CONTENT ANALYSIS
I. OBJECTIVES

This research utilizes the qualitative method of linguistic research which indicates
and analyzes the suprasegmental phonemes in the sentences of an excerpt from the
Third State of the Nation Address of President Carlos P. Garcia. All the sentences in the
indicated with sentence stress, stressing only the content words. The sentence

III. FINDINGS
Stresses are indicated in the first, second, third and even in the fourth syllables of
the content. The emphasis is indicated on the content words hence, sentence stress is a
content words markers. Junctures are indicated in each sentence to demarcate each
thought unit. The single slash (/) indicates sustained levels, double slash (//) indicates
thought unit. Thus, 2-3-2 pitch level for sustained or unfinished thought units and 2-3-1
pitch levels is indicated to determine a statement. And 2-3-3 for a series of words or it
mentioned uncertainty or incompletion. Hence pitch levels are sentence types markers.
Intonations mark the integration of stress, pitch levels, and junctures. 2-31 pattern
comma or it indicates a questions answerable by yes or no. Hence, intonations are speech
prosody markers.
Based on the findings, it has been concluded that the suprasegmental phonemes of
English are revealed in the sentences in the speech excerpt of President Carlos P. Garcia’s
RECOMMENDATIONS
phonemes, the following recommendations are offered. Stress should be learned since
the language since it is an integral part of oral communication. Teachers should learn first
the easy formula in knowing and practicing proper intonation patterns in sentences to be
