If you require more information on an event in the above list, please use the contact details in
the right hand column. Quite often full details have been in a previous newsletter, so please
refer back first. We do not want to continually repeat flyers and notices in the newsletter as it
takes up space and raises cost of printed copies.

Important notice from your Editor
You may have read in recent Minutes of the club meetings that I intend stepping down from the
Newsletter Editor’s role at the next AGM. I took it on in September 2013 after the AGM when
no one came forward to take over from the previous Editor, as a very temporary stop gap until
someone else could take over. By the next AGM I will have done the job for 6 years.

I have enjoyed doing it but it becomes difficult for me when I have so many other things to do
and pressure is on once the meeting has taken place to get it completed and out to the
members and time is not always on my side.

If you are a confident user of a computer, it should not be difficult. I use MS Publisher format
which is great to use making positioning of items so easy and I strongly recommend its use.
If you are interested and would like to know more of what is involved, please contact me direct
at amvcs.editor@btinternet.com
Then it is down to getting nominated at the AGM and you go from there!

Regards,
Richard Farrant, Editor

President’s Report:
What a busy month for AMVCS members with all the preparation of vehicles and attendance at Anzac Day
Events around the country. Thank you all for your participation. It was great to see so many people watching the
ceremonies /services. I can only comment on two. The service and parade through the local streets organised by
Ashfield RSL with special thanks going to Pete Pether, were very moving. The second event at Miranda organised
by AMVCS member Alan Lark, was attended by around 5000 people. Attendance at all events indicates the
Australians still remember and value the sacrifices made by our soldiers both men and women in all wars and
pay tribute to them. It brings tears to the eyes to see so many ex-servicemen still proudly marching or riding in
our vehicles.
Thank you Al Hirschel for coordinating the Anzac Day Events. Can you please send all reports, photos, etc. on
your Anzac Day event/s to Al so he can forward a combined report to Richard.
I believe from reports that Ironfest at Lithgow was very successful. Unfortunately I could not attend due to prior
commitments, but have heard so many favorable comments.
I hate to harp but it is becoming serious. We definitely need a Newsletter Editor for our magazine, as Richard is
retiring from this position in September. Richard has offered to help the new Editor.
The storage van is coming along well thanks to the many volunteers and the co-ordination of Brian Healey. This
van will make a great difference to the Club as many people at present are storing AMVCS equipment at their
house or under beds as my wife says.
We now have a Medical Register book for the location of Medical equipment, which is held by Jane Packer. This
book also contains Working With Children numbers and expiry dates. This book will be at each meeting. Can you
please add your number and expiry date to the book. “Working with Children” can be applied for online and is
free to volunteers. In the Medical Register Book is the Working with Children and Equipment Register as well.

Next month Brian Healey will be in the chair as I will be on holidays.

Max Mann - President
President’s Report accepted: Moved: Anne Dignam. Seconded: Lawrie Winney. Motion carried.

Public Relations Officer’s Report:

Since our last meeting we attended ANZAC Day at Harbord then made our way to Lithgow for Ironfest. It was
good to have an extra night there. There was a good roll up of vehicles in our area plus other members of the
AMVCS were located in other groups around the showground and with AAVA. We were fortunate it didn’t rain
however was a bit windy on Friday.
Last weekend there was a large auction near Wagga Wagga and it consisted of a number of military vehicles.
I recorded the prices while watching it online.
Centurion Tank - $120,000
Bren Gun carrier - $46,000
Harley Davidson - $35,000
Studebaker with winch - $28,000.
Other vehicles included Blitz, Land Rover, Wiles Cooker, Maple Leaf Chev, various Studebakers which were not in
going order, Diamond T, International, GMC and a number of Furphy water tanks.
Update on Graham Arkle:
This week marks 8 weeks since the accident. In this time he has had 9 surgeries (more to come), but finally got
the external fixation off. He is unable to walk but all going well in 5 weeks will be able to start weight bearing
and then learning to walk again. (Tilly’s a pro now so she'll be able to teach him.) At last count 17 fractures/
breaks, uncountable staples and stitches to get him back in one piece!

