Containers are arranged in rows next to each other

As per the cleint requirement the containers will be stack in 3 highs. The containers can be stacked in rows and blocks.
Container corner casting as per BPA DM is 178mm x 162mm

Table -18 (Interpave DM)

3.1 Conatainer stacking in rows;

From Table-18 (BPA - interpave design manual)

The load on Pavement for 3- high stacking in rows is 365.8 KN

Using the Base thickness chart for C8/10 (Pg-83 - DM)

C8/10 Base thickness is = 340 mm

3.2 Conatainer stacking in Blocks;

from Table-18 (BPA design manual)

The load on Pavement for 3- high stacking in Blocks is 731.5 KN

Using the Base thickness chart for C8/10 (Pg-83 - DM)

C8/10 Base thickness is = 540 mm

Max Load on pavement W (SEWL) 732

8.0 Calculation of Equivalent number of repetion and Max SEWL

The equivalent number of repetions can be calclated by the following formula;

ENR = Design life (in years) * Lane factor x { damaging effect (unladen) x design repetions (unladen) +
Damaging effect (laden) x design repetions (laden)} / Max critical d

Lane width factor is determined as follows;

(lane width) / (Max vehicle width) is less than 3 lane width factor = 1.00
(lane width) / (Max vehicle width) is between 3 to 5.5 lane width factor = 0.50
(lane width) / (Max vehicle width) is greater than 5.5 lane width factor = 0.30

Assumed lane wdith = 4.5

8A Base Thickness Design from Chart (Interpave- BPA design manual)

C8/10 CBGM is the standard Base used as design standard with CBP of 80mm and 30mm sand laying course
The Subbase layer (foundation layer) as per DM is given in Tb-20 (pg52) is 150mm for Subgrade CBR 5%
and greater.
Using Material equivalency Table (Tb-13), C8/10 CBGM can be converted into alternate materials
Using Base Thickness chart for C8/10 CBGM of DM(Pg-84) base thickness of C8/10 can be obtained with
Max wheel load (kN) and number of repetitions (passes) that were calculated

Page 15
Base thickness of C8/10 CBGM is obtained as follows;

On vertical axis, the SEWL is 738 kN

The appropriate curve is in between 1.5 million and 4 million passes for 1,891,496 passses
Doing linear interpolation calculation, the thickness of base C 8/10 with CBP is 670.00 mm

To change the base material from Standard C8/10 CBGM and surface material from ICB the following
formula can be applied accroding to Interpave (BPA) design manual;

dnew = dstand x (σstand / σnew)

1/2

Where;
dnew = the revise base thickness for alternative material
dstand = the design thickness of specified C8/10 CBGM
σstand = tensile strength of C8/10 CBGM
σnew = tensile strength of alternative material

8C Pavement joints

The concrete slab length to width aspect ratio shall not be more than 1.25 (i.e, 6.1m long and 4.90m wide)
- Contraction joints
The contraction joints typical depth is 1/3 (Longitudinal joint) - 1/4 (Transverse joint) of the depth of slab.
These should be placed in random sequence and shall be selaed with sealent as per AASHTO, ASTM
or Bristish specifications. The two types of contraction joints are below;
- Longitudinal joints
The slab will be casted in one length of the whole width of the Apron and the longitudinal joints will be
engroved 1/3 of the specified slab thickness by saw cut at every 4.90m
- Tranverse joints - Dowel bars
Dowel bars placed at transverse joints, width of dowel bars shall be asper below table;

Slab Depth (cm) Diameter (cm)

20 2.5
23-27 3.2
≥ 28 3.8

The dowels bars shall be 45 cm long with a spacing of 30cm, the bars should be epoxy coated and should
be lubricated to prevent bonding with the concrete. One end of dowel bar is encased in sleeve and
capped with water proof expansion cap.
- Joint sealent
The lubricants for installation of preformed compression seals shall be as recommended by the seal
manufacturer. The seals shall be installed by suitable tools using an approved lubricant-adhesive which shall
cover both sides of the sealer. The seals shall be installed in a substantially full compressed condition and shall
at all times be below the level of the pavement surface by approximately 6 mm (1/4 inch). The seals should
conform to Birstihs european specs or ASTM specs.
- Isolation joint
An isolation joint is used to lessen compressive stresses that develop at T- and unsymmetrical intersections,
ramps, bridges, building foundations, drainage inlets, manholes, and anywhere differential movement
between the pavement and a structure (or another existing pavement) may take place (ACPA, 2001). They
are typically filled with a joint filler material (such as filler board hydrocell) to prevent water and dirt
infiltration.

Table 13. Material Equivalence Factors relating C8/10 CBGM to other materials.

Note: that the thicknesses derived from the Design Charts need to be multiplied by the factors in this table
to obtain thicknesses for materials other than C8/10.
Note: that those materials in italic would not normally be specified as a pavement base but may be used
as part of the pavement foundation (see Foundation Design).

Notes: Concrete referred to as C16/20 means concrete with a 28 days characteristic compressive cube
strength of 20N/mm2. Where two numbers follow C, the first is characteristic compressive cylinder
strength and the second is characteristic compressive cube strength.

HDM = Heavy Duty Macadam.

DBM = Dense Bitumen Macadam.
HRA = Hot Rolled Asphalt.
SHW = UK Highways Agency ‘Specification for Highway Works’.
