Titanium Alloys:

■ Comparison Between amorphous and

crystalline alloys:
Amorphous alloys are:
▪ More Stable in acidic and alkaline solution
▪ More unstable in aggressive chloride solution
▪ Corrosion resistance higher than crystallized alloys
▪ Higher Tensile Strength than crystalline
▪ Lower Young’s Modulus than crystalline

■ Classification of Titanium Alloys

■ α - type (or near α-alloys):

▪ Contain neutral alloying element (such

as tin) and / or alpha stabilizers (such as Al
and O) only
▪ non-heat treatable
▪ low to medium strength
▪ good toughness and good ductility
▪ excellent properties at cryogenic
temperatures
▪ existence of more alpha in the alloy offers
Offers high temperature creep strength and
Oxidation resistance
α and near α alloys example:

Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V
Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo
Ti-5Al-3Sn-3Zr-1Nb
Ti-5Al-4Sn-4Zr-1Nb
Ti-6Al-3Sn-4Zr-0.5Si

α - β type:
▪ Meta stable and generally include some combination of
both alpha and beta stabilizers
▪ Can be heat treatable
▪ Strength levels are medium to high
▪ High temperature creep strength is not as good as most
alpha alloys
▪ Ti-6Al-4V is the most alpha beta alloy used
α - β Alloys:
Ti-6Al-4V
Ti-6Al-4V ELI
Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn
Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo

β - type: (Beta and near Beta alloys)

▪ Meta stable and which contain sufficient beta stabilizers
▪Fully heat treatable
▪ offer high strength up to intermediate temperature
levels
▪ Possess good creep resistance up to intermediate
temperatures

Β alloy and near Beta Alloys example:

Ti-10V2Fe3Al
Ti-5Al-2Sn-2Zr-4Mo-4Cr

Β alloys contain sufficient beta-stabilizer which can be

divided into two categories according to their
constitutional behavior with titanium:
▪ Beta-isomorphous elements
▪ Beta-eutectoid elements
Figure 3. Effect of beta-isomorphous elements on titanium

Properties: (Mechanical,Electrical,thermal)
- Excellent in Corrosion resistance (Contruction Material)
- High strength and perfectly elastic
- Low thermal conductivity
- Excellent at low temperature (hardness)
- Super conductivity and high electric resistance
- Extremely low magnetism
- Easy temperature rise (heat capacity)