He is in high spirits but still a long road!! He was transferred yesterday to the Epworth Hospital near Geelong.
(After hearing from a Victorian member who visited him in Geelong he will be transferred back to the Alfred
today.)

1995 BTTT at Manguri (near to Coober Pedy)

Back to the Track 2020 Countdown—14 months to go

J.A. Gordon
Since our last Bulletin, we have had the opportunity to meet Doug Draeger in person and hear his interesting
presentation at Corowa in March. Doug has also recently released a Newsletter providing updated details for the
event.
BTTT Update - Doug has held meeting with relevant agencies to firm-up details for the various events to be held
over the BTTT programme. A revised Itinerary is included in his latest Newsletter and on the website.
No Convoy - Whilst not new, the most important
matter confirmed by Doug is that there will be NO
official convoy of historic military vehicles to be
arranged for the journey between Alice Springs and
Darwin. The sheer number of entrants that exceeds
150 vehicles and the logistics of managing a convoy
on a busy public highway have precluded this option.
Instead, participants will be given a timetable of
events and then make their own arrangements on
moving from one location to another.
Safety - AMVCS will work with its members and other
participants to ensure we maintain high levels of
safety before, during and after the event. Whilst we
are not advocating official “convoys” we would Back to 1995 BTTT ….. Just out of Alice Springs on the first
encourage our participating members to determine day, Brian Bell’s Blitz undergoing valve adjustments. Will
how they could best operate safely in small groups or Davey working on the engine, with Brian in centre and Dave
“packets” to improve the safety of slow moving Brown on right.
vehicles. This is most relevant given the recent
unfortunate experience with the Stalwart on its way to Corowa this year (refer previous Newsletter).
In regard to safety, we will run a series of articles on things to consider when planning for BTTT including:
Tyre safety for the entry vehicle, support vehicles and trailers – An article from J.A. Gordon regarding tyre
safety will be in next month’s newsletter.
The legality of placing an amber flashing (or strobe) light on a slow moving vehicle for improved visibility and
safety.
The legality of placing a “Slow vehicle/s ahead” sign on the rear of a vehicle.
Strategic placement of support vehicles before and after member’s/participant’s ad-hoc vehicle packets
Safety equipment that may be considered (vests; cones; lighting; fire extinguisher, first aid kit)
Spares - Some members have already started to think about what spares to bring in support of their vehicles.
With many folks running similar vehicles such as jeeps, an obvious opportunity exists to pool some of the heavier
and more expensive spares to provide support without everyone needing to carry excess spares.
Permits - Anne Dignam and Lawrie Winney have been looking into permits that may be necessary. The itinerary
mentions a school visit in the NT. This will most likely require the participants to hold a “Working with Children
Clearance” permit in the NT. Note that the NSW checks DO NOT work for the NT which has its procedures. The
NT permit is issued by “SAFE NT”, costs $7 , takes at least 1 month to issue (we recommend allow 3 months) and
are current for 2 years from issue. Further, those planning a visit to the Woomera Rocket Range on the way to or

“Rough Tracks” - AMVCS Newsletter Page 9

from Alice Springs will need a permit to
visit. Other permits will be needed if
you wish to visit specific parks in SA and
the NT.
Anne will provide details in a future
issue.
AMVCS BTTT Session - Our President
Max Mann will schedule a meeting in
the coming months for members to
meet and discuss preparation for the
event. Details will be advised in
advance.
Questions/Suggestions - please let us
know your questions and ideas for the
event. Back to 1995 BTTT …… “A” packet stopped for a break at the Devil’s Marbles.
More next issue! This packet was made up of AMVCS members mainly. In the photo is Dave
Brown, Warren Brown, Mark Weltner, Tom Rolfe, Grahame Thomas, Lawrie
Including more flashbacks from 1995 Winney, Darren Thomson, Alan Walker, Capt. John Putt RACT. Cannot
determine the others in the photo, but think Ray Kickert should be there.

