Students will develop an organization system that makes sense to them Materials: 1. “How Organized Am I?” survey 2. Pencil 3. Two Backpacks 4. Organizational tips handout Lesson Outline/Procedure: Include each of your learning activities 1. Review last week’s lesson on Goal setting 2. Hand out survey 3. Play game: Two volunteers will be asked to search through two separate backpacks to find a piece of paper with a large “X” written on it. First student to find the “X” paper wins (one backpack is organized, one is not). 4. Have a discussion with students about what it means to be organized and why it can be helpful in middle school. Ask questions such as: Þ How can we improve organizational skills? Þ What happens when students become disorganized? Þ How does being organized help students get better grades? 6. Give students handout with organizational tips 7. Have students clean out their backpacks Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected? Process Data: Take attendance and keep track of how long the lesson takes Perception Data: Students complete a survey at the end of the lesson listing 3 ways they can stay organized. Outcome Data: Teacher feedback on level of improvement for student organization Plan for Next Lesson/ Follow Up: Challenge students to see if they can keep their backpacks clean/stay organized until the following week. Review organization tips and techniques at the beginning of next lesson

Tips for Staying Organized
1. Use your planner!
Keep track of homework and assignments in your planner
2. Use a separate notebook, folder, or binder for each subject
Use dividers to separate subjects within your binder
3. Always have a place to put your papers
Never leave lose paper in your backpack
4. Clean out your binders and your backpack periodically
Remove papers you no longer need
5. Put headings on your papers
Remember to put your name, the date, and page numbers on your assignments
