To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Joanne Shaw and I seeking a teaching position within your school division. I pride myself in my
work ethic, the relationships I build with my students, as well as my strong organizational and planning skills. I
have a love of learning and am always striving to do better through self-reflection and feedback from others.

My experiences with children have varied inside and outside of the traditional classroom. Some of these
experiences include my practicums, after school programs, mentorship programs, day camps, and substitute
teaching. This has given me the confidence to successfully teach diverse students in a variety of situations
while maintaining a safe and caring inclusive environment.

The past couple of years I have been covering back to back maternity leaves at Vermilion Elementary School;
last year I taught Grade 3 and this year I am currently teaching Grade 2. This has allowed me to become
familiar with some of the elementary curriculum and experience teaching to various learning styles in order to
ensure success for each student based on their individual needs. I use SMART technology and other
technology in my lessons when possible in order to create engaging, interactive lessons. I have also been
incorporating project based learning with research projects into my lessons that have real-life applications to
increase engagement and purpose to their learning.

Throughout my education and past experiences, I have developed the skills and interests required to be an
engaging and effective educator. While teaching at Delnorte School, I was able to develop my management
skills as I taught split classes, which included 3/4 and 5/6. Although I have minimal experience with afterschool
sports, I am more than willing to learn in order to help out with various extracurricular activities. I coached the
Cross-Country team at Delnorte, co-organized an Art Show, and prepared the elementary Christmas Concert
performances. At VES, I helped with Drama club and the yearbook, and I am on the Accelerated Reading
Committee to help organize events that fostered a love of reading in students. I found all of these activities to
be very fulfilling and a great way to build relationships with students outside of the classroom.

I am a passionate, caring, driven individual that exhibits a love of learning and I look forward to being able to
pass this on to my students. Please feel free to view my teaching portfolio online which can be found at
joanneshaw.weebly.com. I am excited and prepared to provide a positive addition to your school. Please
contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I can be reached at (780) 581-5238 or by email at
jeshaw@ualberta.ca. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Joanne Shaw