Riverstone Festival Parade - report by Tony Playle

Great Parade, and we won an award for Best

Auto Club (a first at Rivo) which turned out to
be a plaque, mounted on a RIVERSTONE, so
indeed a great day.
After the parade we had an impromptu
invitation to join the Sydney Jeep Club static
display (which was attending also as a separate
festival event) & we were warmly welcomed.
As they said, ‘after all you guys have the
original JEEPS’ .
It certainly made for interesting display with
the originals and the later marques. We may
make joining them after the festival as a regular
event, to put on our own separate static display in the future. We presented 8 jeeps & 2 Land Rovers including
Warren & Jane's Ambulance (complete with 2 patients), they also joined us at the jeeps static display. John &
Alan led the Parade in their military escort jeeps, we were
number two in the parade following the NSW Mounted Police &
the Light Horse re enactment troop. John Weeks was sporting
his newly acquired WW2 MB previously restored in RHD and
which included a striking display of some of his skilfully created
military commanders’ busts in faux bronze. John’s jeep had been
restored by a late Lieutenant Commander RAN as his personal
jeep. Charles was driving an uncommon Post War military Willys
made under licence by Mitsubishi with an original turbo diesel
motor, refer to photos on Page 28.
Attendees on this fine & sunny morning were John Somers, Alan
Shepherd, Mick Jericevich, John Gordon, Tony Playle, Rob &
Carol Alexander, Charles Dimech, John Weeks, Warren and
Jane Packer.

Kate and Tonys Farm ( Leebold Farm) Queens Birthday long weekend.....Kangaroo Valley.
8th - 10th June
As some may remember the club has a successful long weekend at Leebold farm some four years ago, since then
Leebold farm has been sold to Kate and Tony who have become members of the AMVCS and they now have a
growing collection of ex military vehicles.
Access to Leebold farm is by Leebold Hill Rd which is at the top hair pin curve on the Moss Vale Rd at
Camberwarra Mountain. 8 km of easy fire trail is then drive to reach the property gate.
Since four years ago the access roads have been improved so a family driven with care can reach the property.
Small AMVCS signs will be placed on the Leebold Hill/fire trail road so people will not tend to take the wrong
turn.
Camper vans welcome, but not full size caravans. Pets would be problematic as Kate and Tony have plenty of
their own animals running around the place.
There are plans to provide a Portaloo. You will need to be self sufficient power, food and water etc.
A mini bike would be OK if ridden with common sense off the property itself.
Kate and Tony have been cleaning up the place and timber and fire wood is everywhere...………...with very little
work we should be able to have a huge cracker night bon type fire. We should be able to do a run up to nearby
Mt Scani via private property as done last time and play with the vehicles over the logs in the bottom paddock.
For a near Sydney drink in the bush long weekend , some excellent views and wild life and mild vehicle play this
weekend would suit.
Ring myself Ron King on 0408 205 500 or Tony Banks on 0428 944 373.
Just remember Tony is a busy time poor type of bloke when you ring him.
The weekend will still be on Rain, Hail or Shine

Kate and Tonys Place.....Leebold Farm...…...Leebold Hill Road

Leebold Hill Road is called Redrocks Road on some maps.
It is sign posted at the top of the mountain as Leebold Hill Road.
As approaching the top of the climb on Moss Vale/Kangaroo Valley road about 10km from Nowra is a very sharp
hair pin turn.
The hair pin turn is a junction for the tourist road to Camberwarra Mt. look-out and tea room and tourist road to
Berry, which is on the outside of the hair pin turn which is straight forward intersection.
On the inside of this turn is Leebold Hill road which is not seen until its too late to turn into it...………….you must
turn early and hard before the crest of the hill using as much of the width of the road way as possible to turn in a
single swing and it is a upwards climb in the turn as well.
Larger vehicles ….ie. trucks will not make this turn...….therefore it recommended to turn into the tourist road ,
stop to one side and have some one to guide you through multi point turns and watch for traffic etc.
When on Leebold Road you will climb up higher, sound horn on blind corners and follow the main track through
for about 3 or 4 Kms and watch for small AMVCS signs
At this point you will come to a Y intersection with a metal kangaroo sign.
Keep to the left and go up the hill.
Follow this through until you reach another Y intersection...…..go to the left again (should be a National Parks
sign near by).
Follow this through for a few more kms passing a a private road intersection on the left and another National
Parks sign on the right and the road will now descend for about one Km.
At the bottom of the descent will be twin gates which will be open, go straight ahead through these.
Shortly after the gates will be a short steep climb and a short time later passing another open gate way and some
machinery on the right you will see on the right the gate for Leebold Farm.
Go through this gate and descend to the sheds near the farm house.
The camp area will be in a lower area descending past the farm house and sheds.
Ron.

