GRADE 7 SCIENCE
CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding of the different modes of heat transfer.
LEARNING COMPETENCY
The learner infers the condition necessary for heat transfer to occur.
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
a. describe how heat transfer by convection occur;
b. perform an activity about heat transfer by convection; and,
c. cite the importance of heat transfer by convection.
II. Subject Matter
a. Topic: Heat
Subtopic: Heat Transfer by Convection
b. References: Learner’s Module Grade 7 Science (pg. 243-261)

c. Materials: food colour, 6 glasses, soft drink bottles, 25 centavo coins, warm water, cold water,
old CD/DVD
d. Skills: Critical Thinking, Analyzing
e. Values Integration: Cooperation
f. Methodology: 7E’s (Elicit, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaboration, Evaluation, Extend)
g. Concept: Heat transfer by convection is the actual movement of heated mass of liquid or gas. It
occurs when warmer areas of liquid or gas rise to cooler area in the liquid or gas.
Evaluation:
TRUE or FALSE
Write CONVECTION if the statement is true and write HEAT if the statement is false.
1. Heat transfer by convection occurs in solid only.
2. Heat transfer by convection occurs when warmer areas of gas or liquid going to cooler
areas.
3. Convection is the form of heat transfer which deals the movement of thermal energy of
liquid or gas from one place to another.
4. Heat transfer by convection occurs in liquid and gas.
5. Hot water or hot air is less dense than cooler water or cooler air.
Extend:
1. Write an essay of what you learned about the topic for today (heat transfer by convection).
2. How does heat transfer by radiation occur?
3. Study all about heat transfer by radiation.

Activity 1
Objectives:
In this activity, you should be able to observe and describe convection of heat through gas or
air.
Materials:
25 centavo coin
Tray of cold water
Soft drink bottle
• You can see the tray of cold water with the inverted soft drink bottle and a 25 centavo coin.
Procedure:
1. Set up the bottle and pick out the 25 centavo coin in the tray of cold water.
4. After your hands feels warm grip it hard the outside of the cold bottle and observe what
happen to the 25 centavo coin.
Questions:
1. What happen to the 25 centavo coin after you grip the cold bottle with your warm hands?
2. What if you grip the cold bottle without rubbing your hands does the 25 centavo coin can
move?
Activity 2
”MOVE ME UP!”
Objectives:
In this activity, you should be able to observe and describe convection of heat through the
liquid.
Materials:
2 glasses
Food color
Old DVD/CD
Warm water
Cold water
Be careful not to bump or shake the glass at any time during the experiment.
Procedure:
3. Stir well.
6. Cover the hole of CD with your fingers, gently invert it and place it on the top of the glass of
warm water.
Questions:
1. Does the food color stay at the bottom of glass or does it mix with the liquid above it?
2. What happens to the food color after placing the glass of cold water above the glass of warm
water?
3. How heat transfer taking place in the setup? Where is heat coming from and where is it
going?
