A poor woodcutter accidentally dropped his axe into a lake while working. A fairy appeared and offered him a silver axe and then a gold axe to replace his wooden one, but he truthfully said they were not his. Pleased with his honesty, the fairy rewarded the woodcutter by also giving him the silver and gold axes. Later, a rich man tried to trick the fairy by claiming a silver axe was his after dropping a wooden one in the lake, but the fairy knew he was lying and left without giving him anything.

She asked. Holding up a silver axe. No. replied the woodcutter. Is this yours? The fairy asked holding up a gold axe. No. said the woodcutter. Is this yours? Asked the fairy. Holding up A wooden one. Yes! Yes! Cried the woodcutter.Happy to have his axe back. You told the truth; so take the gold and silver axes too. Said the fairy. A rich man who heard the story dropped a wooden axe into the same lake. Is this yours? Asked the fairy. Holding up a silver axe. Yes! Said the rich man. No it is not! And you know it! said the fairy. And went away into the deep water. The rich man learned that one must always tell the truth.