South Coast Update…April 2019
Hello to all members of the AMVCS, I have decided to put some recent events to paper to keep all the
“TOWNIES” informed of what us “Seachange” members have been up to…
1st up, in case no one has noticed I have purchased a ….Land Rover….ARGHHHHH! The jeep nut has gone mad!!!
(Yep I’ve finally gone over to the dark side!!) So a 6x6 isn’t really going to go unnoticed in a small country town!!!
And yes I am still amazed about how well this vehicle gets along, its ride and handling are spot on only bad thing
is its 19 mtr turning circle!!! – oh and it’s a b..i..t.. NOISEY!!! over 80kph
One thing I have really noticed is that if I have to replace any parts... I can’t simply go to the shed and raid my
supply of parts!!!! So that means finding parts on the internet…and guess what - there is an ample supply, BUT, I
have suddenly become aware of NOS parts Vs Chinese knock off parts and have now got a day to day update on
the Pound/Euro Vs Australian Dollar.
So far a speedo cable, wiper motor and wiper control stalk have been the only mechanical faults. Speedo cable
was as easy as expected, amazing when you can unscrew the dash pod and have enough room to get your hands
behind the speedometer….original cable had not been routed correctly, with an almost 90 deg bend, not good. I
now have a working speedometer and have also had it confirmed by several other Land Rover owners that it is
THE MANDETORY 10kms out! - Confirmed via my GPS…. Now the wiper motor was another story……
1st up CHECK the vehicle manual for the ORIGINAL part number…. STICK to this number…. Search hi and low for
the correct number….. for me I got the correct one from England ex MOD ( Ministry Of Defence) part, BUT it was
for a 110 4x4, difference??? 4x4 wiper sweep angle is 90 degrees… 6x6 wiper sweep angle is 115 degrees… but it
is suitable for 12/24volt, and comes with the return to bottom of windscreen stop feature, an intermittent mode
and 2 speed operation and even a water spray function, everything you can want in a wiper system. To change
the wiper sweep angle, I disassembled the wiper gear, 4 small cover screws, and one circlip, tap tap out with the
90 degree gear, insert the original 115 degree gear, grease well, reassemble and voila! New wiper motor to suit a
6x6! Install using that third hand to hold the motor in place, second and first hand to install the wiper
reciprocating shaft, bush, circlip and don’t forget that grease always gets on everything! Simple…time taken…
3 HOURS!
BUT it was WORTH it… has it rained since? Nope! Cost 75pounds...20 pounds delivery!!! XMOD parts England…
selling ORIGINAL ex Mil parts…no guarantee they have what you want but wow what a lot of stuff for sale…
Makes Frontline seem like the corner shop!
Now for the replacement of the wiper stalk, vehicle original would only work on 2 nd wiper speed and only when it
wanted to, there was a great game of timing to switch off the stalk to return the wiper blade anywhere near the
bottom of the windscreen, and no water spray, got this part from BRITPART, great service and fast delivery,
35pounds delivered, for a Chinese knockoff, stalk was shorter than original, internal wiring was not soldered,
wire colour code was different to original but it did have an ORIGINAL Land Rover rubber grommet connector,
would have been great if the wiring loom wasn’t 75mm shorter than the original one….time to install? 20
minutes, time to repair to original spec? 40 min…
Lord help me if I have to replace anything serious!!!!
So think the Chinese knockoff part is only for the Land Rover brigade????
Recently replaced the points and condenser on my Willys jeep…..a 20 minute job…… 3 hours later jeep was
purring like a kitten. Points were a great fit, but the condenser bracket was an absolute horror to fit, it blocked
the rotor shaft from spinning, and on first install, didn’t even fit in the distributor…..that afternoon whilst having
the congratulatory beer…I thanked my lucky stars that my trade started as a maintenance fitter… I think that it
will be coming in handy on a lot more future jobs.
Oh, and we’ve been out on the trails with the 6x6, it EATS corrugations…but the vibrations weren’t good for the
passenger door lock, clips, rod or latch-they are somewhere on the 16kms of track!
Awaiting new old stock parts from the UK, wonder how long this “simple” replacement will take?

