CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

Background of the Study:

In this generation, there are different inventions that people has done. One of

this, are the batteries. Batteries comes from many shapes and sizes, from large, bulky,

and heavy batteries to miniature cells used to power hearing aids and wristwatches to

small, thin cells used in smartphones. Battery life is a measure of battery performance

and longevity, which can be quantified in several ways: as run time on a full charge, as

estimated by a manufacturer in milliampere hours, or as the number of charge cycles

until the end of useful life. Build factors that affect battery life include the type, the

number and the quality of cells used. Generally, battery health and longevity decline

further into a battery’s life and as a function of the number of charges cycles it has gone

through. And there are a number of things a user can do to extend battery life.

We all know that batteries are part of our everyday life. Our day would not last

without using our hand phones. We use a remote control to switch channel while

watching television. We unintentionally bump with batteries in everyday events. We also

know that battery life does not usually last long because of frequent usage of devices

that require them. But in this study, among the selected battery brands, we want to

know which one of them has a long-lasting power. The necessity of the study is to

ensure that the consumers of batteries will know what brand will be efficient and last

longer. Therefore, we will be going to examine the different brands of batteries, so that

we are guide on what batteries we are going to use. The purpose of this study is to

notify the readers about the brand of the batteries that will last long.Since the invention

of the battery, manufacturers have been battling it out to prove whose battery has the

largest capacity and the longest lifespan. Since they have been putting so much money

in advertising to attract more people, they have saying bold statements and are

bragging so people don't know what brand to pick anymore.

Conceptual framework:

Statement of the problem:

This study aims to determine the lifespan of certain batteries to know what is the

best choice when buying brand new batteries. These are sought to answer the following

questions.

• Which of the battery brands has the longest lifespan?

• Will be there be significantly large gaps between the batteries’ lives?

• Does the weight of the battery have any relationship on its lifespan?

Hypothesis of the study:

1. Null: There is no significant difference with the longevity between the battery

brands.

1. Alternative: There is significant difference between the longevity of the

different batteries from different brands.

2. Null: There are no significantly large gaps between the batteries’ lives.

2. Alternative: There are significantly large gaps between the batteries’ lives.

3. Null: There is no relationship on the weight of the batteries with their lifespan.

3. Alternative: There is a relationship on the weight of the batteries with their

lifespan.

Assumption of the study:

This study is conducted based on the following assumptions:

1.) Batteries are free from factory defects.

2.) The same brands of batteries used in the study are of the same

quality.

3.) The weight of the batteries are within the range of 13 grams to 33

grams

Scope and Delimitations:

Long-lasting battery is not quite invented yet. But there are batteries that last for

more than one day after using it without stopping. In general, the focus of this study is

directed towards the batteries that we are using everyday. The importance of this study

is for us to know the average capacity of the selected battery brands and how long will it

last. We used the following battery brands: The Eveready:Super Heavy Duty, Maxday,

Eveready:General Purpose, Energizer and Leida. The study was conducted on March

2-17, 2019 at 1020 Ipil-Ipil St. Brgy. Libertad, Surallah, South Cotabato.

We have chosen these conditions so we have the most accurate data obtained

as possible and also, we gave the work of doing the experiment to the person that we

trusted and is having the patience to wait for long periods of time, so that’s why we

conducted the experiment in a very long-time window of 16 days.

Significance of the study:

Knowing the longevity of the battery brands can help us. Significant results of this

study could be beneficial and helpful to the readers, for they will know what battery

brand to choose.

As researchers of this study, the results will be of great significant in the readers.

The battery capacity represents the maximum amount of energy that can be extracted

from the battery under certain specified conditions which referring to the battery that has

a greater power. The most powerful and long-lasting battery can help us to improve our

knowledge about choosing the exact brand of the battery to use in our daily lives.

Definition of terms:

 Capacity: The capacity of a battery or cell is defined as the amount of

energy that it can deliver in a single discharge. Battery capacity is

normally specified in amp-hours (or milli-amp-hours) or as watt-hours.

 Battery: A battery is the generic name for a unit that creates electrical

energy from stored chemical energy. Strictly it consists of two or more

cells connected in an appropriate series / parallel arrangement to provide

the required operating voltage and capacity to meet its operating

requirements. The term battery is also frequently used to refer to a unit

consisting of a single cell, especially when it contains battery management

circuitry.

 Cell: The definition of the cell is the basic electrochemical unit that is used

to create electrical energy from stored chemical energy or to store

electrical energy in the form of chemical energy. A basic cell consists of

two electrodes with an electrolyte between them.

 AA (battery size): AA batteries are typically dry cells, which are made

with an electrolyte that is inside a paste. An electrolyte is a solution that

conducts electricity. When under a load, a thin rod inside of the battery

reacts with the paste to produce a voltage.

Our experimental results revealed that, the lifespan of the alkaline battery

increased by intermittent operation by 28% compared with continuous operation. The

lifespan of the rechargeable batteries (Nickel-Cadmium, Nickel-Metal Hydride and

Lithium Ion) however, either were not affected or were reduced by intermittent

Batteries have become essential travel companions. They help us call a friend,

assist in computing a transaction and support critical missions when lives are in danger.

What are the most common batteries in use today, and how do they compare in terms

of run-time, cost, longevity, reliability and maintenance requirements? Are there

methods to restore batteries that appear "dead"? In this article we explore the

advantages and limitations of today's most popular battery systems. We examine the

batteries not only in terms of energy density but address service life, load

characteristics, maintenance requirements, self-discharge and operational costs. Since

the nickel cadmium remains a standard against which other batteries are compared, we

evaluate alternative chemistries against this classic battery type. The alternative

chemistries are: Ni-MH, sealed Pb-acid, Li-ion, Li-polymer, and reusable alkaline

batteries. Battery maintenance and battery analyzers are discussed.

A gel form negative electrode of an alkaline battery is produced without mercury

and enables uniform dispersion of zinc or zinc alloy powder and an effective metal

which can be one or more of an oxide or hydroxide of indium, lead, gallium, bismuth.

The zinc or zinc alloy powder and the effective metal are drymixed in advance of mixing

with a gel form alkaline electrolyte. In order to obtain satisfactorily high vibration

strength and impact resistance, fiber material can be added to the gel form negative

electrode. The fiber material may be selected among rayon, vinylon, acryl, vinyon,

polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene, mercerized pulp, linter pulp.

Research Design

This study is a descriptive analysis wherein

We performed this experiment in one of our research mate’s household. The

research will take place once we finished recording the time the batteries run out of

power. We used different battery brands.

Data gathering method:

We used quantitative method since we are trying to find out which of the batteries

we chose to be experimented on has the longest life.

Research Instrument:

A plastic platform, 12v motors and wires

Research Procedure:

We prepared our equipments to perform our research experiment. We put two

12-volt motors, attached wires to them then put both of the motors on top of the small

plastic platform. We used both motors with one battery per motor at the same time for

increased efficiency and better comparison than using only one motor per battery at a

time. To record how much time each battery lasted we used a wristwatch. We timed

thebatteries once their respective electric motors stop rotating since that is the sign that

they; the batteries are out of energy and are already drained.

Statistical Test Used:

The researchers used mean percentage to determine the lifespan of each

batteries. A Persons relationship is used to determine the relationship between the

weight of the battery from its life span.
