Keyboard Shortcuts - Custom Path

The vast majority of productivity apps offer keyboard shortcuts for often-
performed activities. But when there is a need for one that isn’t available,
sometimes Keyboard shortcuts can be custom created.

Keyboard shortcuts exist to save time pressing a combination of keys to

command a small function instead of navigating through an application's
menus. Developers usually build common shortcuts in their apps, but not
usually for rarely-accessed features.

Important notes
• It’s recommended to first thoroughly check both the app and Apple's pre-
defined shortcuts list, just in case there is a better way to perform the task. Some apps may provide an option to set keyboard
shortcuts within the app, but this is rare.
• Shortcuts can also only be used to perform actions within an app,
• A shortcut cannot be set up a general task that already has an assigned shortcut.
• Assigning a shortcut combination that is already in use will conflict or not work at all.
• A shortcut cannot be created to open specific apps using this method. Though with the use of Automator, apps can then be
launched using a keyboard shortcut.

Create a Shortcut
1. From menubar, go to: the Apple logo > System Preferences > Keyboard (icon) > Shortcuts tab.

On the shortcuts window,

• The left panel, lists the menu path for the applied functions
• The right column lists the actual keyboard shortcuts.

2. At the bottom of the left side panel, select App Shortcuts to display in the
right panel, a list of any app-specific keyboard shortcuts already set up. (It
commonly includes the "Show Help Menu" shortcut as an example).
3. Click the plus button below the shortcut list.

4. In the pop-up window that appears, next to the Application: field, click the
menu dropdown arrows to display a list of applications.

5. From the list, select the application for which the shortcut will apply.

Note; In the extremely unusual situation when it

is possible for the same function to be
performed in multiple apps with matching paths
to the menu, then All Applications can be
selected to prevent limiting it to just one app.

6. In the Menu Title: field, enter the name of your desired menu command as
it will appear in the menu, followed by the order of menu options that must be
clicked to get to the function. Note that each option item to be listed in the
menu must be separated by "->" in the definition.

Example: To sort the list of RSS feeds in Vienna by whether a post was
unread or read, the Menu title, would be: View->Sort By->Read.
7. For the Keyboard Shortcut:
• Click inside the text entry box.
• Press and the combination of keys to assign to the shortcut. (It’s OK to
try multiple combinations to determine which works best for you.
• Then click Add.

* Should a chosen key combination conflicts with another app, then

macOS will signal the error with a yellow warning triangle next to the
relevant shortcut listing.

The shortcut will be added to two locations:

• System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > right panel • In the Finder Menu, according to the specified path.

8. Now test the shortcut while the application is active on screen to make sure it works. If everything is fine, close the Keyboard
window.

Edit or Delete Keyboard Shortcuts

1. Return to: the Apple logo > System Preferences > Keyboard (icon) >
Shortcuts tab
2. Click App Shortcuts and locate the desired shortcut.

EDIT a Shortcut:
• Click the file path or key combination.
• Enter the changes.
• When done, click within the shortcut panel, but outside of the shortcut
• Then test to ensure it works before closing the window.

REMOVE a Shortcut from the Shortcut list:

• Select the shortcut, then click the minus button below the shortcut list.