Regards to all members,

Ray 6x6 Kickert

Ashfield RSL ANZAC Commemoration – John A Gordon

AMVCS has always been a strong supporter of the ANZAC Service for the Ashfield RSL Club. The event usually
occurs on the Sunday previous to ANZAC Day. This year due to the timing of Easter, the event was held very
early on Sunday 14 April. This must be one of our earliest ANZAC ceremonies in 2019! I arrived at the Ashfield
Park around 0800 to reserve some parking spots for our jeeps prior to the event. Even at that time, the park was
busy with joggers, walkers, and others enjoying the beautiful morning. Later when I heard the distinctive,
melodious “purr” of a jeep approaching, I half expected to see the late Roly Davey and his son in their jeep.

Notwithstanding that they lived in the Blue Mountains, they were always early to arrive. Roly’s spirit lives on in
the sense that Peter Pether soon arrived in his trusty Perentie 110 GS that he had previously purchased from
Roly. Peter set up in the park with flags and other equipment to support the ceremony and later joined our
group of vehicles. Again, we had a strong contingent of jeeps attending. Mick Jericevich with his Kiwi desert
jeep; Max the Mann, Tony Playle and two new players, John Somers and new member Alan Shepherd both with
their “shiny” jeeps. John Somers as a new participant was selected to lead the parade. There was the usual
strong support from the NSW Police and local school bands. All jeeps were filled with Vet riders for the long
march to Ashfield RSL Club. Paul Sansom was also present supporting the activities on behalf of the Sub-branch.
We enjoyed a brief lunch and drink in the Club before some members headed west for another service. Our
members enjoyed the day and received positive feedback from the Club via Peter Pether who is also a
sub-branch member. Thanks to all members who attended and supported this event.
Note for next year: we will need at least 7 jeeps

Ironfest report - from Jane Packer
Photos by Jan Thompson
Wow! What an amazing weekend. Ironfest once again proved to be an outstanding event. Well
organised, well attended and fantastic fun with great atmosphere.
We headed up on the Thursday as did Jan and Troy, Richard and family, and a few others and set
up camp. The weather was beautiful throughout, although quite windy on the Friday.
The theme for this year was ‘Once Upon a Time’. It never
ceases to amaze me how much effort people go to with
dressing up in costume. There was a Princess Fiona from
the movie Shrek, a Cinderella and many other characters.
These people must spend so much time, effort and money
on their outfits.
The displays around the show ground were spectacular,
from medieval knights jousting to army re-enactment
groups as well as blacksmiths, robots, army tanks and a
children’s kingdom where a real mermaid lived!
Our display was well attended also. Trent and Hayley arrived on Friday with their DUKW which,
along with jeeps, Perenties, many other vehicles and our old ambulance were shown a lot of
interest by the public.
On Saturday afternoon we were entertained on
the arena by re enactments of wars and battles
through the ages from medieval battles to
Vietnam as well an amazing display by light
horsemen re enactors. Warren joined the
Vietnam group and had fun ‘playing’ soldiers,
shooting a rifle and being ‘killed!’ The display
finished with army trucks and tanks being
hijacked by characters in costume as they
paraded around.
Overall Ironfest is an awesome event and well
worth attending. Next year the theme will be
‘Gothic’. No doubt there will be keen attendees already working on their costumes! We will
definitely be going again next year and look forward to the fun.
Jane
