Recycled Fashion

Waste is one of the most overlooked problems in many households everywhere. It is

created carelessly more than it is taken care of. However, not all trash is useless, some of them
can still be reused or recycled for other purposes. The purpose of this project is to create a new
piece of clothing from recycled materials. This will show that recycled materials can be beautiful
and useful, as well as an alternative to buying new clothing which can create unnecessary
waste. In addition, it is a way to create art and share the creativeness of the designer. We have
included Eastern and Western influences which are Thai myths and French-style gown, in a
work entitled Kinnaree à Paris.

Every artwork has its own inspirations. The inspirations that we have chosen comes
from a myth of Southeast Asian origin, particularly the Thai version of Kinnaree. Kinnaree or
Kinnaris are depicted as an upper half-female, a lower half-bird creature who is a symbol of
grace, beauty, and accomplishment. In this costume, the wings are made from access materials
from school projects. They are put higher than traditional depictions of Kinnaree to allow for
better visual. A pair of earpiece accessory is also worn as a part of the costume. The white
loincloth(or Congkraben) also comes from Thai culture. It is made from leftover painting fabric
from Sports Day. These are the part of the costume that represents Eastern culture through the
beliefs of Thai myths that are relatively well known throughout Southeastern Asia.

As for the Western influence of our outfit, the inspiration was taken from a French-style
multi-layered gown, which is made from newspaper and plastic from broken umbrellas. This is
to create the effect of the flowing tail of the bird part of the outfit. The corset and the open-
shoulder shirt are also another influence of Western culture. These parts are included to make
the costume more suitable for the modern style of clothing.

Recycled fashion has delivered two meaningful messages. First, it shows a way to
reduce waste by being creative and thoughtful about materials around us. It is a step forward to
a clean world and a step away from a wasteland. Second, it shows that Eastern and Western
culture can blend together despite the differences. It shows that our cultures even though
different can still be connected, which is also true for people with different cultures and beliefs.
