WORK-ENERGY-POWER

In a simple sentence the Power is: “how fast we do work”.

The mathematical expression for the power is:
𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘
𝑃=
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
Where the SI units are:
!
Power = W= !; One Watt = one Joule per second.
Work is = J; Joules.
Time = s; seconds.

There are several common units for Power, like:

Activity 1:
Directions:
1) Answer the practice exercises on page 156
2) Answer the formative assessment on page 157.

Activity 2:
Directions:
1) Hang one object from the spring scale.
2) Hold it steady and record the scale reading.
3) Answer: Is the spring exerting a force on the object? Is the spring doing work on
the book? Why or why not?
4) Now, slowly pull up the spring scale so the object lifts at a constant velocity.
5) Record the spring scale reading.
6) Answer: Is the spring exerting a force on the object? Is the spring doing work on
the book? Why or why not?
6) Calculate the amount or work.

Activity 3:
In 2015, Tudor Rus wrote an article entitled “2016 Mazda Miata is Very Similar
to the 2015 Porsche Boxster, According to this Infographic” this was a press
release published on ”autoevolution” website:
https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2016-mazda-miata-is-very-similar-to-the-
2015-porsche-boxster-according-to-this-infographic-98304.html

I. Read the article and then answer the following questions:
1) What is the weight ratio?
2) How is the weight ratio calculated?
3) What is the power of the car’s engine?
4) When he interviewed Frank Mitchell and he said: “but considering you can get
90-95% of the Boxter's performance”. What did he mean? Show the calculations to
demonstrate it.

Daniel Miessler, wrote an article entitled “The Relationship Between Horsepower,
Torque, and Acceleration” (updated on December 5th, 2018) to answer the
question: What matters more for acceleration—horsepower or torque?
https://danielmiessler.com/study/horsepower/

II. Read the article and then answer the following questions:
1) What is the torque?
2) How is the horsepower calculated for car engines?
3) After this reading: Did Frank Mitchell make a good comparison between the 2016
Mazda Miata and 2015 Porsche Boxster?

Team activity: (4 to 6 members):
Directions:
1. Each team member will climb a flight of stairs and the rest will record the
name of the student, Mass, Time and height information.
2. Calculate the power of each member and organize the information as shown
in the chart below:
