M
r. Sheel Chandra was one of India’s most respected collector and curator of carpets and
textiles. Known worldwide for his passion and appreciation for rare carpets and textiles,
he was esteemed for his ability to create, maintain, and share his love and knowledge
of carpets. Mr. Chandra founded the Carpet Cellar in 1975 in New Delhi, India and had
acquired the finest rugs from Maharajas ,Estates, private collections and museums across the world.
Amongst other accolades, Mr. Chandra was known for having the one of the largest private collection of
Persian carpets in India.

ashan is a city in central Iran and is known
for extremely fine weaves mainly in floral
curvilinear designs.
Each carpet is named after the city, town or
village that it is made in. Each city or village has
a certain reputation for weaving carpets, some
are better than others.
Each weaving centre has its own designs,
colours, styles of knotting and look. Each city
uses different types of flowers that are possibly
indigenous to that region and one can hence

differentiate between the regions of origin. The
patterns can become larger or smaller over a
period of time depending on fashion and trends.
Dabeer was a very eminent master carpet weaver
who used to weave carpets for the Aristocracy and
the Shah of Iran. Dabeer Kashans generally have a
central medallion with four corners. However this
particular carpet is most unusual to have Garden
of Paradise design along with Tree of Life design
with lots of birds and animals with more than 35
colours.

The Center field is covered with meandering
roses, which are not crowded, creating a lovely
balance and a soothing beauty. The mastery and
craftsmanship is such that they appear to be like a
painting giving a three dimensional effect.
It is an extraordinary play of creating a fascinating
design between the positive and the negative
spaces creating harmony. The idea is to create a
real life illusion of bringing your gardens indoors.
These are very rare to come across and were
generally commissioned for the Shah of Iran that
were custom made for his palaces or some were
meant to be given by him as ‘gifts’ to visiting heads
of states and Aristocracy.
Rust is considered to be colour of Life and is
generally derived out of a creeper called madder.

Blue is made out of indigo.
Black is iron oxide.
Yellow is derived from flowers and sometimes
saffron.
Pink is derived most probably from the rose
madder plant. Madder is a creeper and they use
the flowers from it which gives a beautiful dusky
English rose colors.
Dabeer Kashans are fairly thin in texture, and are
highly prized by Persians and collectors to be one
of the best collector`s pieces in the World and are
normally founds in Museums
and are always appreciating in value and are
considered to be a great investment for the future
generations to come.

The town of Kerman is in Eastern Iran,
and has always been one the best
known carpet weaving centres. Kerman
carpets are highly prized because of
their floral decorative quality and vivid colors. They
are made of fine, lustrous wool, coloured soft red,
green, blue, yellow and ivory normally.
The village of ‘Ravar’ situated twenty-five miles
from Kerman is renowned for producing the most
beautiful floral carpets of high quality and design.
These carpets are known as "Kerman Ravar".

Laver Kerman carpets are mostly in floral designs.
Many have rich central medallions, the motifs
of which are also used in the borders and in the
corners. On some of the larger Kerman carpets
there are animal designs or repeating patterns,
the smaller ones are often decorated with vase
patterns or pictorial subjects.
The success of the Kerman carpets is mainly
due to the skill of the pattern designers, called
"ustad". The result is that while all Kerman
carpets have something in common, which

distinguishes them from those of other areas,
they are also made in a wide variety of designs.
Many of the finest rugs had elaborate all over or
panel designs and many were adaptations from
various shawl patterns.
In the Traditional Kermans, the foundation is
always cotton and it differs from other Persian
city rugs in that there are three wefts after each
row of knots, one of which is exceedingly thin.
The two tight wefts keep the warp separated
on 2 different levels, while the third weft helps
to stabilize the fabric. Alternate warps are thus

deeply depressed and the pile is particularly short
on finer Kermans.
The dyes are vegetable/natural dyed i.e they are
extracted out of plants ,rocks minerals and some
times even insects like laq and cochineal. These
are generally permanent and rarely fade.
Traditionally Kermans are found in deep maroons
and blues.
These carpets, generally made for export or
commissioned for the Shah`s, Maharaja`s and
aristocracy of Europe.

It has been inspired by architectural
greats like Tadao Ando, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd
Wright and Louis Kahn. The designs are cutting
edge ,emphasizing nothingness and empty space
to represent the beauty of simplicity.
We are creating these designs with a play of texture
in silk and wool whilst the silk shines and the wool
part has a matted feel creating a gorgeous texture.
Zen Collection:-The Zen collection is inspired from
the Mahayana Buddhism school that originated
during the Tang dynasty in China. This collection
emphasizes an ultra-modern simplistic design in
subtle, muted colors to create a harmony between

breath, mind, meditation and mindfulness. The idea
is to create a serene and calm interior.
We are creating these designs in a high and low
technique, with a play of texture, in silk and wool.
The silk shines and the wool part has a matted
feel creating a gorgeous texture in muted pastel

Erased Luxe Collection:- The Erased Luxe
collection is inspired by centuries old designs from
Egypt like Mamluks from the 16th century, the
Safavids from 16-17th century Persia and even
modern artists and painters.

want to let go off their heritage and roots.
