Name: Jose Gomez Block: 1 Date: 11/29/16 Team: Problem

Directions:
I. Begin your first draft of your witness testimony by filling in the blanks below (you are ALWAYS welcome to use
your own language to sound more professional and capture the essence of your character for the highest score). Your
testimony should include biographical information and explain how the Industrial Revolution influenced or changed
your life. Your testimony is essential to the trial: use this opportunity to persuade the jury that the Industrial
Revolution is problem or progress.
II. Your testimony must include:
A. an introduction
B. ONE well-written body paragraphs (M.E.A.L. Plan) that includes contextual detail with your evidence
C. a short conclusion
D. TWO questions you’d like your lawyer to ask you that introduce something special that you have not yet
already mentioned (along with your prepared responses, of course). It should take about three minutes to
read your testimony out loud to the jury (you should be ad-libbing (speaking from heart) or have it rehearsed;
do NOT read directly off of notecards).
E. A Google slide(s) with images that you’d like us to show WHILE you are on the stand

III. Once you have finished filling in your first draft, slide(s) and 2 questions, submit them on ECHO (to Witness
Testimony) & SHARE IT so your lawyers and teachers can help you edit your testimony as you go. Do the following
to edit this document:
❏ Click on File < Make a Copy to make a copy of this document
❏ Rename the File “Block #_Your full name_Character’s name_TEAM PROBLEM / PROGRESS”
❏ Make sure to change settings on Google doc so ANYONE WITH THE LINK CAN EDIT
❏ Attach to the activity entitled Witness Testimony in Echo.
❏ Share with your team’s lawyers & teacher

IV. Testimonies should be rewritten multiple times and practiced!

V. Witnesses should also incorporate props, visual aids, and costumes into testimonies.

Witness Name: Al Gore

A. Introduction ¶: See if you can capture the sound of your character’s voice, dialect, and vernacular (Look at closely at some
of the quotes from your book to see how your character speaks. For example, do they speak in a working-class way or a
highly-educated way?)
Good Morning ladies and gentlemen of the jury and honorable judges. My name is Al Gore and for those who do not know me I am
a former vice president of the united states and now I am an environmentalist . You may also know me from the book “An
inconvenient truth”. I was born on march 31st 1948 in washington D.C. I grew up in Washington D.C and in tennessee where I
would spend my summer in. I work as an environmentalist so my job is to make efforts to save the environment. My goal is to
conserve the environment from global warming.

B. Body Paragraph: Describe (using specific EVIDENCE) how the Industrial Revolution affected or influenced
your life. Describe how the Industrial Revolution brought progress (improvements to life) or problems (hardships and
difficulties) to your life . Use the MEAL Plan model to structure your body paragraphs, but please enhance by
explaining CONTEXT of your life to the audience, who may not have read your book or even know who you are.
You may use the sentence-starters for an average grade. However, if you’d like to challenge yourself for a higher score,
you may modify them, or create your own.

M: The Industrial Revolution was a problem because all those factories that would produce the products released
Greenhouse Gases. Fossil fuels are the real culprit in this global warming situation. People burn fossil fuels almost every
Day when they drive cars, burn wood, cut wood (like trees). When you cut a tree it releases Carbon dioxide trees breathe
In carbon dioxide which is a Greenhouse gas.

E: (Tell us of evidence/ event from the story/ history that happened to you that shaped your life for the better/worse). This
will take numerous sentences, because you must explain the background of your story. The jury/ judges DID NOT READ your
book, so explain enough for them to understand without telling the entire story back to them.

