This procedure is to be used to launch and retrieve the work boat on either side of the barge
using any crane. No personnel are to be on board the workboat during the crane operation to
and from the boat cradle to the water line.

1. Remove the boat lashings and clear away from boat
2. Disconnect and clear the charging socket.
3. Secure painter to the boat at the designated location on the bow. This painter is also
used as a tag line during lifting and for positioning the boat near the gangway
4. Check fuel tank topped up
5. Check steering
6. Check boat lights and search light working
7. Check boat plug in place and in satisfactory working condition
8. Check boat equipment in place
9. Test and confirm manual bilge pump working satisfactorily
10. Connect the lifting sling to the crane hook and lift the boat out of its cradle. Once
boat is clear of the cradle and confirmed all in order, lift the boat clear and towards
the designated gangway for personnel embarkation.
11. Designated gangway to be rigged and ready for use.
Note : Gangway is not to be lowered to the water line until the boat is in position.
Adjust the gangway bottom platform as the embarkation for the boat will be very low
in the water.
12. Lower the boat to just above the waterline so as to position the boat hook in line with
gangway bottom platform, adjust the painter or crane as required.
Note : Take care to allow enough space for the gangway between the work boat and
the Crane Vessel.
13. Once the position of the boat has been adjusted lower the boat to the water line.
Note : Do not take all the weight of the boat hook or the crane block will become an
injury hazard to the personnel in or boarding the boat
14. Lower the gangway while monitoring the boat movements.
15. Boat personnel wearing appropriate PPE to board the boat
16. Start boat engine, confirm that the gangway, gangway safety net is not fouled with
the boat handrails etc
17. Release boat hook and painter, steer work boat clear of the Crane Vessel.

RELEASE MECHANISM OPERATION STEPS

CAUTIONARY NOTE : PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE OPERATION OF THE ON -


LOAD HOOK RELEASE SYSTEM. INCORRECT OPERATION CAN LEAD TO A SERIOUS
ACCIDENT INCLUDING FATALITY.

HOOK RELEASE

1. Pull out the red safety pin (A)


2. Pull the release handle (B) downwards until the
hook is released.

WARNING : while the boat is being moved By the


crane the release handle (b) must be kept locked.
The accidental operation of this handle will result in
the opening of the boat hook and could result in a
serious accident.
The release handle should be operated when the
boat is water borne

HOOK SECURING

1. Place the hook in its original position making


surethat the green arrow heads are aligned.
2. Pull up on the release handle (B) until the hook
is locked.
3. Insert the red safety pin.

PROCEDURE TO RETRIEVE WORK BOAT


1. Manoeuvre the work boat alongside the Crane Vessel pick up and secure the
forward painter.
2. Allow the work boat to fall back on the painter until the boat hook is in a position in
line with the gangway embarkation platform.
3. Position the crane hook over the work boat and secure the boat lifting sling to the
crane. Due caution taken so that the crane hook and lifting sling is not slack
4. Once workboat is in the required position lower the gangway to disembark all
personnel.
5. Once all personnel have been safely disembarked heave the gangway clear.
Note : Prior heaving check to confirm that the gangway & its rigging safety net etc is
clear of the boat.
6. Lift the boat out of the water and place back in the cradle.
7. Secure boat and prepare for its next use.
