
challenge in life. Productivity and fulfillment in
life will follow if we are willing to learn life
skills.

To increase the awareness of life skills, Ms.
Haina Jane A. Isip lectured topics for the
staffs and beneficiaries. All the subjects were
discussed clearly and most of them interacted
very well in the activity. To have deeper
information, they watched a movie entitled
(Taklub), a story about the life of the people
in Tacloban Philippines after the super
typhoon Haiyan. It shows us how to live with
faith and uphold endurance. Afterwards they
list down “I am, I have, I can, I will” to
understand the concept of resiliency.

B. Case Conferences

Case Conferences are held quarterly to analyze the current situation of the Major
Program’s (arts and craft works, children’s choir, minstrels of hope, theater arts and
educational program), and of the beneficiaries (skills, attitude, health, economic and
educational aspects). They also provide opportunities, to discuss and identify child’s
situation in programs and activities and to identify clients who need interventions.

The case conferences were organized by the program coordinator, educational

assistance coordinator and instructional and assistant managers.

C. Friendly Encounters

The Friendly Encounter Session is a program

exclusively meant to help the MRH clients, volunteers and
Instructional Managers to go through their daily life
difficulties. The Minstrels Rhythm of Hope took this
initiative to create conducive atmosphere for ventilating
feelings, emotions and concerns and to establish a friendly
rapport between the resource person (social worker) and
the client so that the person concerned will open up with
trust and confidence. This year, the social worker was
able to conduct 1 group session, using the focus group
discussion, and 8 sessions with individuals using the one on
one approach.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 – P ARTNER AGENC IES

A. National Teachers College

In partnership with the National Teachers College, they had planned to reach out to the
community and help our clients, especially the students through a tutorial program that
started last December 2017. Students from the Community Immersion were introduced
to the clients. They were the ones who assisted the staff with the preparation of the
Christmas Party. At the time of the party, they also hosted the program and the games. It
is evident on their faces that they enjoyed mingling with the clients. Next year, they will
be assisting and tutoring willing students across all programs.

b. De La Salle – College of Saint-Benilde

Last November of 2017, we have established a partnership with the Center for Social
Action of College Saint-Benilde. This is good news for the organization, as we widen our
network, partnering with these institutions will help us to reach out to local sponsors.
Partnership with Benilde will help us send out scholars to their college, with free tuition
fees. They will also provide students who undergo NSTP to assist us with our programs
and activities, this could be of huge help especially to our clients.