(explain context/ background as you continue)

Just some background knowledge, Greenhouse gases are harmful gases that get released into the air. For example,
Carbon dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide. And fossil fuels are natural fuels that are made from the organisms
the past such as Coal, or gas. Before the IR the sun would warm up a specific
Amount and the greenhouse gases would soak it up and that was how the earth would warm up. Keep in mind that it was
Only a little bit of the greenhouse gases so that was fine, it would not affect us. If we didn’t have those greenhouse gases
Then there would be no way for anything to warm us up so we would have cold weathers. But now that we have
An industrialized world meaning we had factories to produce products faster it all changed. See, the factories in the IR
And present day don’t run by themselves. They have to have an energy source and the energy source that was used in the
IR for their factories was coal. And like I said in the beginning of this paragraph coal is a greenhouse gas. So think of all
the factories that ran on coal and how much greenhouse gases they emit from the coal. So with all the greenhouse
gases
that they emitted from the coal that hurt the atmosphere and it still is today due to the factories. So today all those
Greenhouse Gases soak up the warmth that the sun produces and that means that it gets hotter especially during
the Summer. Another incident that is happening right now is in dakota. What is happening in dakota is that they are going
To build a pipeline under a river so they can get oil and get oil across 4 states . But the thing is that the pipeline might
Cause an oil spill in the river. Also since it is oil it can cause Greenhouse gas emissions.

(give reasons for your opinions)

Clearly, this is problem because all the greenhouse gases cause a massive weather change meaning hotter weather and etc.

A: (Share at least two comments concerning how you feel about what happened to you)
This made me feel really scared to live in this planet because who knows how our climate is going to be by 2050 if
We keep this up.

This also made me think, How will we stop this if everyone is money hungry so they put our planet in risk by
Making factories while they Are making money ??

L: (What have you learned? Why is the Industrial Revolution problem or progress?)
So as you can see the industrial revolution was a problem because it caused air pollution and putting our planet to risk
Because some people don’t believe in global warming and they think that it is just a myth. For example Donald Trump, Trump

2
believes
That global warming is a myth. So now that he is the new president of the united states, Who knows what he will do. I am
Volunteering to work with Mr.Trump on climate change but I think my chances with getting to work with him are pretty low.
Like I said, he doesn’t believe that global warming is real. And it’s not only him, some people don’t believe in global warming either
They believe that rising temperatures yearly occurs naturally.

C. Conclusion Paragraph
In hindsight / To conclude, my (life story/ invention/ discovery) shows the Industrial Revolution was
To conclude the IR was a Problem because we learned the effects of global warming and what it will do if we keep
doing the things we are Doing right now. No one will make a change until this problem gets worse. Pretty much
people are digging a hole for themselves by not trying to make a change. And it will get to a point where the earth is
in a critical state and they
Will try getting themselves out of the hole that they digged.

D. TWO Lawyer Questions Work with your lawyers and write two questions your lawyer should ask your character during the
trial that will help further prove your team’s argument (that the Industrial Revolution was problem or progress). Do not repeat information
from your testimony; instead bring new information to the courtroom, such as the COUNTERARGUMENT.

Question 1:
What is an Ice core ?

Your Response to Question 1:

An Ice core is a process which scientist do to see the layers that a glacier has. Glacial ice has
Layers . Each year the glaciers get a new layer (kind of like the rings on a tree) the way they check how many
layers it Has is by pulling out a long cylinder of glacial ice this is called the Ice core. But with global warming,
scientist can’t check the layers from the ice cores because the layers melt.

Question 2:
Who are the people that get impacted the most because of the consequences of global warming ?

Your Response to Question 2:

Well, People in the pacific would be flooded due to Greenland’s ice dome melting because of global warming. Other places that
would be flooded would be the Miami, Florida, and the Netherlands. See, A third of the Netherlands in below sea level.

F. Preparing your witness for Trial Day!

1. What will you wear the day of the trial? You need to dress appropriately. Remember you are taking-on the identity of your
character. Search Google images of your character/Industrial Revolution clothing. Check out Photographer Lewis Hine’s
photographs of child laborers during the Industrial Revolution: http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/childlabor/

Describe costume:
Dress professionally.

2. Do you have any props for the trial that will help you portray the character? Does your character have any items that they are
connected with? For example, Lyddie might carry a copy of the book Oliver Twist. ...

Describe Props:

A copy of the book “An inconvenient truth”
