The role of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage in Scotland

Technical lecture
06 June 2019 18:00 - 20:30
Status: Limited Spaces

Description

The Committee on Climate Change has recently recommended a new emissions target for Scotland of achieving net-zero
carbon emissions by 2045, five years ahead of the target set for the UK. The report goes on to state that delivery of these
targets will require a combination of technologies and actions including Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS).
So will it be fourth time lucky for CCUS in Scotland? This talk will look at the role that CCUS can play in carbon
management in Scotland – from a description of the technologies and infrastructure that will be required to deliver CCUS to
a discussion of the just transition that CCUS can provide to a low carbon future.

Dr Julia Race is a reader in Pipeline and Subsea Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. She obtained her BEng in
metallurgy from Sheffield University and her PhD in weld modelling from Cambridge University. Her research interests in
Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) include pipeline and marine transport of carbon dioxide for carbon capture
and storage, particularly relating to the materials of transportation, the impact of impurities on the transportation of CO2
and risk assessment for onshore pipelines.

However, more recently Dr Race has been working with the Centre for Energy Policy at Strathclyde researching the
broader whole economy aspects of CCUS. Dr Race is a member of the Directorate of SCCS (Scottish Carbon Capture and
Storage) and on the research group of the UK CCS Research Centre. She has worked on the FEED studies for two major
CCS projects with National Grid Carbon.

Prior to moving to the university, Dr Race worked in the pipeline industry for 7 years as an integrity consultant for GE Oil
and Gas. In this role, she was responsible for providing fitness-for-purpose, remaining life and corrosion assessments for
onshore and offshore pipelines. Dr Race has also worked as a materials engineer in the petrochemical and power
generation industries involved with the operation, maintenance and design of chemical and power plant.
