“SYMMETRIC FOLDING PATTERNS FOR FURNITURE DESIGNS.”
Adviser: LAWRENCE A. ECLARIN

This study primarily aimed to develop symmetric folding patterns for furniture

designs. Specifically, it aimed to create designs and models of furniture using rigid and

modular origami; and determine symmetries and the associated symmetry group of

generated origami patterns used in the rigid folds and modular folds.

The results of the study illustrated the use of mathematical concepts as applied to

designing objects using symmetries. An algorithm in designing and generating symmetric

folding furniture was formulated that served as a step-by-step guide in coming up with a

final product. The final designs and models created can be made into foldable tables,

chairs, beds and cabinets. One furniture design was created for each of the 17 plane

symmetry groups. Three-dimensional drawings of the final output, the folding and the

folded images were presented. The pattern for each design and their corresponding

symmetry elements were also shown.
