7th Sunday Of Easter; Lord’s Supper - by Intinction
The world lost an incredible voice when author Rachel Held Evans died unexpectedly at the
age of 37 this past May. Although she was not a pastor herself, Held Evans was a Church
leader and had the platform to truly change hearts and lives.
Born into a Fundamentalist Christian family, Held Evans went through a transformation in her
own faith life which she chronicled in her books. Never afraid to stand up for what she
believed in, Rachel went toe-to-toe with some of Evangelical Christianity’s loudest voices,
showing great courage, but also exhibiting extraordinary grace.
Inclusion was a major part of her faith, and Held Evans devoted her life to making sure Jesus
was accessible to all, and that all were welcome into faith communities.
Sacramental theology became important to her as part of this transformation, and Rachel felt
particularly passionate about the Lord’s Supper. In her book, Searching for Sunday, she
writes:
I don’t know exactly how Jesus is present in the bread and wine, but I believe Jesus is
present, so it seems counterintuitive to tell people they have to wait and meet him
someplace else before they meet him at the table. If people are hungry, let the come and
eat. If they are thirsty, let them come and drink. It’s not my table anyways. It’s not my
denomination’s table or my church’s table. It’s Christ’s table. Christ sends out the
invitations, and if he has to run through the streets gathering up the riffraff and fill up his
house, then that’s exactly what he’ll do. Who am I to try and block the door? (148-9)
In the PC(USA) Book of Order, (part 2 of our denomination’s constitution), it states: “The
opportunity to eat and drink with Christ is not a right bestowed upon the worthy, but a
privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. All who come to
the table are offered the bread and cup, regardless of their age or understanding” (W-3.0409).
I am proud to serve a church and a denomination where we live into what Rachel Held Evans
fought so hard for. There are tables where we are not welcome; there are churches that choose
to exclude us from the Lord’s Supper. But that is not the case at Hill. At the table, as well as
everywhere else in our community, all are welcome, and all are loved.
May you, in the days and weeks ahead, feel God’s loving presence with you, and truly believe
that you are God’s beloved creation.
Peace-
Rev. Leigh

TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY participants are planning a couple of field trips this summer. They
hope to visit the Kelso Bible Museum at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and take the 500 Years of
Church History walking tour of Ford City. Naturally, lunch will be included!
A giant thank you to all who helped Wednesdays on the Hill make a huge impact on the students’ lives.
On the final evening, each family who attended our pizza party and performance expressed such
appreciation for all the WOTH staff accomplishes each week. Whether you work on Registration, the
Kitchen Crew, Music, Craft, Drama or Game specialties, or in a classroom, you are all so amazing!
Thanks also to those who supported the Mother’s Day Candy fundraiser for the summer youth trip. A
special thanks to the students who made the candy and to Louise Evans and Barb Graham for their
awesome leadership.
The National Youth Triennium is coming up quickly! From July 16 to 20, hundreds and hundreds of
youth will gather at Purdue University to explore the theme “Here’s My Heart” through discussions,
worship, recreation and more. Because of your amazing generosity, we are able to offer registration and
transportation free to our students and adult sponsors. Our travelers will only have to finance meals on
the way out and back and personal spending. (Like souvenirs!) Attending this year are Barb Graham and
Steve Arn as our adult sponsors and students Bethany Sowa, Lydia Reeger, Emily Rogers, Grace Seybert,
Sam Heist, Declan Graham and Laura Homa. Laura attends the East Butler Church, one of the BAP
congregations, and will be travelling with our delegation. Welcome Laura! Amazingly, the delegation
from Hill outnumbers the rest of the Presbytery put together! Five other Beaver-Butler students and an
adult leader will be travelling with the Erie Presbytery delegation. Trading pins is an important tradition
at Triennium and we received a donation of 250 pins from the Jeep Festival organizers. Thank you! And
thanks to Nancy Daugherty for arranging it.
During the 1990s, and even after Kathleen left the Hill staff in 2001 and Pastor Clark assumed the
leadership of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study for Women, Evelyn McDevitt was a faithful member of that
group. She also served as the chief kitchen coordinator for the Wednesday Youth Club in those years
until her good friend, Mary Bishop, took over. She was a long-time member of Presbyterian Women in
our presbytery and served on the coordinating team with Bea Welch and the late Anna Kidd. She would
have been deeply moved to know so many of you did her the honor of coming to the viewing and/or
funeral after her passing on April 13. Kathleen and Mark were touched and comforted by your
expressions of concern and the many beautiful and thoughtful cards they received. Thank you.
