REFLECTION

a. Why did you choose this unit topic?

Children generally know about animals and where they live, but they may not know
which continent they live in. Therefore, we chose this topic to tell the children continents by
using animals and a world map. Since they know most of the animals, our aim was to teach
children which continent they live in. We wanted to teach children continents so that they can
be familiar with continents, and this information might help them later in their life.
b. When you are planning your unit and lesson plans, which of the ASSURE steps do
you think you spend most of your time thinking about? Why?
The ABCD part was different to think about it, because in our other courses, we do
not write anything similar to this concept. However, by using the worksheet that was
uploaded to ODTÜClass, we were able to find out what we were curious about. Audience
step was easy to write, however, choosing how to write the right behaviour and condition
with the right words was a little challenge for us to overcome..
c. For each individual phases in the ASSURE model, please write your experiences and
rationales while designing your unit plan, lesson plan, and materials. Make sure your
reflection involves your answers to these questions:
-How did you determine the prerequisite skills or knowledge (if any) for your plan?
What is the rationale behind the time allocation?
Last semester, each of us had an experience different early childhood settings, and we
were able to identify each age group’s needs and prerequisite in skills and knowledge,
therefore we used our previous experience in the field for determining in our plan. For
instance, we want to give children the habitats of animals, they need to know animals firstly.
If they know the animals, they can understand easier where they live. Also, we did not give
them the continents directly, we made a plan for teaching. Showing the world map, and then
showing them continents so that they can learn progressively.
The time allocation depends on the children’s background in the school. We can learn
the lessons which we did before and we can understand what time they need in one subject.
Also, the content of the subject is important, too. If the subject is extensive, the time should
be more than others. In addition, the other lessons are continuing at the school. For this
reason, we cannot spend all our time on one subject. We should make a plan and then apply
the plan on it. We should disseminate the subject for a time, due to children can forget the
subject. As we learn from education lesson, people learn better by doing repeatedly.
Therefore, we repeated some of the information in our plans to make sure children learn
about the animals, continents and where they live.
-How did you determine and write your objectives?
We determined our objectives looking at the objectives and signs table that Ministry of
Education provided for early childhood education, considering our activity plans and what we
want children to achieve by doing those activities.
Also, when determining how to write the ABCD objectives, we got help from the document
uploaded on the ODTÜClass to make sure our objectives are understandable and right in
terms of content. Our Audience was determined when we wrote our activity plans, therefore,
we tried to find the correct Behaviour and Condition regarding our activity plans. Behaviour
was chosen in a way that reflects our activity plans’ content in a short way and Condition was
determined according to process and how we used the material tools to apply the activity in a
fun and meaningful way for children’s learning.
-How did you decide instructional methods, media and materials? Why did you choose
them?
Firstly, we came up with activity plan topics and worked on them to improve their depth and
to discuss about how can we apply those activity plans in real life. To do so, secondly, we
decided which instructional methods should we use by looking at the worksheet provided in
ODTÜClass. When we chose this topic, we had materials available for children to use that we
made in another course. Therefore, finally, we decided to use that material and appropriate
media according to our activity plans.
-What is the instructional theory on which your instructional activities are based? Or do
you use eclectic approach for them? Why?
We used eclectic approach in our activity plans in order children to learn more about the topic
we chose in a way that they can add up to their previous knowledge. For instance, in the first
activity plan, we wanted children to recall what they already know about continents and to
review their knowledge about them with a PowToon presentation and a matching treasure
hunt game, and the second activity plan, we wanted them to learn more about the animals so
that we can move to third and final activity in which they use their knowledge about animals,
continents and which animal lives in which continent. With this way, it would be easier for
children to recall what they already know and to add new knowledge.
-How did you plan to utilize these instructional methods, media and materials?
After planning the activities, we tried to find the appropriate media tools to enhance the
learning and the attractiveness of the activities. While doing so, at first we categorized our
activities as introduction, body and conclusion. That is, the first activity is like a warm-up
activity to the subject and in order to obtain attention to the subject, we used PowToon
animation which is fun and teaches/recalls the continents. As a second activity which is
related with a book called “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle, we thought that if we put the
pages of the book into the Prezi, it would be beneficial for several reasons. First, teacher’s
hands will be free to move and second, all children could see the pages easily. To continue,
we want to relate the animals of the book with the habitats. Therefore we used Easel.ly to
prepare an infographic about it. To finish the subject of “Habitats of Animals” we created a
concept map with using GoConqr to play and measure children’s understandings about the
subject. And after this activity, we thought that it would be advantageous if we send a
homework to homes which is made from Google Forms.
-How did you plan for learner participation?
We thought that if we plan fun and informative activities, we could get the attendance we
want. Therefore, 2 of our activities are child centered play activities and 1 of them includes
movement activity. With these activity plans, we think that learners will attend
enthusiastically.
-How did you plan for evaluation and revision? What is the rationale for choosing the
measurement and evaluation methods?
The activities that we planned includes different types of evaluations such as asking questions
about the activities or drawing pictures about what they have learned. Since our activities are
eclectic, children can go back to remember what they have done so far whenever they want.
In addition, one of our activities is a self-corrected one which children can see their mistakes
and fix these. Moreover, since the preschoolers cannot write or read, rather than the formal
measurement strategies, the teacher’s observations and notes would be more valuable to
comprehend the understanding of the children.
