The DepEd Mission

DepEd Mandate
The Department of Education was established through the Education
Decree of 1863 as the Superior Commission of Primary Instruction under a
Chairman. The Education agency underwent many reorganization efforts
in the 20th century in order to better define its purpose vis a vis the chang-
ing administrations and charters. The present day Department of Educa-
tion was eventually mandated through Republic Act 9155, otherwise
known as the Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001 which establish-
es the mandate of this agency.

The Department of Education (DepEd) formulates, implements, and

coordinates policies, plans, programs and projects in the areas of formal
and non-formal basic education. IT supervises all elementary and second-
ary education institutions, including alternative learning systems, both pub-
lic and private; and provides for the establishment and maintenance of a
complete, adequate, and integrated system of basic education relevant
to the goals of national development.

Graduation Message
The greatest life’s challenge is life itself.
Many people have existed but they didn’t
know how to live.
Once more, the collaboration between
schools and their stakeholders has borne
good fruits. The DepEd is now reaping the first
gains of the K to 12 Basic Education Curricu-
lum, specifically the first graduates of Grade
12.
What does this year’s theme: ”Mag-aaral
ng K to 12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay”
imply to us? It describes to us the picture of
the graduate of basic education in this 21st
century. The image of the graduate is some-
one who is resilient to the reality of life – that
life is a call of service to others.
Our call to these communities where these
learners belong is to make their place a fertile
breeding ground for the citizens of tomorrow.
The readiness to serve is tempered by an envi-
ronment that is just and humane. Young lead-
ers look up to good role models. Beyond one’s
desire to accumulate material wealth should
be the yearning to “contribute meaningfully
to building the nation.” Congratulations to all
completers and graduates, as well as to their
families. May you always be a blessing to one
another.
