Ideas & Content:
Mastery- 3/3 - Establishes a situation and introduces one or more characters; Creates a specific, focused, and detailed story with a clear beginning, middle, and
end.
Competency- 2/3 - Attempts to describe and detail a situation or character, but may lack details, details may be general, or lack connection.
Developing- 1/3 - Does not tell a story; Lacks focus and/or purpose.
Narrative Elements:
Mastery- 3/3 – Uses dialogue, description, and pacing to create the plot and develop the story.
Competency- 2/3 – Attempts to use dialogue, description, or pacing to create the plot and develop the story, but there may be gaps or vagueness.
Developing- 1/3 – Shows little or no attempt to use dialogue, description, or pacing or the response is too brief to demonstrate their use.
Organization:
Mastery- 3/3 – Organizes events in a clear, logical order; Sequence of events moves the reader smoothly through the story; Sentences and paragraphs are tied
together (transitions).
Competency- 2/3 – Organizes events in a sequence, but there may be gaps or vagueness; Reader may be confused by lack of information or poorly placed events.
Developing- 1/3 – Writing is hard to follow; Sequence is disorganized or incomplete; the response is too brief to demonstrate sequence of events.
Voice:
Mastery- 3/3 – Clear connection with purpose and audience; Tells the story from the first-person POV; Shares a range of emotions.
Competency- 2/3 – Attempts to connect with the purpose and audience; Tells the story from the first-person POV; Shares some range of emotion.
Developing- 1/3 – Narrator and audience and/or purpose are disconnected; Lacks emotion; Writing is flat. Not in first-person POV.
Sentence Fluency:
Mastery- 3/3 – Sentences are well-crafted; Sentence lengths and patterns vary
Competency- 2/3 – Sentences are understandable, but may be choppy, rambling, or awkward; May lack sentence variety
Developing- 1/3 – Sentences are incomplete, rambling, or confusing; May have trouble understanding how words and sentences fit together.
Transitions:
Mastery- 3/3 – Uses words and phrases to connect events and show changes in time and setting.
Competency- 2/3 – Uses some words and phrases to connect or show changes in time and setting.
Developing- 1/3 – Little to no attempt at transitions.
