Q.1 Objective Type Questions - (All are compulsory) (Each of one mark) (15)
1. In ________________ process the observables take on a continuous set of values in a
well-defined manner.
2. Write the general energy balance equation.
3. What will be the criteria for the equilibrium between two phases?
4. Name the two professional simulation packages available.
5. What is kinematic similarity?
6. Define independent variables.
7. Identify the mode (Design/ Analysis) of figure shown below:

8. For the system without recycle, which kind of modular approach you will suggest?
9. Find the incidence matrix of set of following equations in functional form: f1(x1, x2) = 0,
f2(x4) = 0, f3(x3, x6) = 0, f4(x4, x5) = 0, f5(x1, x6) = 0, and f6(x2, x3, x5) = 0
10. Name the three use of mathematical models.
11. In order to obtain solution of mathematical model of any system degree of freedom
should be _______
12. Write overall reaction rate for the following equation:

13. Which law is used to find the activity coefficients of the non-ideal liquid?
14. Name the laws used for the transport of heat, mass and momentum at molecular level.
15. What is model?
Q.2 Answer the following questions. (Attempt any three) (15)
A) What are the various model formulation principles?
B) Describe the various stages in the development of a complete mathematical model for a
process using neat flow diagram.
C) Write a brief note on sequential modular approach.
D) Consider that the Benzoic Acid (BA) is continuously extracted from toluene using water
as the solvent. The two streams are fed into tank A (mixer) where they are stirred
vigorously and the mixture is then pumped into tank B (settler) where it is allowed to
settle into two layers (extract and raffinate). Model the system to find out what fraction
of BA has passed into the solvent phase.
Q.3 A) Model the ideal binary distillation system with suitable assumptions. Also check the (07)
mathematical consistency of the model.
B) A tank contains 20 m³ of water. A stream of brine containing 2 kg/m³ of salts is fed into (08)
the tank at a rate of 8.33 x 10-4 m³/s. Liquid flows from the tank at a rate of 5.56x10-4

m³/s. If the tank is well agitated, what is the concentration of salt in the tank when the tank
contains 30 m³ of brine?
OR
B) Model the multi component flash drum with suitable assumptions and check the (08)
mathematical consistency of the model.
Q.4 A) Discuss the M&H-1 algorithm with the help of flow chart. (07)
OR
A) Using SWS algorithm solve following set of equations: (07)
(a) x1x4+x62/x4-4=0
(b) x2x5-3x6=0
(c) x1/x2+ln(x3/x4)-2=0
(d) x33+2x32-2x3=0
(e) x2+x4-3=0
(f) x3(x3+x6)-7=0
B) Using K&S algorithm for the decomposition of MCN find out the streams that are to be (08)
treated for the diagraph of a process shown in figure below:
