This is a direct citation of the Audi “Cashew” commercial that I used. It is a video of the full
commercial that aired during Super Bowl 2019. This is the most important citation because it is

This book is titled The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir who studied feminism. In her book
she talks about how women are objectified as being others or second to men. The book also talks
about how men are seen as the norm of society and women are seen as a deviation of the norm.
I used these ideas to help me analyze if Audi was using women as a deviation of men in their
commercial. Given that you only see women for about ten seconds throughout the whole
commercial, it can be argued that Audi is portraying women as a deviation or second to men.

Stereotypes.” Journal of Public Affairs (14723891), vol. 10, no. 1/2, Feb. 2010, pp. 19–
This is an article from the College of the Canyons database directly from the Journal of Public
Affairs. This article talks about the traditional stereotypes between men and women. It talks
about how these stereotypes are used to the advantage of advertisers when selling a product.
I used this piece in my project when thinking about how men are seen as more masculine and
would be more likely to know more about cars like Audi than women would. This article
confirms that companies use stereotypes in their commercials to sell their products just as Audi

Tyson, Lois. Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide. , 2015. Print, Ch. 4

Critical Theory Today written by Lois Tyson talks about different lenses that someone can use in
analyzing different works like movies, television, art, or public spaces. There is a specific
chapter that talks about feminism and vocabulary within feminism that a lot of people have never
heard of.
The specific thing that helped me from Critical Theory Today was when she talks about social
constructionism which is gender categories being controlled by society. I was able to use this
because gender categories being controlled by society starts with the influence of media
reinforcing those categories making it harder to be progressive and step out of gender
stereotypes.
